Sad news that Cal Baptist is dropping their program, but they do have a freshman 285 who was a Fargo Champ and Wisconsin state champ. Full sized HWT. AWA kid. Maybe the Mirisola’s could reach out and get their former teammate to come to Happy Valley and add some depth at 285. Kid is on a redshirt year, so he is a year behind Cole. Perhaps with Olympic cycle and Olympic redshits available he might get two years in the line up (it seems Cole would qualify) at the very least add depth. Very high on all the Askren kids.

Kinney tells me his offer is for wrestling and football. He’s a three time PA state champ at heavyweight who had a fantastic career at Nazareth before choosing to go the football route at Lafayette.

Not sure how he did playing football at Lafayette, but it is a huge step up to play at PSU.

I agree. Plus, football shape and wrestling shape is far, far different. It would not be easy to do both.

Maybe it could go like it did for the guy from the Reading area about ten years ago… Jan ____…

… filled in for a season or two on each team… usually not both back to back seasons.

Jayden James is registered at 168 for the Doc Buchanan tournament scheduled for Jan. 9-10. The next lowest weight is 160. It will be interesting to see how much James grows in the next year or two, especially considering he won't be 17 until next month.
I am almost positive James is currently 17 and will turn 18 towards the end of June. Still very young for his senior year.

James was born 6/20/2008. He's 17.

It depends on where you get your info. AI search says he was born Feb 2009, which would make him 16. But here's his Team USA bio:

My mistake. I didn't confirm my search results, which is bad form on my part : ) It is interesting that AI made the mistake of using the DOB of the wrestler listed just in front of James on the USA Wrestling Team Bios page, which El_Jefe properly points out. AI was fooled by the Google search result listed below. Stupid AI! (and foolish me :()

AI's answer: Jayden James, the U17 World Champion wrestler and Penn State commit, was around 16 years old when he won his world title in mid-2025, with his birthdate being February 19, 2009, making him a young, rising high school senior at the time, currently around 17 years old as of early 2026, continuing his dominant run in age-group wrestling.

Here is the search result for the Google search of Jayden's age:

Oh I know the frustration. It's a wonderful tool that's still in its infancy. Over time it will become pretty darn accurate and useful. It is scary, however, to imagine a world where people lose their ability to independently research things because they rely on A.I.....Most interesting to me about his birthday is how young he is in comparison to the other elite recruits. His ceiling is insanely high. He's being ranked against men who are 19 while he's still 17.

His win against Miller really shows how good he is. I didn't foresee anyone in HS giving Miller a tough match, much less beating him. Jayden also seems to be a quick learner. Miller took him down earlier in the match with a beautiful ankle pick. In SV Jayden anticipated Miller's ankle pick attempt and countered beautifully for the TD. Jayden also has great proprioception, which leads to him winning most scrambles. I am really looking forward to watching his career unfold.

Below is a great example of Jayden's scrambling ability from his U17 gold medal match against Iran. He looked dead to rights, but not only didn't give up any points, but got a step out in the process.

Since there's no PSU recruiting news on the horizon ...

Elijah Brown won Chambersburg Trojan Wars during Christmas Break. In the semis he won a wild match over Decker Bechtold, 17-13. Bechtold last year was S6 at 189 as a FR. (Bechtold's 2 older brothers are the defending 285 state champ and the #10 197 for Bucknell.)

In the finals, Brown pinned MD state champ Evan Gavin in 45 sec.

He's now 11-1 on the year. Hoare and Bechtold are the only opponents to last 1:30.

Mods @Tom McAndrew @GregPickel - can you please clean this thread up and move the last 40 or so posts from this thread to an Off Topic or other more relevant thread for those discussions to continue elsewhere since they have nothing to do with PSU Recruiting? If you'd like any assistance, I'd be happy to oblige. TIA.

I've been contemplating doing that for some time, and your post pushed me to take the action.

It's great to have the additional voices on the board, since the merger. But I frequently am wondering why folks can't stay on topic in threads that are dedicated to a specific topic. I try to be accommodating of different styles, techniques, etc., and want folks to post, so while I'm often tempted to cull a thread, I keep hoping that the OT component will die out/others will stop responding to the OT posts.

Just a reminder to everyone: please try to stay on topic is threads that are dedicated to a specific topic.

Agreed, especially the recruiting thread. You see a bunch of updates on this thread and keep hoping it’s good news only to see a bunch of posts that have nothing to do with the topic.
