Question regarding Hudspeth

I never post here, pretty much stick to Nafoom as I'm not one to post on other school's message boards. I'm a Rebel fan, but life long UL Ragin' Cajuns fan.

So I'm curious as to y'alls opinions on Hudspeth. I read the longer thread on him, and I have a couple of questions. First off, how much control did he have over y'alls offensive play calling? I know he ran a spread-type offense at UNA, but I'm curious if he had any say so with Mullen.

Secondly, what kind of recruiter was he? What can we expect? UL is in very fertile recruiting territory, and our old coach didn't recruit at all. I would think that someone with decent energy and understanding would do very, very well. We're not competing against LSU, but more against Tulane, La. Tech, Houston, etc.

Finally, to answer a couple of questions I saw in the other thread. I don't know about him taking any of your guys yet, but I would find it hard to believe that Melvin would be coming with him. As far as salary goes, the Cajuns are reportedly willing to pay somewhere around $325,000 or so for the head coach, and will hopefully have enough left to pay good assistants. We started the RCAF a couple of years ago, to try and supplement pay in these areas. The money has been slowly building up.

Also, I don't think he would have been hired if not for his experience as a head coach, but his time with Mullen has absolutely helped him out. I don't know if we would have hired him straight from DII, and spending time under Mullen and learning some of his offense is obviously an additional bonus. I think that Florida's collapse after Mullen left shows just how good Mullen is, and I think that in turn increases the value of his coordinators.

Thanks for any insight.

He didn't call any plays. He wasn't our OC. He was the receivers coach.

I don't think we will miss him much. I believe he is easily replaceable. The only thing I could see is if it scares off some of our recruits. It may or may not.

he is a pretty good recruiter. About how much control he had over the offense, I have no idea. Our receivers and passing game did seem to get better as the year progressed, so I would probably credit him with that.

I don't know how much influence he had on the play-calling, but I wouldn't think it would be much. He was on the field, and I think signaled in the plays.

He was a good recruiter, but he knows the area very well.

The one thing that I did notice, it didn't seem like he matched the energy of the rest of the staff. Probably just his nature.

All in all, I think it's a great higher for U LA-LA.

I changed it up for you, maybe you'll like this one better.

Also, thanks to those who responded seriously. I'm hoping this hire works out well for the Cajuns.

1) He has a lot of energy, all the time. He may have more energy than Mullen.
2) He is a very good recruiter. Players, parents, etc...all like hime. That's where we may miss him.
3) He will run some form of the spread and that was his forte in Div 1AA
4) He did not do any play calling here. Keonnig calls almost all of the plays. Mullen and Hevesy have some input.

Edited to add # 5) You should hope that Mullen stays here forever. If Hud is successful and Mullen leaves one day...Hud is coming home.

That is just what I was looking for. I was pretty sure he didn't have much input with calling plays, but I'm not too worried about that as he has play calling experience elsewhere. My biggest question was really in regards to recruiting, and I wouldn't had been confident in his ability had he not been at a DI school prior to this hire.

The more I read on him, the more excited I get. We need a spark and a guy with some energy in the worst way.

That actually wouldn't bother me too much. If that happens, it (hopefully) means that he's done well here. That would be the first time in forever that a coach came here and actually moved UP, not retire. That would only help us in the future.

Also, glad his wife is apparently hot. Pics would be good, but I'll take y'alls word for it.

and been successful at every stop. I expect he'll do well at ULL. I think him leaving will hurt us a little in recruiting, but we'll be okay. This is what good coaches do. They move up. His time spent as a position coach in the SEC probably is exactly what he needed from a career standpoint. This is a good move for him and I don't think it'll be his last stop.

HUD was his favorite coach. He's real tough on his players, but my brother said he'd fight for you and have your back if he saw you working hard in practice and the weight room. Seems like someone you want to play far from that standpoint.
