He was the best coach we've ever had. But 17 the Jackie Sherrill that ruined our football program from 2001-2003. As always, the man is an enigma. He's the best thing that ever happened to MSU football and he's the worst thing that ever happened to MSU football.

And sutterkane, the team didn't quit when Jackie announced his retirement. They'd quit long before then, thanks to Jackie.

JWS returned our program to the depths that he inherited

This is so true. JWS DID NOT destroy our program, he just returned it to us in the same shape it has always been. I never enjoyed MSU football as much as I did then and probably never will. Thanks for the memories, Jackie !!

My vote goes to Croom being the worst thing that ever happened to State. His consistent losses to crappy high school teams year after year have made me feel worse about MSU football then anytime between 2001 - 2003. I remember the 80's as well when we weren't too great either, but Jackie made us expect more and Croom has lost to some very very crappy teams that he had no business losing to even with a roster full of one legged babies. I have never been more embarrassed as a state fan than over the past 5 years.

That's inconsistency at its best. You bemoan Stansbury for not making it past the opening weekend of the NCAA Tourney, but praise Jackie who had a terrible bowl record. Praising Jackie is about like praising Polk only worse. Both stayed too long and tarnished their legacy, but at least Polk only had one terrible season. Jackie buried this program and was too stubborn to admit he couldn't fix it.

To the coment that he brought us back down to where we were before him, I take offense to that. We were surely much better off before he arrived than when he left. That 2003 team was terrible. He left us a handful of decent players, and the rest were lazy, untalented wastes of scholarship money.

I hate we took the downturn thanks to the NCAA and a bad batch of jucos, but that moment in the Georgia Dome was worth it for me. The day he was hired, Dp looked at me and said, "2 things are going to happen- we will compete for the SEC title, and we will go on probation."...to which I replied, "if we compete for the SEC title, I dont care if we go on probation"...

"To the coment that he brought us back down to where we were before him, I take offense to that."

Why? When Jackie got the job, we had had 1 winning season in the last 9 seasons....how are we not back to where we were before? Don't give me any ******** about scores being worse, teams score alot more now that the wishbone and T are history and the passing game is prevalent...

but Sherrill endeared himself to many students and fans at the LSU basketball game when he showed up with donuts for all the people that had camped out to see us win that final SEC game. I still think to this day that that was one of the coolest things I was a part of at MSU. You can say what you want about how the last few years went down but when he first got there and did stuff like that everyone loved him.

Croom inherited a team that quit on the field, he had to change the mind set of the players, and try to recruit a different style of player. I really don't think he has improved any of the athleticism nor the talent of this team. Last years team was a culmination of Players playing together for a while. That being said there is no reason this team is 1-4. This being the measuring stick this year, Croom has regressed in my book.
Really **********? No ****

since the sanctions and the overall state of the program when he left certainly hindered our hiring procedure. We end up with Croom, the program is in bad shape, and we've had one winning season since. Croom doesn't get a pass in year 5, but you still can't sit there and say you don't care that Jackie put us on probation and then spend so much time and energy complaining about the current state of affairs. Can you not see that Jackie got us into this mess? Croom hasn't lifted us out and that is on him, but the hole was dug with Jackie as coach.

Is there any instance where this makes a difference? It still was an abysmal program when he left. Two things to consider whenever contemplating the JWS enigma: Dontae Walker and the Troy State/Tornado homecoming game.
