Question for the board, about Varnado and the SEC tourney run....

If the following are the two scenarios that happen, which would you choose:

1) Varnado leads MSU to a SEC tourney win, and a 13 seed, but a first round close loss, and then Varnado leaves for the draft and doesn't come back.

or

2) MSU loses in the SEC tourney, goes to NIT, doesn't win it, and Varnado comes back for senior season.

Which would you choose? I had this discussion with a MSU fan yesterday and asked him if the SEC tourney win was worth it if Varnado leaves early and he said absolutely. I thought so as well, but thought it was an interesting question. Do you take the guaranteed SEC tourney win, and a NCAA bid, or would you rather roll the dice and think next year with Varnado, MSU has a chance to be 3-4 seed in the tournament and make a run.

Im not saying MSU won't win against UW, in fact I think it is a great matchup for MSU same with Purdue, just wondering what everyone would choose.

I'll go with #1. I'll take a Dance ticket for the current Dance any day of the year.

And I don't look at our players going pro early as a bad thing. It only attracts more players that could potentially go pro. That's also why I'm a fan of one and dones coming to State.

Even if Varnado left, the excitement for next year will be at a near all time high as far as expectations. Going to the NIT this year would have been good, but I would trade Varnado for an NCAA bid all day long. I see what you are saying, but I think Swat comes back next year, barring a deep run. If we matched up with Uconn in the sweet sixteen and swat faced off with Thabeet and faired well, he could really jump up in the scout's eyes.

I'll be curious to see how JV changes your team when he leaves whether it's after this year or next.

You'll have to go to a much different look as a team defensively if he does go. For right now, you can basically play tough perimeter defense and dare players to try to get in the lane to create. Without JV back there, that'll have to change a little bit.

Assuming only for the question that MSU loses to UW and Varnado does leave, do you take the trade?

You can either have Varnado for a full season next year, or you can go one and done in this year's tourney? You also get the SEC tourney title with the one and done, so that is something to consider.

Im not saying I disagree with you, just trying to spark a different debate.

It's kind of a tough question. For just a simple NCAA Tournament where we go 1 and out, I'd probably rather take Varnado for the next year. But any kind of overall SEC Championship (Overall Regular Season or Tournament) is very, very special. I don't think any one player is worth keeping for another year in exchange for something like that. But either of those things is going to guarantee you a trip to the NCAA's. So you can't really give up a trip to the NCAA's if you don't give up the SEC Championship.

I don't really thing there is much if any bearing on winning the SEC tourney title and sneaking into the NCAAs as a 13 seed to whether Swat leaves early or not. If he's projected high enough he will probably give it a look and be evaluated, if not, he will be back and that would be the case even if we had lost yesterday and were headed to the NIT right now. I don't think JV would think that somehow his college career has been culminated by the fact that he won the SEC tourney and MVP and is getting to at least play a 2nd straight year in the NCAAs. Team-wise he, I believe, will realize that potentially much more could be accomplished next year with all these players returning with him. But, bottom line, it still remains for most any player that regardless of their team's accomplishments in a given year, if that player's draft projection is in the first round then he has to give very serious consideration to leaving because a bird in the hand is always worth more than two in the bush.

To be honest, I think JV should stay. I would Trade a NCAA bid for him any day of the week. We could use SWAT back next year otherwise we are Relying soley on Augustus, I mean he's good but not SWAT good. I think we should Get Jarvis to stay on this 1 more year. Then we run the table again next season Win the SEC tourney again, Run the tables in the NCAA Tourney with a more and better experienced team.

This weekend was great, but I think we could win an overall conference championship and make a nice run in the NCAA tourney next year with everybody back.

Kodi is the main one I don't want to see go because he should develop into our best low post scorer next year. Jarvis is good and I love having him on our team, but we need a good post up player and Jarvis hasn't been one on a consistent basis due to his lack of strength and size. Hopefully both of them stick around, though.
