I don't really pay attention to recruiting or anything like that. I was wondering some peoples "expert" opinion. With Relf having one more year its obvious (I would think) who will be our starter next year. Where does this put Russell in the grand scheme of things? He has a great arm, once his decision making develops at this level, but his running skills (or lack thereof) seems to be the question. Is he a player who might transfer because he does not necessarily fit the mold of the Mullen offense?<div>
</div><div>I forget what game it was, but when Russell was in there were time on that zone read that he kept it and had some really good runs, can he turn into a passing/running threat or is he as one dimensional as Relf is in terms of skill set?</div>

are NOT mobility. They are his accuracy and a tendency to throw interceptions. He's certainly not Relf but he has shown he can move around and run when needed.

It's more the little things that he needs to work on. The biggest thing I see is that he stares down WR's and he will sometimes force a ball. If he can learn to use his eyes to move the defense, I think that will help with the INT's. His accuracy was pretty good for a RS freshman- 58%, and is actually better than Relf for the year. I'd like to see our QB's- all of them- get to 65% ideally and at least 60% for the year.

The most encouraging things that I have seen from him are his ability to make some tough throws and make plays. As he matures, I could see him being able to make some throws downfield for us fairly consistently.

One more thing on Favre: He's a cocky son of a gun, and he doesn't hide it. He might be only 5-foot-11, but he acts like he's 6-6.

"They've been wanting to hit Dylan for a while, so I'm surprised they didn't get more of a piece of him," Mullen said of the defenders. "I'm sure now we've got to listen to him talk and all that stuff."

do it again here, but I was told that Manny had really good things to say about Favre to some of the cigar boys. Said he is good at ad-libbing. If he needs to throw it sidearm to get it around a DE, he can do it. I was a little surprised myself, but we keep hearing these kinds of things about him.

what he said when he called Mullen during his sr. year in high school afterTyson Leegot stuffed on the goal against LSU don't you?

"Coach, I would have scored on that play".

Small or not, that is the attitude you have to have in your QB.

and we wont know more until after Spring Practice...with Prescott coming on board for the Spring, it will be quite a competition for the back-up QB position. Should Russell lose some ground in that battle and slide back, I could see him transferring. But hopefully he wont. He is not a very good runner, despite what some try to say. And when I say this, I'm comparing him to your average Spread Option QB, not to Ryan Mallet. Russell is not a statue, but saying he is "serviceable" is stretching it a little.

Prescott is interesting because he is our 1st true dual-threat QB. He has thrown for around 55 TD's the last 2 years in HS and rushed for 1,500 yards. Him getting an extra Spring practice is tremendous. He will be a factor now in 2012 for the starting position.

Farvuh? He is the wildcard. He's too short, too small, but he just makes plays. Who knows what we will get out of him. If he really does have that "it" factor- he will always be in the mix.

One thing is fo sho- if they all stay, we will be in better shape at QB in 2012 than at probably any other time in my 40 years of watching us.

10 or 15 lbs of muscle and good QB coaching can make a hell of a difference to a kid who has "it". If he does in fact have "it".

I am super excited that we actually are having a competition for that position.....for so many years we have had nobody that stepped up and played QB even half way decent. Now we have 3 guys that possibly could play at most schools (including Favre) and bringing in a guy in Prescott that has the tools to be better than any of them (and he's coming in Jan.)

I dont see this as a problem at all, but as possible the most obvious sign of progress that we have seen yet. No doubt that somebody is gonna get left out, but that is a risk I am willing to take to have a good QB year in and year out. It is gonna be really interesting to see how it all plays out, but if Relf makes the same strides again this coming off season that he made the past one....he might just be a "really good" quarterback before he leaves.

I've heard a lot of people close to the program describe him as a Todd Reesing. He might be a 'pro-style' QB, but he can roll out of the pocket, and he's almost identical in size to Reesing.

2008/2009 offensive line with a 5'11'' QB, fail. Favre with this year's offensive line and hopefully next year's will be pretty good, not saying he'll be any better than 3rd on the depth chart though.

that our worst completion percentage in practice is something like 6 for 9. I remember times when we were barely at 50% in freaking scrimmages.

And I think Dan will continue to bring in good QB prospects, so when Relf does leave, we will have Tyler, Dylan, Dak, and ___.

defense making some nice throws against two top defenses. The TD pass to Bumphis in Tuscaloosa was an NFL throw. I am the minority who is beat down with the 5'9 quarterback with heart. Give me 6'5 with a good arm. Russell is still the only qb to beat Panola in 7 years and he did running a spread. He is not Tebow, but he also wont be a negative with his running. The kid can throw as good as anyone in the conference.

But that's cause our D was FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!!2!!!!1!1!!

/sheepmode off

Prescott will be here for spring practice, but I don't think he will participate. He had an injury (MCL/PCL maybe) causing him not to be able to play basketball this winter/spring, which was a deciding factor in him being an early enrollee. Now he may be ready physically to play this fall, but for now, spring practice will be a purely mental exercise for Prescott. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

at MSU....if he is...we are in trouble. If that situation happens and he proves me wrong, then I'll be happy. Prove me wrong.

He didnt run the Spread-Option vs USP- there is a huge difference between it and the Spread

He cannot throw as well as anyone in the conference. He stares WR's down- He threw one TD in SEC play vs what- 5 picks?

He is young and should get better- but he cannot throw the ball as well as Newton, Mallet, Masoli, Hartline, McElroy, Lee, Georgia's QB, Garcia...and in our offense at State- running is a requirement- and that puts him at a disadvantage...I wont be surprised at all if Prescott takes the job by 2012- he already has him beat running the ball...and as we know- if the passing is close- Mullen will play the better running QB

but you can mark it down. I don't mean mop up duty or Favre starting because everyone else is injured. I don't think he will beat out the other guys on the roster in the next 4 years...if he does we will be in trouble. If he becomes our all time greatest QB...that's fine with me...prove me wrong.

A high school football player that has not graduated high school, not signed with any college team, and not practiced one play on a practice squad as a college football player "already has him [Russell] beat running the ball?"

just curious. Coach34's observation in this thread that we will be in the best shape at qb in 40 or more years is spot on and brings a WOW outta me.

continue to recruit better QBs than Dylan Favre. That's what I think. Next year Relf, Russell, Prescott, Favre....in that order. Yes, Favre's size is an issue.

hitting a key fourth and 13 conversion. He hits Bumphis on a great touchdown pass. Next series the reciever falls down causing an interception and Coach34 immediatley makes a snotty post about Russell's interceptions.
And I didnt say he ran the spread option, I said he ran the spread.....coach

I realize that size is an issue but what about the ability to run the offense and make plays?

Offense won yesterday 6-5 and Favre ran for 3 and threw 2. Not sure who scored the other one. So according to production, you think he might have an edge on Russell?</p>

and before you throw out the ONE exception of that group (Murray), know that that guy is very mature for his age. Tyler Russell still has baby fat on him. He's got the physical skills, he just needs to get the intangibles to play college ball.

we actually have 3 QBs that I wouldn't mind seeing take the field for the 1st game of the 2012 season, and the luxury of not having to throw them out there before they're ready.

Proof that favre is not very good because of his height or are you basing that on henig and lee??? Also it baffles me at how everyone on this board thought that 5'11" masoli was good enough for ole miss to possibly win an extra 3 games but 5'10" favre is not even good enough to be considered. All of this is with him not even having a chance to prove himself yet. He is lightening it up in practice but he continues to be negated because of his size. Who gives a **** if he is short, he may be a badass short 17er. You also say we are in trouble if he is our starter??? How is this so in order for him to be our starter he has to be the best Qb on our team. we have russell and dak coming in and everyone loves to praise russel but he is not ready and may never be. Whoopty 17in doo he beat south panola. If he don't start showing everyone in the world who is throwing to he won't last long.

Garcia and Newton aren't seniors...and clyde is the idiot that said Russell could throw as well as anybody in the SEC. Thats just not even close to being true.

excepton of Mallet. Mcelroy, Garcia, Newton, Masoli, Brantley all 4 years in to their career and yes I think Tyler has a good of arm as any of them.

I can't count how many times he under threw the WRs or just floated a ball up there. His arm is not close to any of those guys right now. I hope he improves with both his passing and running. Right now unless he improves a lot he will not start for us.
