Is that massive group of SOs and JRs their starting line? That is a massive group if so.

Who is Sterling's bell cow in all this offense?

Yep. The Ochs OL is very young. The smallest OL is a senior. The rest are Juniors and Sophomores.

Sterling really doesn't have a "bell cow". They have 3 running backs that rotate like clockwork every 2 plays throughout the game. So far it doesn't matter the situation as far as third and short, 2nd and long, etc., they have stuck to the rotation. I think their senior technically has the most carries but the other 2 (juniors) might have a little more yardage. This is a guess only, I'd say the three roughly average about 10 carries a game and 85 yards per game each. All 3 bring a little something different to the table.

Glas, I thought teams run TO because they have smaller, more athletic O-linemen that can veer or arc release and get second level quickly or execute the backside scoop effectively?

Why so much size? I'm confused.

Well, three successful heads are just as good as one.

IIRC, those mid-2000s Carmel teams had some size up front. Aint 'no coach going to bench a 6-4 275-pounder who can maul dudes.

Agreed on that one. They're blessed with having 3 legit guys, a lot of quick scores and long runs by all of them and all have proven their worth. This week against Dekalb is a great barometer going into the playoffs. This will be the first week that Sterling will be matched up with a team as/more athletic than them all year.

So you're saying get a lead on Sterling since they don't throw much,...

Haha that is a good point. As it hasn't happened yet, quite possibly that's the way to do it. They've outscored people somewhere around 365-52 so they haven't needed to put it in the air much. Tthey've still been throwing 8-12 times a game for decent success. A lot of their drives are 4-6 plays total because they'll hit on a long run.

Looking forward to Friday to see what might be two pretty evenly matched teams play. Sterling has played some traditionally tough teams (in 4a/5a) that might be having some down years this year. It's been tough to gauge what the expectations should be for this team.

It's worth mentioning that sterling's offensive threats have compiled their numbers while typically playing 3 quarters or less.

sterling's starting offense has scored three 4th qtr touchdowns this season. all three came in the first minute of the 4th qtr, two of them on the first play in the 4th.

CCHS Fan-Cary Grove has had some pretty big athletic OL and has done well. CoM has had some pretty big athletic linemen and done well. Athletic is the key word. And yes...you can run TO with smaller athletic linemen. Sometimes your best high school OL are 200-230 lbs.

And the defense is just as impressive if not more. Starters have allowed 19 points in 8 games.

I can vouch that Sterling is a very good and fine football team in all phases of the game. I have not seen any weaknesses. Their defense is superb and sets up their offense. They are my pick to win 5A.....because of their defense and it's the difference.

Sterling broadcasts through the nfhs network. Good broadcast quality. I'm not sure if all nfhs games are or not but it's a subscription required broadcast.

sterling's special teams are solid, too. kicker is 49/51 on PATs and 5/7 on FGs.

funny thing about sterling is they don't really pass the "eye test". the first thing you notice when you look at them as a team is there is not much size. in fact, they look kinda small. but, they get the job done. they have a lot of team speed and a little bit of "nasty" on defense.

Gonna possibly be a tougher than average first round game for Sterling

If The Golden Warriors can get past DeKalb and be #1 seed in the north I think they get Westinghouse and not Nazareth if that is the matchup you are referring to. Westinghouse is the dog in week 9 game and is tied in playoff points with Naz. They have fewer points against defeated opponents though. This assumes the 5-4 point total is too high for teams like Thornridge and Woodstock North if RF could upset them. If not Sterling would most likely get one of them. First things first. Have to beat a very good DeKalb team.

even if they lose to dekalb and fall to 8-1, it's still possible for sterling to be the #1 seed in the 5a "north".

Morgan Park would be a higher seed should Sterling lose and they beat Westinghouse I believe. Hopefully the Warriors just take care of business at DeKalb and its a moot point.

This all assumes that the IHSA doesn't gerrymander the north/south line again this year and send Sterling south!

Shouldn't have to worry about that this year...no threats of JCA/Naz final which would cause screwy things to happen with the bracket. The quarterfinal match ups, sterling in the south, etc, etc, what a show they put on with that last year
