I only go back as far as Michael Davis and Kevin Bouie (I'm sure I slaughter the poor mans name) but have we ever sucked at running back?

Just a little FYI, Kevin Bouie's name is pronounced boo-ee. Not that you care, just thought I would add a little more pointless knowledge to the conversation.

Hank Phillips was OK.

My worst RB memory is "that was Galloway, the ball carrier" some 13 or so plays in a row not counting the punts.

Last 30 years in a nut shell: RB has not been a liability. TEs, generally speaking, have been good but under utilized. OL not dominating but some years very good and some years down right embarrassing. WR ditto. QB? No super stars, several have been good, ones true calling was furs not football. nuff said.
Does that help?

have we ever sucked a running back?

I have never sucked a football player of any position. Now whether or not a group of fans did so, I cannot say, but no one ever asked me, nor would I have participated.

DS, check your email.

I've been following the team since 1984. I think we've always had decent running backs during that time. They may not have been great, but I don't recall us having a marginal set of running backs.

may have been our best combo, both spent time in the NFL. Can't remember ever being without a serviceable running back in my memories of MSU

Actually, one of the best we have ever had was Walter Packer. He was absolutely awesome. Played with Felker.

probably didn't play much together at all. Haddix got on the field in '79 because Jones and Copeland were injured.

Now there's a combo - Jones and Copeland.

Haddix and George Wonsley, Al Rickey Edwards, Henry Koontz, Lamar Windom, Elmer Wilson were our backs from 80 - 83. That was a badass bunch. Throw in Donald Ray King in 1980 only. Any of those guys would start for next year's team

during Prince's time here had this to say:

me: "Prince playing this week?" (he had been hurt)

player: "Yeah, we're playing Memphis St. he'll be good to go. Got Auburn next week though, so he'll probably get hurt in practice .... on tuesday probably."

That is one of the worst years I can remember. Certainly not saying Griffith wasn't talented, but it seems like we had a hard time running the ball that year.

So I guess that doesn't qualify, because we just sucked - our RB did not necessarily suck.

b/c Norwood was on that team. That was the year Dontae kept getting carries when he shouldn't have.
And looking back, Reid led the team in carries. Ridiculous.

Not both NFL guys, but for my money give me the Justin Griffith & Decenzo Miller combo.

Jackie had something against giving a Freshman RB a lot of carries. He wanted to bring him along slowly because all his non-ball carrying responsibilities needed to be learned.

Norwood is an alumnus of my high school. So I was pretty familiar with him before he got to State. I remember his first big play. We needed a big play against Ole Miss. I'm in the stands yelling "give it to Norwood" and people are looking at me like "who's Norwood". Toss sweep to Norwood. Looked like if he hustled he MIGHT turn the corner and get a first down. He did. Then he stiff-armed the corner and juked the safety and ran for the endzone. Then he slowed down before scoring and got tackled at about the 5. Jackie say "Jerious, this isn't high school - you can't slow down like that".

Brandon Thornton starting, freshman Anthony Dixon backup, followed by Justin Williams and Arnil Stallworth?

That's the worst I can ever remember.

I was thinking back through the backs at state. Walter Packer. Dennis Johnson. Michael Haddix. James Otis Doss. Those guys were fun to watch. I can still see Walter Packer's "tear away jersey" flapping around in my mind's eye.

I remember one TD run against Vandy where he was unstoppable. I think he used to be a badass.

was in the early 80's.....does the name DAVID FAIR even ring a bell....I watched this goof break off a run in the first quarter against TN and get run down by a LB only to fumble the frikin ball at the TN 6-yd line...3-more carries and he gained NOTHING...TN went on to skull drag us 45-?...I remeber the goof was a cut up dude according to other players but dropped like a toddler in a strong gust of wind when he was touched....he was our starting tailback.....that is my vote ....HANDS DOWN.....!!!!!!!
