On Friday morning, the girlfriend and I are traveling to Austin to visit her family and have a nice 5 day getaway. As part of the trip I'm of course making the pilgrimage to Reliant Stadium on Saturday morning. I've never been to Austin, Houston, or any other part of Texas. Does anyone have a good route suggestion or a good idea of how long it takes? I'd like to have a good plan of attack and hopefully keep the inevitable suckitude of traffic in both cities to a minimum. I'll be coming from the Cedar Park area of Austin if that makes any difference. Google says take US 290 all the way and I'll be there in under 3 hours, but I also considered cutting south to I-10 so that I enter further on the south side. Any suggestions are much obliged.

3 hours. From Austin Take highway 71 to interstate 10. In houston go south on interstate 610 amd exit kirby at the stadium. Pretty simple route.

others will tell you the 290 route, but it has lots of stops through towns that I like to avoid.

This is the correct answer. Although there aren't many times anyone should ever say "you should take I-10".
