In a tournament, sometimes, it has to do with an honest evaluation of where you are in comparison to your opponent. I will use Trent Hidlay as an example. Trent Hidlay wrestled defensively and on the edge of the mat against exactly one opponent. That opponent was Aaron Brooks, who he lost to in 4 National Tournaments, twice in the finals. I may not like it, and it's not fun to watch, but, he obviously felt that his best chance at a victory was to try to keep the match as close as possible and give him an opportunity to win it in the end. Again, I might not like it, but, I completely understand why a wrestler/coach would use this strategy in a situation where they feel they are out-matched.
