Question for the board:

Somewhere around 97-98 MSU had a good baseball player that hit a tree in a 4 wheeler accident and it messed him up pretty bad. Seems like the accident was on Will Clark's land in Noxubee County, but I might be wrong on that.

I can't remember his name. Started with an H? maybe.

Anyway, my question is, what was his name and whatever happened to him? Was he ever able to play again?

At one time I knew the answer to these questions, but apparently I've killed off those brain cells since that time.

and to answer your question, the accident messed him up pretty bad. I know he had some vision and speech problems as well as some muscle movement problems. To be honest with you I can't remember if he played after the accident. From what I heard he is lucky to be alive according to the guys with him.

was a pretty good infielder (3b?) and expected to contribute a great deal during the 98 season before he got hurt, i believe. i think he had a few other family members that were on the teams, too??

I looked it up after you provided his name.

Apparently the accident was in '96, which was the year he was an All-American.

From what I could tell, he did play at MSU again, but I don't think he played up to his previous level.

to play at MSU. He hit .354 with 16 HRs his soph year.

He tried to play again after the accident but was not even a shell of his former self.

Imagine that bat in the middle of Lee, Piatt, and Freeman.

That's actually why I asked about him. I sort of knew him back then. I haven't thought about him in years, then I did and couldn't remember his name.

I agree, he was/is a good guy.

is somewhat unerrated to me when compared to the 85 team. The 97 team had Dubose, Matt Ginter, Travis Chapman, Adam Piatt that all played MLB at some point in time. They also had Jon Knott who RS that year. The 1985 time also had four players that played MLB, but they had a much greater impact than the guys on that team. That team is the "what could have been team?" for MSU because we could have conceivably had Kirk Presley (would we have called him the "Velvet revolver if he had played QB at MSU?") and Roy Oswalt in the rotation along with DuBose. and Jeremy Jackson starting midweek. And then Hauswald in the middle of the lineup.

And beyond their careers at MSU, Piatt had a promising MLB career derailed by meningitis and Ginter and DuBose I believe had alcohol related problems that have caused them in part to be banished to the minors.

Nonetheless, that team made it to Omaha, and I really thought that they had a great shot at winning it, but they lost their first game and just couldn't make up the ground.
