Question about Jacob Hyde

I was reading Justin's piece on the scholarship players listed by graduating class and didn't see Jacob Hyde's name. Is he still on the team? Or, did he lose his scholarship?

He was in Stoops first class. He RS'ed his first year so he is a junior this fall.

He's not the greatest talent but he bleeds blue.

By all accounts a great guy and teammate and strong as heck, but just does not have great technique, speed, etc. to really be a factor at this level of college football. I really liked him at FB at certain times and hope they use him some this season when needed.

I would venture to say he will get more than a handful of snaps, Elam can't play every down, even if he is in considerably better shape than in the past two years. He is also considerably quicker than Elam, though not nearly the space eater that Elam is. I think Jacob could see considerable playing time, especially with the loss of Meant for this season.

Neither Elam nor Hyde play Meant's position so their participation percentage is a moot point.

Whether it be DT or NT, those guys had better be interchangeable as thin as we are at that spot. In a 4-3 set a DT is a DT he just has a different gap assignment than the NT in a 3-4, depending on the strong side of the offensive set.

We don't run a 4-3, our base is a 3-4. Our DE and DT are somewhat interchangeable but our NT's like Elam, Hyde and Pringle are zero tech guys. While we do use 4 down linemen in our nickel sets, we might have one NT in that personnel package but certainly not two.

At DT and DE we have
Middleton
Dubose
Taylor
Miggins
Bell
Ke Daniel
Looney
Carter
and also Cross

We're young and lack experience but it's just a bit too early to push the panic button.

The reason I asked the question is I am trying to figure out how large our 2017 class can be. I know Kentucky's staff has it figured out, but wonder why this is premium information.

The NCAA says your roster can have no more than 85 on scholarship. With Walker's scholarship, or any walk-on scholarship for that matter, things become confusing. That 85 number is based on a January 1st roster as far as I understand things. It is pretty much common knowledge that UK's 2017 class would be around 18 which means we can take around 6 more. I know timing is everything when you are at or close to the 85 limit.

By my count, we currently have 82 on scholarship with 8 graduating this year which will put us at 74. With 12 commitments for 2017, we will be at 86. If Baumer, Butler and Jirsh are not on scholarship, then we are down to 83, leaving 2 spots open! One of those will be held open until the very last minute (Wills).

I know my analysis is most likely wrong, but I'm not smart enough to figure out why my reasoning is wrong. Ignorance, not intelligence is the problem. I would love for someone to educate me.

We have 9 Seniors on scholarship and 80 total kids on scholarship which included Meant and Montgomery, neither of which may be on the team next year. I believe your January deadline is incorrect. I believe the deadline is the beginning of school.

You may not be counting Will Tom Collins as one of your Seniors on scholarship. Also, while it's not likely to happen under Stoops, it's perfectly legal to not to continue a former walkon on scholarship in future years.

'17 will be a small class, probably no more than 17-18 if that many, for the reasons RV2 stated above. Back to a full class in '18.

Stoops said 16 at his Rotary club speech.

Thanks, RV.

I'm not sure I understand the process any better. Transparency would be a good thing, but I guess coaches want to play their cards close to the vest.

I wasn't sure about Collins so I didn't include him in my count.

They do announce when a kid leaves or a walk on gets a schollie. You just have to keep up with it as they don't ever put out a team list of any kind. It's not that difficult to keep up with it if you follow who we sign, who reports and who leaves.
