Quickley vs Maxey - NBA Draft Question

Why is it that Maxey an expected lottery pick and the exact same height as Quickley at 6'3". You never hear NBA Analyst say to Maxey "he would be a first rounder if he wasn't an undersize 2 guard". However you hear this reference for Quickley all the time. BBN why do you think this is the case especially with Quickley being a better outside shooter than Maxey?

"His performance this season was impressive enough that he’s now popping up on some draft radar, although most project him as a second-rounder due to being an undersized shooting guard."

If you have to ask this question you don't understand the NBA. Maxey is 4x the athlete and can run the point much better and can get to the hole whenever he pleases and can score from all levels. Quickley is a 6'3 shooting guard who isn't very athletic at all and isn't very quick honestly. Quick will play in the NBA but he needed the tourney and the combine , neither of which is happening now , to make sure he would be drafted . Thus both EJ and Quick , 2 guys I considered gone , I now consider more then likely back.

I didn't say anything about how I would evaluate, I was just stating, based on historical draft decisions, what scouts do. What's with the aggression? Covid isolation got you cranky?

You reading too much into the message not trying to be cranky my apologies if you felt that way. My point is I can name a number of NBA players that are not ultra athletic that are Allstars in the league. Being athletic does not guarantee that you will be an impact player in the NBA.

Completely different discussions. The reason Maxey is projected higher is simply a projection of where they will be in a few years. No question that Quickley is ahead of Maxey right now but not by that much. Maybe a season or two and Maxey will catch up. Maxexy however is a lot more athletic than Quickley and Quickley has no shot of catching up.

As for Whitney that would work if Whitney had any skill level at all. Problem is that he doesn't. Other than a vertical leap test there is nothing that Whitney can offer an NBA team. He probably would get drafted however as someone will take a chance that he can develop, but he's a lot further away than most think. Whitney isn't even close to being where Diallo was at the same point and Diallo was a project as well.

And I like Quickley but he isn't Steph Curry. If he could shoot like that then Quickley would go #1. Maybe someone will believe that he can at least be close to that which is why I believe we should continue to use him as a shooting guard rather than move him to point. Let Quickley fill it up as much as he can. Let the NBA draft him for what he does well instead of highlighting what he needs to work on.

But why are you making that point to me when I didn't indicate that I agreed w/ that type of assessment, just that it is as it is? I agree with your points, and I did prior to you making them to me. Do you disagree scouts traditionally rate the athletic freaks higher than the soundly skilled ball players?

Reasonable question. I assume it’s because Maxey is viewed as PG that can score. IQ is viewed as a SG that might have trouble matching up with larger (6’4” and up) and more athletic SGs. I think this might be viewed as a weak draft class too which pushes some players up to draft positions that they might not be in in better years. I like Maxey but he probably didn’t have the kind of year that Fox, Booker, Wall, etc had at UK yet he might still be a lottery pick.

For selfish reasons of course, I hope scouts tell Quickley he sucks and won't get drafted

IQ will be a bargain for some team like Darius Miller was. If I was a GM I’d try to have at least three or four guys like that on my squad. No drama. No BS. Just solid players that will do what you ask of them and can hit threes and play defense at a good clip.

Quickey is a pure scorer, and a really damn good one. But Maxey has shown better point guard skills, being the primary ballhandler and facilitator. Maxey's ceiling looks like mid-tier starting point guard while Quickley's looks like scorer off the bench.

Maxey is not only a much better, more fluid athlete, his handle is much better.

Some NBA guys call it "wiggle" but you have to have it to be an impact guard in the modern NBA.

A lack of it is why a guy like Alex Poythress, despite being a good shooter and physical specimen, couldn't make a real mark.

They can both play in the NBA, Maxey is more athletic but Quickly is the better shooter. You don't have to be a great athlete to play in the league, Quickly drew more and ones than anybody on the team this year, most of them driving to the basket. Quickly has a knack for knowing how to draw fouls and plays more under control, both are winners.

Maxey will be a pg in the nba imo. Maybe some as a combo but if we didn’t have hagans to make happy maxey would have run the show from day 1 BRandon knight style

Y'all that are comparing IQ to Steph Curry need to note that Steph played 4 years in college. He sold his abilities to the NBA in college, but it took him 4 years to do it.
Yeah, he's 6'3", but so are a gazillion other kids that dedicated their lives to making an NBA roster, but never did. Their size was too much to overcome. Just because Steph did it, doesn't mean IQ can.

Some of you guys have me questioning my old eyes and basketball knowledge and I've been watching the CATS since the 70's.

Quickley was ranked as the No. 6 point guard in his class. Played point in USA basketball. He's had to primarily play off the ball as a Cat because he played behind Hagans but when he does run the offense he seems to do so very well. There doesn't seem to be much of a drop off.

Maxey on the other hand is absolutely painful to watch run point. He seems to have no court vision at all, passing ability is painfully bad and he is not a willing passer either. His ball handling to me looks extremely bad too. I realize that he is projected as a PG in the NBA and as our highest projected draft pick Cal had to make him the primary backup PG but I cringed every time Hagans got a rest and I worried that the Florida game might have cost him a draft position or two because it was so painful to watch. I can't remember a worse performance in extended minutes as a PG under Cal at UK and I'm including the few times that Jarrod Polson because of injuries and foul trouble had to run the point for extended minutes.

Maxey has an advantage in athleticism and a slight advantage getting all the way to the rim but overall I think Quickley is twice the PG that he is. I just hope Quickley comes back to run point next season to remind the NBA that he is indeed a PG ... and a good one.
