i remember he was the #1 dual threat qb coming out of high school, and i think i remember him playing as a true freshman....he was recruited to replace sleepy, right?....didn't watson brown leave after his freshman season?, and thus jackie switched from the option to more of a traditional i formation/ pro offense?

i've often thought we went from being on the leading edge of the spread offense in college to the trailing edge when we lost watson brown - think how many sleepy robinson's we could have had over the last 20 years - instead we've tried to run offenses that need a pro style quarterback - which we can't recruit to

I think the "we can't recruit a pro-style QB" thing is a myth. Jackie and Croom were horrible at developing QB's. If Delaware can get Joe Flacco, and Miami-Ohio can get Ben Rothlisberger (sp?), then yes, we can get a pro-style QB to play at MSU.

That said, the spread had been around for years. I remember Houston ran it with John Jenkins when they had Andre Ware and David Klingler and people like that. And I'm sure that people ran it even before that.

Plus, with Mullen, I don't think that we are on the trailing edge. This is probably the height of the offense. Typical MSU would be to run the spread 20 years from now when it has gone out of style.

agree mullen is not trailing edge - point is we should have been running dual threat qb offense all this time - ironic that we get a pro-style qb the moment we get a scheme that does not have to have one

The first team I ever saw go with 5 wides was MSU when Watson was OC and Sleepy was QB. Steve Spurrier didn't start that **** with Florida until after we kicked their *** with it in 1992.

He was a Perriloux-type situation. Great talent, but couldn't stay out of trouble. Seems I remember he either brandished a pistol or fired it (or both) in the Hump concession area during a basketball game. I think that was it for him. Anyone remember more details on this?

I do remember though that Felker moved him to safety when he made Shell the starting QB though.

his first pass was intercepted, I believe in the Alabama game. He was thrown into a tough situation that game if i remember right. He never was the same after he threw it.

I was surprised he was in at that point. He drilled an OLB or DB right between the numbers on his first attempt. Wasn't he from Georgia?

He was arrested while in an Interviewing class with Hank Flick

It was priceless when the cops came and knocked on the door, Flick answered, they handcuffed Hudson, carted him off

The rest of the semester Flick called role and said "Hudson....Hudson....Hudson....oh yeah, prison."

This is when on the next two months

Hudson was in Sherrill's second signing class. He was the guy who fired a gun in the Hump.

last summer and he came in for a few plays after Plump got knocked out. I thought who is that guy and what happened to him? The JP guys were talking him up about how he was the QB of the future, but he looked lost that day. But putting in a true freshman against a pre-jump the shark Joe Lee Dunn in the 4th quarter of a close rivalry game on the road isn't really a good idea.

You are thinking of Albert Williams. Williams was suppose to be the athlete.....I dare to say the next Don Smith but that type of QB. However, like you said. We had Underwood and Shell at the time and Williams got lost in the shuffle.

What ever happened to Underwood? I don't remember the year but he was suppose to be THE QB. Then he breaks a collar bone at Vandy and never comes back......that I remember. Seems like Shell took over after that and started the rest of the way.</p>

Rodney Hudson was the #1 option QB coming out ot HS. He eventually transfered to UAB and played under Watson Brown there. Had a very mediocre career as best as I can remember.

I did figure out that I had confused his name with Rodney Peters, who was a RB on our team from that era, but for the life of me I couldn't remember the QB/DB's name. I think Underwood did come back after the injury but Shell just beat him out. Not sure though. We had a string of QBs around then that started early then either got injured or beaten out and never started as seniors.

I highly suggest reading the book Confederacy of Silence, which features Handy, if you haven't done so.
