Question for the board...........

Rummaging through the Daily Herald on Saturday morning, I stumbled onto this captivating story and was inspired to inquire of the board their opinions.

The Friday evening match between Fremd and Hoffman Estates produced a 51-0 blowout, which piqued my curiosity largely in view of the fact Hoffman Estates' football program has seemingly been resurrected from the dead due to the competence of Mike Donatucci. The former Fremd coach has done a masterful job reviving this moribund program, but I was absolutely stunned to read the Hoffman Estates' coach chose not to play a single starter in the season finale.

I certainly take into account the concern over the unspecified number of injuries HE players incurred, injuries can be stubborn, and I consider Donatucci's reasoning over his team resting on the bubble between 6A and 7A, but I am confounded by the option HE exercised to sit every starter.

I am not accusing the HE staff of engaging in trickery, waving the white flag, nor am I suggesting this 51-0 outcome was the result of some unwholesome agreement among the two head coaches to boost Fremd's seeding in 8A, a probability which ace reporter, Mr. Quagliano, does accentuate in his story.

What is clear to me is this decision was calculated and not a determination made in a brief, manic and confused moment.

Wisdom can be found in the most unlikely places: Perhaps some member here can explain to me their interpretation of Donatucci's intent to prepare for the post season included sitting his entire starting lineup.

I welcome explanations from any member except Dean, who now occupies every position on my **** list.

If that is the case then it shows how one can game the seeding process - also separately an overal SOS should have more weight (a 30 Pt West Aurora team as 7th seed even if 9-0 shouldn't be seeded ahead of a bunch of 8-1 teams who are in the mid 40s). But I digress

Separately sitting a majority starters and not even playing them for the game (much less a half is sort of a joke.

Teams that lose (and lose badly) tend to go into the playoffs playing a little tighter and in a funk

I've never head of something like that happening in High School Football or College Football before. Prep's 312 Podcast was talking about it a little on their bracketing show.

Normally you want to get as high a seed as possible and so benching/resting all your starters wouldn't make sense in my mind unless one feels you have absolutely no hope to win the game. Example a 1a Coop team with 18 kids on the roster playing Loyola

If the primary reason for resting the starters was concern over injury.....I guess I would pose another question - why not just forfeit the game? That way there is zero chance of any Varsity injuries on either side

Holy Cow It's Wittman 1st of all,...

If HE was that banged up then why not rest them. I know it goes against everything high school football should be about but with this broken playoff system play the game,...

And how did the coach break it to the senior players that, though you have been playing this game that you love since you were nine years old and tonight may be very likely the second to last game you will ever suit up for, ... you're not gonna play. And also be prepared for the opposing team and fans who will be whooping it up as they lay a humiliating beating on your school. Did the kids dress for the game or just show up in jeans and jersey's?

i think it stinks. possibly trying to game the system to get home field advantage for a second round match-up. Trying to boost Fremd's seeding with good or bad intentions. (under what circumstances did he leave Fremd?) Resting injured players or trying to prevent injury of starters would be at least a reasonable justification...if it weren't the entire starting lineup.

I was at the game. I think Coach Donatucci just wanted to rest his starters and give his reserves some playing time. I do not think it was done to elevate the seed of Fremd. It appeared to me that no one other than Hoffman know of this sitting out the starters other than Hoffman coaches and players.

Those reserve players can't be feeling too good about themselves coming off the field after that game. Hoffman Estates had a few blow out games and played JV so the backups should have gotten some time during the year.

Not sure going into the playoffs after losing 51-0 is a good strategy but I don't know the team or the coach. Fremd should have gotten some nice work in though so it could have helped them and then maybe Hoffman Estates coach was just helping a buddy out while sacrificing his own kids for whatever the cause was. We'll know Saturday night.
