Question re: National Respect

I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and Mel Kiper was on talking college football and specifically SEC football. Greenie asked the question of Kiper, (paraphrasing) "you look at the SEC, and you've got Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and LSU. Which is the biggest threat to Alabama? Is there a team in the SEC that's a threat to Alabama?"

Kiper went on to explain that LSU was the biggest threat because they play in Red Stick in November, talked about last year, yada yada.

State wasn't mentioned once. Second place in the west. Undefeated. Play Bama in a week and a day. Not mentioned once.

My question: Would you rather get the attention now, or are you glad we're flying under the national radar until we get Bama behind us?

I've always thought we'd have to beat Bama to get the national respect. So I guess I'm not surprised. Maybe there will be more hype leading up to it next week, but I actuallty hope that Bama takes us lightly.

I think it's mainly a trend with Mel Kiper. There's a video on espn.com that has Mel Kiper and Todd McShay talking about week 8. Naturally, the conversation gets on who will test Alabama. Kiper actually brings up Tennessee and says they'll be Bama's first real test and the next test they'll have will be against LSU. Just completely skipped over us, but brought up a team that we beat rather convincingly. Here's the video for anyone that wants to see it.

I'll admit that it frustrates me from time to time to see State get glossed over by a lot of these "pundits", but really... until we beat Bama or LSU... I can't really be too mad about it. And honestly... it really doesn't matter if they're glossing over us or not... Bama is not the type of team that feeds into the media, and I'm willing to bet that they're going to take us very seriously. So regardless... at this point it doesn't really matter. If we want respect, we'll have to take it.

Beat Alabama and the respect will come.

Seriously, I think the team no one is talking about is Texas A&M. They control their own destiny. If they beat LSU this weekend, which I think is likely, they are in the thick of the West race.

In fact, if something like this happened:
A&M beats LSU
State beats Alabama
A&M beats State
Alabama beats A&M
LSU beats State and Alabama

Assuming everyone wins the remainder of their games, you would have a four way tie for the West title.
Alabama (6-2, losses to MSU and LSU)
Texas A&M (6-2, losses to Alabama and Florida)
LSU 6-2 (losses to Texas A&M and Florida)
MSU 6-2 (losses to Texas A&M and LSU)

Texas A&M goes to the Championship Game in that situation.

A similar situation could occur if we were to lose to Bama and LSU, but beat Texas A&M, while A&M beats LSU and Bama, and LSU beats Bama in Baton Rouge

Bama (6-2, losses to LSU and A&M)
A&M (6-2, losses to MSU and Florida)
LSU (6-2, losses to A&M and Florida)
MSU (6-2, losses to LSU and Bama)

In this situation as well, A&M wins the four way tiebreaker.

I really don't care. You have to beat good teams to get respect. So far Tennessee is the only decent team we have played and they are approaching dumpster fire levels with Dooley. Until we beat someone worth a damn it's not going to happen.

Pretend you are a sports guy that works in Bristol and had never been to Starkville. With State barely making a bowl last season and not having a signature win, why would you assume they are one of the best teams in the conference? It's like Kansas State and Oregon State. I don't think they are really worth a ****. I'm sure that's how most people look at us. We have to actually do something to get into those discussions. ESPN isn't biased towards us. They are much better since we got Mullen here.

I agree. It's frustrating sometimes though. I watched college football final with my wife last week, and she was excited to hear what they had to say about us beating UT. I told her they showed UT's kickoff return for TD and said we ran the score up by throwing that last pass. My exact words to her after that were, "Until we beat Bama, we will get no attention or respect."

Another thing I think hurts us is the fact the media was on the MSU bandwagon after our 2010 season. We finished the season ranked at number 15 after walloping Michigan in the Gator Bowl. We started next season ranked, and a lot of people predicted we would do quite well next season. We then had a disappointing season as far as expectations were concerned and now they're a little reluctant to jump back on the bandwagon. Remember media pundants careers depend on the accuracy of their analysis and predictions.

The funniest thing in this scenario is that if A&M makes the SECCG, Mississippi is still the one and only SEC West team to not make it to Atlanta.

You guys must be attentively listening for them to "disrespect" us. I've heard nothing but honest, somewhat reserved respect. They give us mad props for being in the position that we are in, and for the job that Mullen has done, but they are not quite ready to place us in the elite category. Exactly as they should treat it, given that we actually haven't beaten anyone...and struggled in the one hostile environment we've been in thusfar this year.

They are getting ready to hype our game with Alabama next weekend out of their minds. It will start this Saturday night and go all week leading up to the game. Will be arguably the most hyped regular season MSU game in history..

This is pretty much the equivalent of some guy in Kansas claiming we still aren't worth a **** even if we beat Bama next week.

We have years of mediocrity to overcome. We will not be considered legitimate in these discussions until we prove to be consistently good.

See, I don't get that though. 3 losses to top 15 teams = dumpster fire? I mean, between the 3 teams they've lost to they all have a total of 1 loss. Dumpster fires are teams that go 0-8 in the SEC. While UT has no SEC wins, they'll win at least 2 SEC games this year and can still make a bowl. The dumpster fire aspect to UT is completely their fans freaking out because they think they should be in the top 10 after having 3 bad-mediocre seasons in a row.

Well, ESPN is not going to give us any respect...

If we keep playing teams like Jackson State and Alcorn!!

Our own fans fall into the same trap we get frustrated with the media doing.

Leading up to the UT game, it was considered our chance to prove ourselves. Then once we win, they're no good, and we've yet to play anyone.

Actually, you are wrong. State and Bama are the only two that control their own destiny. If either win out, they are the West Champs.

No way they beat LSU with that defense they have. LSU will play keep away, and pound the ball on 'em.

A&M's problem is their poor defense. Manziel is borderline Cam Newton II,

but he doesn't have the guys on the other side of the football like Cam did at Auburn. LSU is going to shut him down like Florida did in the second half of their game with A&M. I wouldn't be surprised to see A&M get beat along the lines of 31-14. If LSU can run against SC's defense, they'll torch A&M's. Manziel has put up ridiculous numbers, but they've been against poor defenses.

just take the maroon glasses off and replace Mississippi State with Kentucky. Everyone on this site would be ignoring Kentucky and you would laugh at them for demanding respect.

Perspective is really important.

...I don't think too many people on this site would be ignoring Kentucky if they were 6-0 right now...

Double actually, you are wrong. In regards to the SEC West race, State, Bama, Texas A&M, and LSU all still control their own destiny. If A&M wins out, they will be 7-1 with wins over everyone in the West, so there is no possible tiebreaker they could lose. Same deal with LSU.

Do you watch sports?

Look at the Orioles or the Athletics ...until you do it the National Respect won't be there

They don't go out of their way to get egg on their face. They overwhelmingly take favorites to win division/make playoffs and ride them into the dirt.

I remember when the Saints were running en route to a SuperBowl the whole thing was they haven't ever won a playoff game in colder than a 40 temp or how do you expect them to win 4 playoff games in a row when they have only won 4 in their history. It is the same song different verse, you don't get respect on the national scene until you achieve the goal you are after.

We won't get national respect if we beat Bama, they will come up with one more excuse as to why AJ had a bad day or the kicker missed a fg or the running back fumbled 4 times ...it will just turn to they can't be LSU, you need proof go back to Auburn week "that was our season" ...oh wait auburn sucks lets see what they do against TN ...now it is wait till they play alabama or we still haven't beaten anyone with a winning record

17 a bowl game. We want the National Championship!

To be honest about two weeks ago i heard him on a late night ESPN radio show and Kiper actually said our team was the one to watch out for (guy asked him nationally not SEC) and us being underrated, mentioned to "watch out if they are undefeated headed into Bama", just figured i would share what i heard him say that night

All ESPN does with everything is regurgitate what the consumer wants to hear. You choose to listen to what the most percentage of people want to hear.

National respect would be MSU's downfall...

...MSU always has more sports success when flying under the radar. The last thing our players need is to hear the idiots on ESPN kissing their asses. I almost hope MSU beats MTSU by only 3 so MSU will be a 23 point underdog going into the Bama game. All the well-groomed models on ESPN will be predicting a Bama cake walk. That's exactly what ESPN needs to be saying about this team. It's an "us against the world" attitude with this football team, & Dan Mullen is playing it like a Stradivarius violin.

First of all...

We haven't done anything to earn the respect of anyone. We have won all the games we were supposed to.

Now, personally, I'm glad we are under the radar. Alabama is playing @ UT this week and @ LSU next week; we are essentially a trap game. Saban knows that Dan Mullen's bulldogs always play hard and pose a challenge, so they aren't going to take us lightly, but with the media not saying a word about us maybe they will be more focused on LSU and drained from a rivalry game this weekend.

It seems we are always just a few plays away that put the game out of hand, maybe this year we will get these plays to go our way.
