Question about Witt Haggard for BMT...

Its my understanding that BMT has followed Haggard's career somewhat closely and apparently he is going to walk on at Ole Miss along with Sam Noblin and Pack Toler, basically a holytrinity of GWH players for Ole Miss.

I know Noblin is pretty damn good, but I don't know anything about Haggard except that he put up ridiculous stats at Lamar.

Witt doesn't need to be "steered" to State; he just needs the opportunity to be on the team. From what I understand there isn't a decision to be made if all things are equal, i.e. preferred walk-on offer.

I have no idea if Witt's coming to Ole Miss or not, its been posted that he is as a preferred walk on at Ole Miss. Im assuming MSU would offer the same opportunity, since its my understanding that he is a pretty solid player.

Flab is right though, I really didn't ask a question above, but basically I was just wanting an opinion on the type of player he is and whether he could be more than a backup.

Its a great opportunity for Witt, we only have 3 QBs on the team next year, so he will get reps on scout team for sure. Its a really good spot if you are a talented to walk on. Plus, who would pass on the opportunity to be coached bythe Dave Rader.

I played ball with Witt's older brother and everytime our dad's see each other that is what they talk about, and the conversation always ends up with Mr. Haggard talking about Witt. They happened to run into each other last week, and my dad said that Mr. Haggard told him that if Witt gets drafted in baseball, he will sign no matter what he is offered b/c that has always been his dream. He pitches and supposedly can throw it 90-91mph. I'm sure he that's what he tops out at b/c when people tell you what they can throw, they always say what they topped out at, but they always leave the part out that they only hit that once or twice. I have never seen him play baseball though, so I really don't know how good he is. Anyway, with another baseball season to play, he should only get better. It's yet to be seen if he will get drafted, but you have to wonder if he would jump on a baseball scholarship, especially an SEC offer. One last thing, Mr. Haggard can be a homer when it comes to his son, but you really can't blame the man, that's how most dad's are.

he hasn't really been a name that has popped up as far the MLB draft very much as far as I have heard. Of course, that doesn't mean much- there always seems to be someone that is from some small school in Mississippi every year that gets drafted based on signability.

If he's signable, he could very well be taken late in the draft. I think Haggard also catches, so that actually might make him more attractive than his velocity on the mound at his size- 6'2".

The main guys I hear about from Mississippi are Dixon from Terry, (Rashun, Deshaun, I get them mixed up) , Jacoby Jones from Richton, who is a LSU signee, Kaleb Barlow from Jackson Prep- going to Chipola CC are probably the three top guys as far as the draft and signability. MSU does indeed have some guys that I think could be drafted from Mississippi- Wes Rea, Demarcus Henderson, and I think Taylor Stark from Northwest Rankin is going to have a lot of scouts checking him out because of his speed. If he hits better next year, he could be drafted, but at this point I think he's a very marginal draft choice and I feel pretty certain he will go to MSU unless he just breaks out his senior year. Jamie McMahon may get some looks, but he is really learning how to pitch at this point and he has had some football injuries, I think to his non-throwing arm, but he has a really good arm. I would be most concerned with losing Rea and Henderson, but I think both end up at MSU from what I have heard. Chase Luwallen is a good player as well, but I think he definately goes to MSU.

I'm surprised that we haven't made an offer to him to walk-on as of now anyway. I remember a Bill Walsh quote- "You can never have too many QB's". Especially if you're Dan Mullen with his philosophy of in state guys. There are guys that are walk-ons that could be under the radar guys as well. If Whitt wants to go to MSU, at the very least he should be offered a chance to walk-on as should any football player that wants to be a part of the program.

If we lose Haggard to Ole Miss, we definately dropped the ball. Whether he does anything or not.

Offering a walk-on opportunity seems like a no risk venture. If he's a borderline talent, why not offer at least that? Especially if he has publicly expressed interest in your school.

I know the competition is low but the min or so I watched of his film, he looked good. He seemed like a good runner with a decent arm. We aren't exactly overflowing with QBs on the roster. We have Russell, Stegall, and Relf. Add Favre coming in. Stegall is a walkon that might prove to be pretty good since he did have DI offers coming out of high school. Relf is still not consistent enough to win games in the SEC barring a total lack of preparation by the opposing DCoordinator. If UM actually watched film of Relf, he wouldn't even be mentioned as playing more than a couple of snaps a game.

a Rebel. His mom called the house last night and the first thing she said was Hotty Toddy! (is it Toddy or Totty?) It had to be painful for a MSU grad and current bulldog club member to say that. But the family is very happy that he is getting a chance at the D1 level. I (also family) am disappointed that Mullen has apparently chosen not to extend a preferred walk-on offer to him.

David jokes that when their dad introduces them the says "This is my son Witt, and this is my other son... Witts brother." You cant blame his dad for being a homer... The kid has unbelievable talent and is 4.0 gpa smart. He is a good kid. I also understand that David was a hell of a receiver for Lamar back in the day. Broke his leg playing basketball or something. That was before I married into the family.

egg bowl, with a white bread, undersized academy-style qb leading the confeds down scott field for a game-winning touchdown and 2 point conversion, probably on a completion to another undersized, white bread academy chump.

his video was impressive. plus, it sounded like he looked good at our camps. i don't see why we couldn't have offered him a preferred walk-on spot.

do you think he might have considered the fact that we signed a QB this year and um didn't (other than mackey)?

He who? IfMullen, then I have no ideawhat he is thinking... He doesn't answer to me but I would have thoughthe would have emailed me back. All I know for a fact is Tony Hughescalled in the last few weeks of the season to tellMac Barnes that State was no longer looking at Haggard. No explanation given, but it was during the same time we were throwing everything but hookers at Newton and Brunetti. That's when OMstarted in on him.Needless to say Barnes and HaggardSr. were pissed.

that no one else offered. He played in a low private school league and its hard to gauge talent when the corners and pass rushers are not college prospect level.

I was thinking that maybe he thought it could be a shorter path to possible PT at UM rather than State, but you basically answered that anyway. I would be pissed if the school that acted like they were interested in me through recruitment wouldn't even offer me a preferred walk-on spot.

I always thought that Favre and Haggard weren't all that different. If one was worthy of a scholarship, I would've thought that the other was at least worthy of a preferred walk-on.

There is absolutely zero risk to that. We aren't tying up a scholarship. We aren't using a spot someone else would take. The kid and his family are lifelong State fans. All we did is just piss off and piss on people who have supported us, presumably financially to some degree, for years. There is absolutely no reason not to at least get the guy on campus. I mean, who else do we have? At least Haggard is 6'. So what if his competition sucked? He put up the types of numbers you're supposed to put up if the competition is that bad and you're a legitimate player. Bottom line, the guy should have been offered. At the very least, he gives you a solid scout team QB who can both run and throw.

If we think there are 20 players better then him that are willing to play for us as preferred walkons, then why should kick a better player to the curb to offer him?

competitive league where you can get a feel for what he does in decent competition. Look, Mullen and staff saw all the tape on both these guys and offered one of them obviously because they felt he was a D1 guy. Favre seems to be a solid athlete, good guy off the field, hope he does well.

I have zero heartburn about leaving Witt on the outside looking in as long as we are pulling in the big boys ie. Newton, Brunetti, Nance... But once those guys are gone and we have settled on our 5th choice in Favre why can we not throw Haggard a walk-on offer? Especially in a year where our qb recruitment has been severely lacking. And to patdog, if OM feels like he is good enough to walk-on up there then I assure you he is good enough to walk-on at State.

/Like I said earlier, its moot now...

Haven't we learned from Tyson Lee and others that there are reasons why the players weren't offered scholarships to begin with?

when you can add as many as you want. All a preferred walkon is is a player who can practice in August. It was done to put some limits on schools like Nebraska thatused tohave 50 or so "walkons" in addition to their 85 scholarship players.
