After a team scores first and takes a 1-0 lead, do they kind of shut it down a bit on offense and just play to protect the lead? I don't know jack about soccer and am trying to get a handle on it.</p>

That happened last night in the Argentina-Greece game that I watched. Argentina went up 1-0 with 10 minutes left. They went into keep-away mode. On a field that big with that many players on it, it worked pretty well. They would gradually move the ball up-field, then kick it way back to their own end, wash, rinse, repeat.

With 10 minutes left up 1-0, the commentator was already saying it was over.

i know, i know, "it depends" wasn't what you wanted to hear. late in a game they will definitely start to hold on to the ball. if we had scored on one of those missed opportunities around the 80th minute, we would have passed it around a lot and did our best to keep them from ever touching it. most of this would have taken place around mid-field or just behind it on our side of the field. there would be the occasional pass forward to keep them honest and to take advantage of any wholes in their defense but otherwise it would be mainly shut down.

Depends on the team andsituation. If you go up 1-0 early in the first half, then no, most teams would just keep playing like they had, but if you score in the 70th minute or later, then most teams will be more catious and make sure their defending is solid.

Its like being up a touchdownor more late in the game and just running the ball to bleed the clock and then playing field position. Their is no need to throw the ball down the field and take the chance of getting picked off.
