From a PR perspective, why is #HAILSTATE better than @HAILSTATE, or are they pretty much the same? Yes, I'm a Twitterdumbass.</p>

#hailstate is what everyone uses when they post about state for the most part. So everyone that's a state fan uses it to show their support.

Whereas the former would just be one, single account.

If you sign up for twitter, your username is @woofmanjack. So if I want to talk to you, I'd type "Hey @woofmanjack, our endzones are freakin' awesome #hailstate". Everyone who followed me could see the tweet, but you'd get a little notification that I tweeted at you.

The "#hailstate" is called a hastag. You can click on any hashtag in the tweet and it will take you to another screen in which is shows every tweet with "#hailstate" in it.

So essentially, the @ is used in front of a user name and the # is used as a hastag. Hope that helps.

So it's not an effort to get followers, but an effort to get all MSU fans to use the same hashtag making it easier to follow MSU tweets. Got it.

it will bring up all the tweets in the world that have that hashtag or if you see the hashtag, you click on it and will do the same. It is not a page to post on or an account. Its something you add to a tweet that makes it sortable.

The best use of this I've seen is Rod Walker with the C-L who had everyone that tweeted a high school score add #clhsfb to it. That way, I could just search for that hash tag and pull up everyone who tweeted scores.

we have needed this identity for so long. We can't use msu and mstateathletics is to long msstate doesn't associate to the athletics page
most national writers will use #missst or #mississippistate

the athletic dept may have just written it on the endzone for the egg bowl
but hopefully the national media will get behind the slight request and the fans also and now when you tweet about MSU you can tag it with #hailstate

I expect #hailstate to trend (trend - when something enters the top ? things talked about the twitter.com page with so it is trending) which will bring even more light to the 'event', people do check to see what is trending ...i don't know if they will on a saturday night or not, but i would expect the basic meaning behind this huge step is to "say if you are tweeting about MSU use #hailstate" which is the identity we need.

being the first only helps ...it is not like nascar it is marketing your brand ...i look at it as mlb putting the advertisement to the right of the catcher on the stadium

Twitter tracks which hashtags are being tweeted about the most on any given day. Anyone with a Twitter account in the world can/will see this. If #hailstate is trending you are exposing your brand to millions and millions of new people...a new audience if you will.

I wish State would bring in a temporary cell tower because we need everyone in the stadium with a twitter account tweeting about the endzone...with a pic would be even better.
