Let me play doctor on the internet for a minute. Sellers looks to me to have PTSD and who can blame him! The guy got sacked or had to run for his life on just about every play last year. I think Seller's problems are between his ears and not anything to do with talent or skill. He has missed some wide open receivers that he hit easily his first year. I think he is watching rushing lineman way more than looking for open receivers. Just a thought.

Defenses have adjusted. Sellers has not.
Eh, somewhat. I think the OP is referring, though, to times when Sellers has a chance to make a play but he doesn't. He had a run against MSU on Saturday where he could have easily cut inside for long gain, if not a TD, but instead he ran it to the sideline after picking up the first down (at least he did that). In 2024, he just seemed to have a natural killer instinct. He doesn't have that anymore. He is playing more tentative.

Off the top of my head, the last time he had a Sellers-type play was his TD run on the first drive against VaTech last year.

I don't how much of it is coaching and how much is just him, but I think he's the kind of QB who NEEDS to run and get hit to be effective. He seemed to feed off that.

Eh, he was only pressured 12 percent of the time on his dropbacks against MSU (got that stat from Shurburtt). The oline did its job. So he's having PTSD on nonexistent pressure? Then we need a new qb to play. Don't have enough time to fix mental issues. You either have it or you dont. Next man up.

I find it funny when people complain of his lack of vision locating open receivers. Remember those glasses he wore during his first season as starter?

I'm not talking about him responding to pressure. Just the difference in how he attacks as a runner. In '24 he had a killer instinct. He's tentative now.

Could it be b/c he was one of the most sacked QBs in college football last year? Maybe.

I already suggested in another thread it may be time to give Cutter a shot if Sellers can't work out the mental issues.

I hear you but the staff better figure out quick who can run this offense. The games aren't getting any easier. I don't think we can afford to get into a hole again where the offense disappears for a quarter and turns over the ball.

I think in 2024 he was still playing like he did in HS, where he could outrun and overpower pretty much every player on the opposing defense. I also think he took opponents by surprise with his running ability, they were focusing on taking away his receivers and that left him alone to tuck the ball and run. Illinois studied the tape before the bowl, put a spy on him and shut down his running.

Once he couldn't get the big yards with his legs, his kryptonite was exposed, passing the ball. DCs learned that if you take away the open run lanes and force him to be a passer, he will struggle.

I think he looks tentative because he is uncomfortable as a pocket passer QB. The opposing D doesn't really have to sack him, they only have to make him a little uncomfortable.

Defenses are part of it, but he has changed his QB style too. (or it has been changed for him)

If Loggains had been here for the bowl game we would have beaten Illinois. He was in Sellers ear and they had a good relationship.

It is obvious he isn't great at reading defenses. He also isn't great at going through progressions. If his primary and secondary receivers aren't there, he gets happy feet and starts running around. When he does that, the spy or LBs go after him now because they know his instinct is "run".

I think the defensive changes have forced him to change his style and he isn't comfortable with what he has had to change to. He is a great athlete, not a great QB. He thinks like a RB who can throw the ball, not like a QB who can run.

You sorta made my point. That is what PTSD is all about. Seeing things in your head that aren't really there. Your mind is a powerful thing, and I think it is holding him back from being the QB of 2 years ago.

Maybe we watched different games, but in that Illinois game, he could have run for 200 yards; that was Shula's first game, and it was very evident that Shula was trying to make him a passer instead of a runner. Had zero to do with Illinois and everything to do with Mike Shula.

could it possibly be that Sellers just isn't as good as many of you think he is, he showed some athletic plays in 2024, but Conner Shaw he is not.

I wonder why he isn't good at going through progressions.....he hasn't had time before this year to look at a primary, never mind anybody else!

I agree with you, that was my take watching the game at the time. I repeatedly saw his instincts start to kick in and immediately stop like he was remembering what Shula must of told him. He probably had dealt with defensive spies since the LSU game.

He’s being coached to either get down or run out of bounds because they have zero confidence in what’s behind him. Hence the two timeouts when he lost his helmet and had to come out of the game. Someone on this staff believes they can’t even run one play without Sellers, which is a slap in the face to the backup qb.

That was extremely poor. I had been a Beamer supporter; no more. Not good leadership.

If I’m Woods, I’m gone.
That was a big moment for me as well. Woods should be ready to go in at any moment and run a 3rd and short play. Wasting a timeout there looked like "We can't possibly convert this 3rd down without Sellers on the field" to me.

Yup- Big concern is Duckworth bailing too. Although O Line is better than last year. Not going to say excellent but better. Sellers doesn't have the leadership EQ nor is he a football strategist. He is a beast, no doubt. They helmet off-play over, play was something to behold. He and Harbour are one in the same. Harbour doesn't get that if he were to drill a DB on a block every now and then he could possibly create a little space on routes he runs.

I believe that was a 3rd down situation though which makes it make a little more sense as to why they called the timeout. I didn't look at it like a slam on the backup QB.
