Didn't see anywhere in that article where we've offered. It did mention, however, that we might offer by Friday.

He's got good size, good enough speed to run the option like we do, and it seems like he can make every throw. Any guy that holds every passing record in the state of Georgia is definitely worth going after. I don't want to be the one that says it, but I wonder if maybe there are some legit concerns about Tyler Russell. It's always good to sign a QB every year, but with the possibility of getting Cam Newton, it seems kinda odd to go after another QB.

My thoughts as well.

That gives us 2 scholarship QB's on campus, unless you're counting Relf.

You comfy with that?

I know Rosebowl has said on more than one occasion that the staff wants to sign a high school QB in this class.

UCantStop15, Tebows are all over the place. I say we just sign a couple of Tim Tebows and go from there.

When he has Percy Harvin, he's superhuman. When he doesn't, he's just another good player.

I don't think signing a JUCO guy who will be gone in 2 years should affect our recruitment of HS QBs. Unlike Croom, Mullen needs to sign a HS QB every single year. This year, we are also forced to sign a JUCO guy because Croom left the program absolutely barren of upperclassmen QBs.

...I've decided UCantStop15 is the moron who sits behind me and loudly proclaims that every play we run that doesn't go for at least 10 yards is the dumbest thing we could have done.

Wasn't aware of that. That helps. Rethinking it - it would be stupid not to recruit a HS QB pretty hard - especially in the event that Newton does not commit. Not bringing in any serviceable QBs in a recruiting class would be very Croomesque.

Mullen has always said he intended to sign two QBs this year, and at least one of them would be a HS kid.

I wouldn't try to read too much into it, but I know everyone is eager to read into everything.

I also wouldn't read too much into this, but Rosebowl said last night TR is "a better passer than Newton" and that he "has it on good authority that TR is all we hoped for and more". like i said, take it FWIW. The truth is probably somewhere between Rosebowl's rosy outlook and the sh*tty reports we've heard from C34 and others who have never seen him play.

And that leads to the next point, which is how solid does Mullen think Newton is in coming to State? Mullen isn't dumb, so I'm sure he knows about some of the rumors going around about Newton talking to some other schools. Before the Newton talk, we were really heavily recruiting guys like Nash Nance, Barry Brunetti, Terrance Broadway, and Devin Burns. Once the Newton talk heated up and we seemed pretty comfortable in the fact he was coming here, talk about high school QB's stopped. Now that there is talk about Newton looking around, it seems like the concern is back that we might need to go get a high school QB. I wonder if Mullen is just covering all his bases and wants to have a backup plan, or if there is legit concern from Mullen that Newton won't come here.

Assuming we do sign both we'd have:

Newton - JR
Relf - doesn't matter because he'll be moved
Russell/Stegall - RS FR
HS QB - to redshirt in 2010

That's not exactly overloaded at the QB position.

...and should be a shootout. Colquitt County (south Georgia) is coached by Rush Propst. Yep, the ex Hoover coach. Lassiter is coached by Propst's offensive coodinator from the Hoover glory days (Chip Lindsey) so it should be a good game. One of the "knocks" on Mason is his arm strength or lack thereof. The game is scheduled to be shown on Georgia Public TV website.

but I went to one of the high schools that Rush Propst got to own every year. My high school was decent a couple of years while I was there, but Hoover was absolutely no joke back then. We didnt lose by less than 21 points in any of the 4 years I was in high school. Those Hoover teams put some people in plenty of Div 1 schools. Rush Propst is one hell of a coach. Even with his whole affair deal, I'm surprised that a school like USA or some other school in the state of Alabama didn't pick him up as an assistant. That game should be one hell of a football game to watch. Really want to see how Mason does against a guy that can coach as well as Propst can.

without signing a QB...Relf is switching positions this Spring...and we will have 4 QB's- Newton, Stegall, Russell, HS signee...

That would make us like a normal school then to have 4 scholarship QB's...Crooms has fried everybody's brain it seems by saying we have to remain committed to one player...it's a competition like it is for every position...let them battle their *** off to be Newton's back-up

for Croom's lack of QB recruiting going back 3 and 4 years ago. It doesn't mean we shouldn't try to add one good HS QB every year.
