Probably no to both. Mesenbrink said he will wrestle 157-165 depending on what the coaches need. He’s entered at 74kg (162.8 lbs) for the US Open.
If he can reasonably hold 157 this year, then next year is the right year to shirt him.

I’m curious why anybody thinks that he’s going to take a red shirt at some point? based on what logic seems to me over the last decade the history has been you either redshirt coming out of high school as a true freshman or you don’t redshirt outside of injury. Or of course Olympic redshirt. Especially in this day and age of NIL I think it’s less incentive to redshirt if you don’t do out of the shoot. Just curious if this is guessing or some sound logic I’m missing.
Because a few PSU guys have done it in the past. Nico and Zain are the two I can think of and it paid off for them.
Facundo need’s another season at 165. Needs to get stronger.
Perfect lineup we “ALL” want. Break records and get the #1 class for 2025 again $$$$$$
IMO his biggest issues are neutral offense. Good athlete. Good length. Good defense. Has trouble scoring against most guys that are solid defensively.

I think Starocci is rehabbing from a knee injury he incurred/aggravated in his bout with Dieringer. Any news on how he’s doing? Will Carter be ready for the season?
Most of us are aware of the Olympic redshirt possibility for those in PSU's lineup. The below Flo article addresses that, as well as competing at Bill Farrell and Senior Nationals. It seems we may be wondering about/speculating about/discussing the lineup even after the start of the season.

This team has a great shot to break the scoring record at Nationals this season. Better get your tickets now. It’s going to be insane. Can’t wait. Could have 6 or so National Champions and the rest AA.
Penn State wrestling: Projecting the 2023-2024 lineup with Carter Starocci back
Penn State three-time NCAA champ Carter Starocci announced this week that he will compete one final time for the Lions this winter.
With the season ramping up, went through YouTube, watched a few NCAA wrestling vids. More and more the projection is Haines going to 165.
FWIW the season roster isn't even out yet. Guess that'll just come out the day of the Journeymen Classic, at this rate. There will be no traditional media day this year. The first media session will be one day early next week. So, we'll get some answers soon.
no insider info on my part at all, just a few different talking heads stating Levi had difficulty staying at 157 last season, and he has grown and it could be more problematic this season.
There was definitely some talk of this earlier in the offseason but I think we're beyond that point for this year.
