Question for Hudspeth backers

Except Bobby Wallace was a proven failure over the extreme long haul at Temple. Hudspeth has no such history of falling flat on his face for nearly a decade. Success at North Alabama is literally the only thing they have in common.

Then let me put it this way. If we hired him it would be like hiring one of the cigar boy’s nephew.

A good head coach has to be able to make decisions based on his own intuition. You guys keep harping on the fact that he knows everyone around MSU and that might turn out to be a really bad thing.

I think we should have a coach with zero ties to the university who is hired based on his ability to lead not who he knows.

I don’t know why I am even bringing this up when the good ol’ boys have been running things there for a long time.

Not the same. He has been a head coach for a long time. Mullen and Smart had never been head coaches. Now these reasons (excuses) are little more than attempts to rationalize his candidacy. Still no answer as to why no other P5 program has approached him...thanks anyway but no thanks. You have your opinion and I have mine..sounds like a fair trade off.

So you're just eliminating G5 head coaches from contention, but we can still hire coordinators from P5 programs. Ok....

You're wrong on all of that.

Hud has the resume. That's what you don't get.

His 'connections' are for recruiting only (head coached in Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee). Nobody cares if he knows the Cigar Boys.

I continue to see some in here salivating (isn't that what Bulldogs do?) over the thought of Hudspeth being the MSU coach. I agree that he would be an upgrade over Moorhead. But that isn't saying much; John L. Smith would be better than Moorhead. My question is this: If Hudspeth would be such a great hire, why didn't another school hire him this year?

Because he would leave that school for Mississippi State.

Hudspeth: 15-22 his last 3 seasons at ULL. That's what would concern me. I'm glad he is doing well on the FCS level in his first year at Austin Peay.
So you're gonna let the very small window of his last 3 seasons at ULL when the school was on probation for what David Saunders and the other former OM coach brought over with them from OM cause you to ignore the other 95% of his career accomplishments?

Not me. I'd love it if we gave Hud a shot. Would also love it if Hud brought Chaney over as well. Even better if he could somehow swing getting Joe Judge to come over as OC and Associate HC....assuming the NY Giants don't offer him the HC position.

Get the AD to pony up whatever it takes to get Aaron Feld away from Oregon as S&C coach and we could be well on our way to a kick *** staff.

Hud has a resume alright. And it ain't all that.

Dear God, we got to be able to do better than Hud. If we can't... Dirk Merklin is going to end up being the high water mark of my lifetime.

Now that's just sad.

I personally don’t really care who he knows or doesn’t know. He’s qualified based on his work that had nothing to do with MSU, and will remain very qualified from a resume standpoint compared to literally anyone who we can reasonably expect to take the job.

Maybe we interview him and 2-3 others and decide that Napier or Clark or whoever else is the no brainer choice. If so, that’s fine. But completely writing off a candidate just strictly based on familiarity / history is just as bad as hiring one for only that reason.

Because Hudspeth isn’t a sexy name, nor would he be the best fit at other schools. For example, Arkansas isn’t looking for someone with strong recruiting ties to MS, and OM wanted to interview him when they originally hired Freeze but the word is he wouldn’t agree to the non-compete terms regarding MSU and other SEC schools. His past ties to David Saunders also made him untouchable for OM’s job now when they hired Kiffen, given how they were intertwined in that scandal as well. He would be a good fit at MSU from a culture perspective, as he knows the area and the recruiting lay of the land as well as anyone possibly could. It’s widely reported that MSU is his dream job which means we’d be able to not have the annual “staying or going” handwringing that came every year with Mullen. That is the core of his appeal to MSU....if he is successful he would bring continuity as well. Big “if” though.

Hud has won everywhere he has been, and done it quickly. He took Austin Peay from 5-6 to the FINAL EIGHT in the playoffs in his first year. He turned ULL around quickly and won 9 games each of his first three years there.

Right now, we need a quick turnaround coach more than a steady progress coach. Even though Moorhead won 14 games, it feels like our team is farther behind and needs new energy and discipline. Many quick turnaround coaches will leave (or be distracted looking to leave) after the quick success, but Hud wouldn't.

We know Hud can recruit to Mississippi State, where we don't really know that for coaches who have recruited well as assistants for top programs or have only recruited bad/average classes to G5 programs.

You mean someone like Joe Moorhead????

Look, Hud fits the profile of what it takes for a coach to be successful at MS State:

-He is a relentless recruiter and has strong recruiting ties to MS, AL, LA, and TN. This is who we are.

-He runs a power spread run based offense. This is also who we are.

-He is a great identifier and developer of talent (he had 6 players drafted to the NFL during his time at ULL). Remember the term “player development program”? This is who we are.

-He is energetic and hard working and players love him.

JoMo isn’t checking many (if any) of those boxes.

Are you kidding me? Have you actually even looked at his resume? The only negative on it is the last 3 years at ULL when they were on probation, scholly reduction and were forced to take a chance on that highly-rated QB who transferred from LSU, but turned out to be a flop.

AS has been discussed, the probation was tied to Saunders and another former OM coach who brought that whole scheme and contacts with them. Ole Miss never told anybody about what those two had done. It was considered a mitigating factor by the NCAA, and why those guys got show causes and not Hud.

No... Someone like JWS or Dan Mullen.

This is exactly what I was talking about. If we hire him, we will have a crowd of Hud zealots that believe he parted Chadwick Lake and can suffer no criticism. I've seen just as many failures, if not more, as successes with this type of hiring for other football coaches at other schools.

There aren't many Bear Bryants out there.

Good grief. Are you just afraid that if we were to hire Hud that no one would be critical of him? Come on, at this day in age there is no one immune to criticism. Ask Saban.

I doubt we will hire him, but he undoubtedly fits what we need. And if you want to stick your head in the sand and deny it, then that’s on you.

That's rich.

I'm out of the argument. You boys hire Hud. Baseball is coming on soon.

I’ve seen people throw out Hud’s Name here consistently for years. Honestly, I always thought we could do better, it got old hearing about it. I don’t really believe that anymore. Partly because he actually has a resume as a head coach, and partly because it just makes sense. I think he would win the press conference, and he’s in a good position to surround himself with good assistants. That is, if he gets the $$$. It’s a safe hire, but it’s also a hire that could end up being a home run in the end.

He’s actually coached here recently, so why would any past skeletons be an issue?

Hudspeth is simply the proverbial “devil you know.” He’d be a lazy hire... kind of like how Cohen was the lazy hire.

Terrible comparison. Hudspeth actually has a long listed resume for the position. Cohen had never even been close to being an AD.

Count me now in on the Hudspeth train.
