They said they like that Mullen is stocking up on high school talent, and how only one commitment is a JUCO guy. Then they gave Mullen credit for focusing on in-state recruiting.

because I know that back when Felker was the coach, wasn't that kind of sort of how he recruited so well? I know he wasn't hauling in half of the Dandy Dozen every year, and I'm not sure that Felker ever put together a class as touted as this one may be, but I seem to remember a TON of Mississippians on Jackie's first two teams that were "built by Rockey" and perpetuated his possibly legit myth that he was a great recuiter.

Also, I have a media guide from 1980, and most of the guys on that team were also from Mississippi. A LOT of them were from them coast.

I think Jackie became way too dependent on the JUCO leagues, but I think part of that was because so many football players in Mississippi were having grade problems, and the only way we could get them was to sign and place them at whatever JUCO and then get them later. I'm saying that in response to the only one JUCO commit comment.

Croom just had no clue. There were so many recruiting feaux peaux's. Like having classes without a QB, recruiting Ty Evans, to somehow alienating and losing Chris Garrett, and then ripping Pat Patterson after he de-committed. I also think that Croom relied way too much on out of state guys and not enough on in-state guys.

But, I really like the way Dan is doing things with recruiting. MSU has made a commitment to be Mississippi's University, and they've really focused hard on getting the best players in the state- and he is doing that. I also like how Dan and his staff are finding guys that maybe don't have a ton of stars, but they have great size, height, speed, and they are guys that can potentially play several positions- like Price, Market, Rufus Warren, and McKinney from Rosa Fort. But he is mixing that in with guys that are bluechips like Brassell, Dee Arrington, CJ Johnson, and Joe Morrow. I like what we're doing. Those two star guys may make our "recruiting rankings" go down some, but I won't complain with a class in the 20's and a lot of high ceiling guys.

he said he realizes he lost the program when he began recruiting nation wide. They had success and he began to cherry pick players from across the nation. He said that looking back on it he realized that he was winning with local FL players. When he started to sign national players they didnt' play for FSU with the same pride as the local guys. They might have had more talent, but they didnt' have the same heart or pride and they didn't play together as a team. By the time he realized this it was too late, UF had already started to use it against him thatFSU had abandoned FL. He couldn't get back into old strong holds of talent and it cost him his job in the long run.

People here are homebodies in general. We like to associate others people with us.

So, what happens is a kid from Batesville may see Nick Brassell and Kendrick Market playing for MSU, and then they may say- "Well that's where I want to go because Brassell played there." A guy like Market may very will have become a MSU fan because of Derek Pegues. I know in an interview, he said that he became a State fan when he was in the seventh grade, which I believe was about the same time that Pegues was a freshman for us.

I saw an interview from a guy in Meridian that plays WR who said "I want to go to MSU because Tyler Russell and Chris Smith are there".

There are going to be some guys like Tyler Russell that grew up MSU fans and always wanting to play at MSU, but there are also going to be a lot of "casual" fans or guys that really have very few loyalties one way or the other. If we can get a "tie" to their community, odds are they are going to pull for MSU- at least in a casual way. That helps us put our foot in the door down the line.

as many,,,,

so far none of the big 3 here have been able to create themselves into being the "go to" place for football... nobody's been able to separate themselves from the other 2

if one of them ever could, I think they could occassionaly create a top 10 team...

I think MSU would have an advantage over UM and USM if this ever would happen..

been waiting on it for 40 years so I'm not going to hold my breath till it happens

There's a big 2 in Mississippi, then there's clear gap before you get to the 3rd team.

even though the dead buzzards would like you to thinks so...

a good coach with the help of some others could turn MSU into THE Miss place for football players to stay home and win on the big scene....
