Qualifications for becoming a full time Bulldog Fan?

I attended MSU back in '68, involved in a serious car accident the summer after, so had to transfer to USM, as my hometown was nearby and was under treatment from H'burg MD's, so with a little bit of a Bulldog tie , I'm about ready to give my season tickets away, drop my Eagle Club membership and try to qualify as a Dawg. I really get a kick out of this board, so I'm going to ask the question and can't wait to get unloaded on with your answers. Can I qualify as a Bulldog fan? I still have my original cowbell and it's a good'un too.

...actually, I'm second generation because my dad got a Masters and Specialists degree from MSU-Meridian Branch a few years before I got my Bachelors here. I say "welcome". To become a Bulldog fan is quite easy- just sell you USM tickets, buy Bulldog gear, and climb on. <div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div><div>
</div><div>For you bulldog purists, I don't want to hear it. As a Division 1 Mississippi school, we need all the fans we can get. This is how national powers are built- sidewalk alumni who love our school and are willing to support it. </div>

My first impulse is to say no. If you quit USM, they will only have 9 fans, but 10 is such a nice round number.

No matter the sport, here's how to be a MSU fan.

In the offseason, you let your anticipation build. Players you may remember from last season are going to be at least 25% better due to experience and off-season training. Any player who had a breakout year last year is going is going to be All-American this year. The team is easily going to win 70% of their games and make the post season. With a few breaks, the team could make some noise for a SEC West title. And if the team peaks towards the end of the schedule, the season could really be special like the '96 Final Four run or a trip to Atlanta for the SEC title game.

At this point, you are wishing you bought more season tickets. You begin looking at the away game schedule to ponder some road trips after the season starts.

The season starts. We totally crush some scrub on opening day. All that anticipation starts to feel real.

But next up in the early season comes the first challenge. In football, we'll play an Auburn in week 2. In basketball or baseball, we'll play another scrub who gives us more fits than anybody expected. Whatever the case, the Dogs suffer a heartbreaking loss. This is a real punch in the gut. The next 2 days, you don't want to think about sports. But as the week goes on, you realize the season is young and the team will bounce back.

The season goes on. The dogs win some. They lose some too, usually against SEC juggernauts. MSU beats weak SEC teams and has a winning record heading towards the late season schedule. To this point your expectations are more realistic. How realistic?

Wait, there are a few games left. If the Dogs can come together and raise their game at just the right time, we can upset somebody then pull a win here or there and salvage something.

But then...the upset doesn't happen. We were close though. Damn officials.

Hey, I hear that guy who plays (insert position) for our (insert the sport that comes next in the calendar after the current season is over) has been tearing it up in practice. Start pumping yourself up for the next sport.

Attend or watch on TV the last game or two. Enjoy a consolation win, and a bowl game or an early exit from some tournament. The season was ok. We looked good at times and next year's team will be at least 25% better.

Anyway, I can't wait for (insert next sport) season to start.

That is a PERFECT way to describe the life of a State fan. Eternally optimistic, crushed hopes, back to optimism, then resignation to the fact that this season could have been worse. Quickly move to next sport with high expectations.

...you can fight at a game, cuss at a game, taunt players & opposing fans at a game, get drunk off your *** at a game, & act like a ridiculous moron at a game.

But since the invention of the Internet, all of the aforementioned are minor misdemeanors compared to the class A felony of booing.

thing that you must do is sacrifice for the betterment of the school and University. If you aren't willing to sacrifice the time and money to attend a majority of the home games and give to the bulldog club I personally won't consider you a "true fan". Fans that live over 6 hours away I give a pass.

Why not? You've attended the school.

Hell ask Bama and ole miss
Pay your bulldog club fees(donation) and you're in

I'm a 1st generation state alum/fan. Grew up a Bama fan, went to school at state met my wife at state, who also cheered at state, and grew up a bama fan too. Ironic
We pull for Bama some... But our life and $$ goes to state.
Welcome aboard.

Actually, my son in law is a State grad, season ticket holder, Bulldog Club member. My daughter is a USM grad but supports him fully, except when USM plays State. They are expecting their first child, boy, and she's been very fair in her college purchases, 1/2 SM, 1/2 MSU. I'm really surprised at the reception I've received. I came on this board a couple of years ago a few days before yall played Auburn, and I guess when many of you saw the word Eagle, all hell broke loose. Yall cussed me, **** on me, kicked me, etc and I could see how much fun you guys have on this board. Thanks guys, I don't really have my original cow bell, I've given it to my soon to be grandson, but if I can make a game, I'm sure he'll let me borrow it. It's truly a classic. When I showed it to my son in law the first time, his response was something like "Holy ****". It's such a bad *** bell that you could wipe out half of the Ole Miss student section in a short time. Thanks guys, good luck this year.

1. Welcome back to the Bulldog Nation.

2. Don't believe half of the things you read on here when the howler monkeys are throwing feces around the cage.

They're acceptable at home games now, but there's always the possibility of losing it or getting it confiscated for using it at the wrong time. Mine from 1965 stays in a glass doored bookcase, like a museum piece. And for heaven's sake, don't take it to an "away" game, especially Tuscaloosa. Just buy a new one to celebrate your rebirth as a Bulldog.

Never totally left. After graduating from SM a long time ago, I was around for those classic Dawg/Eagle games, and I'll have to admit that I did pull for SM, but have always followed the Dawgs and pulled for them, and will continue

I have my trophy cowbell signed by Jackie, Rockey, Joe Lee Dunn, Sylvester and other coaches. It never leaves the house. Except for autograph opportunities.

The cowbell I take to games is one I've had for over 45 years, when I was a student, but it's very generic, and I don't mind losing it.
It's a "calf bell," small, loud, and suitably annoying.

RCD

Edited to add: Bubba, I am from Collins, and a JCJC grad. If I hadn't gone to MSU, I would probably have gone to Mississippi Southern, since Hattiesburg's just down the road, and I grew up going to their games. Many of my Collins HS classmates went to Southern. I worked on their campus the summer before I went back to MSU for grad school. My momma was an MSC grad. I don't hate on them.

Concerning my old cow bell, one of your home games last yr. a reporter from TV station from, I think Columbus, was walking throught a tailgaiting area interviewing fans about cow bells, came across my son in law and actually featured it on their news report that night. If the clapper ever came loose while ringing it at a game, whoever is sitting below, better watch out. It would hurt you. Once again, good luck this yr. Probably can't make one of your games this yr as my new grandson is scheduled to show up in Oct., so it'll be the next season until my son in law and daughter will want to bring him up for a game, I'm sure. Thanks for letting me come on here and chat, yall are alot of fun.
