Personally i liked Towles running 8-10 designed runs per game under Neal Brown. Think Neal knew Towles couldnt just sit and read in the pocket, but Dawson protected Towles by running more/making questionable calls. Dawson just used Towles the wrong way for what the team needed him to be.

UK was the first time that he actually called plays at the FBS level. I think by deduction, we can assume that he was talking about his time at UK.
His system is pretty terrible all around though. "Go long" should never be the primary focus of the offense, yet in his system, it is.

He was the offensive coordinator for three years at WVU. Even if he wasn't objectively in control, obviously he subjectively believes he was... After all, we're talking about what Dawson subjectively meant, here. Dumb, dumb thing to say regardless, but hard for me to believe he was taking a shot at Towles given how close the two were/are.

Maybe he was being "sarcastic".

It was definitely a dumb thing to say but not completely sure it was necessarily a shot at Towles/UK.
Not a big Dawson fan but this is right I think. He likes to spout cute laid back responses and I think he was trying to say they're putting too much emphasis on his impact down there and he doesn't have as much impact as the QB either way. Can't give him too much credit either way. He just didn't think how else it could be taken. Just like his mentor Mr. Mumme who did this all the time out of distain for formality.

The guy knows football but needs to work on the discipline of the game to be a good coach down the line. Drilling and building discipline in HOW you play each play are as important as the play calling. We lacked the former badly last year. . . and the play calling was weird at times too.

Does anyone know what the first tweet Towles sent out was? He deleted the first tweet and then posted the one quoted earlier in this thread.

A lot of coaches say things like this, including our own John Calapari who said I'm a better coach now that I have better players. He just means better quarterbacks make him look smarter. It's self deprecating nonsense. I didn't agree with a lot of his playcalling and that "you don't understand football" line was a clear case of someone who was losing ground during the season but for people to be offended by the line is silly. Patrick Towels was not a good QB and Drew Barker last year wasn't one either. Our 3rd stringer transferred to Montana. Towles currently battling it out for starting QB at BC.

Really think about that for a minute.

His remark is stupidly funny because he isn't just an offensive coordinator. He's the QB coach! If QB play is bad and you're the QB coach, who's fault is that?

One of the most half-assed answers I've ever heard. Should be expected from a guy who admittedly had no idea how to implement the use of tight ends into our offense because "they're so difficult to get in mismatch situations".
He had an All-Freshman SEC tight end, and had no idea how to use him. Kid was a mismatch because of his versatility the moment he walked onto the field.
It would have been a better quote if he had a better QB.

There's not a coach in America who is not a better looking coach with talented players than when they have players less talented. I think those sentiments would be echoed by our own coaches from top to bottom.

Dawson wasn't Towles problem, having three OCs in 4 years, off-season quarterback coach, and attending a qb guru camp was the issue. He never got a complete training under one guy to teach him the right way to do things. It's a shame. Kid could have been great.

The coaches who recruited them. I don't know anything about Dawson, but just reading it I didn't see it as a slap at UK or Towles/Barker. Just that his offense performed better with the better qbs he has, which is true. Every position coach teaches technique a little different, and everyone of them feels their way is the best way, so not surprising about the qb footwork, if the positions were reversed you might see the same quotes. But in the end I didn't see it as a slap at anyone, just a general statement.

Wasn't Dawson basically the QB coach for us last year? If the QBs weren't good isn't he partly responsible for that?

It probably was a subtle shot at us, and that's upsetting if so.

However, I agree with his sentiment. It is mostly about the Jimmys and Joes, not the Xs and Os.

To be fair. Patrick was inconsistent and Drew was just plain bad

Drew didn't play enough to be bad.. You are a moron.

Was not impressed with Dawson's very short tenure here. Very questionable play calling. Seemed completely unable to adjust to defensive adjustments and would call the same sequence of plays series after series even when the sequence had failed multiple times in a row. Could not deal with a physical mismatch and was unable to game plan around one (see Noah Spence, for one obvious example). Always seemed to call the high risk/low percentage play when unnecessary.

The mark of a good coach/executive/leader is they take responsibility for failure. Saying that it's the QB who makes him look good or bad really calls into question his coaching ability (if we've got a stud at QB why do we need to have you on staff at all?) and his leadership. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. Gran/Hinshaw are a huge upgrade over this clown.
But could he manage the clock at the end of the half or game?

When compared to his sophomore year, Towles completion percentage went down, total passing yards went down, and interceptions went up. He was a former 4 star elite 11 QB that many analysts saw great potential in entering his junior year.

I agree with you that he probably said it generally and didn't mean to directly implicate Towles. But as the QB coach and offensive coordinator, if he'd like to point to their play as what makes him a good coach, I'd point him to a mirror and remind him who has the greatest influence on his QBs success. His quote doesn't speak well to his ability to take ownership of his responsibilities. And I suspect that is one of the reasons Stoops gave him the boot. Regardless, he's history. Go cats!

Imagine that, good players make good coaches. Who woulda thunk it?

So true. While it's true Saban is a great coach and does bring all the elite talent to Bama, his coaching sure looks better when Bama is as loaded as they have been the last few years than when not. Every coach in the country would agree with bringing in better recruits makes your coaching look better. Our own basketball coach basically says the same thing every off-season. I can't say i'm too upset to see this guy go, but i will be watching what he does elsewhere and see how well his coaching looks next season.

Kind of seemed to me that was the problem. Dawson really liked towels almost as friends instead of player/coach. And he didn't even try to develop anything with other players especially receivers. And I think that's why they all rejoiced when he left. They were blamed for much of what happened while towels was given a free pass.

And no one will argue towels was better under Dawson. Brown did well with what towels was and he found his strength. Dawson tried to make towels and the offense fit his scheme rather than adapting his scheme to his personnel.

And typically if you make adjustments to your offense based upon the strengths and weaknesses of your personell your a good coach and if you don't then you're not!!!!

I know. I would have preferred to stack the LOS and run vertical, but Hindsight is 20-20.

It was 1v1 on the outside. Dawson liked the matchup, and tried to take advantage. Even though I think we should have ran the ball there, It's easy to say how dumb it was after the fact

No, it's easy to say how dumb it is BEFORE the fact. That's why you don't go deep on 4th and a foot. The percentages are against you.

that's like saying "Hey, it's 3-0 on that hitter, let's throw a fastball right down main street. Yeah, he's a dead fastball hitter, and our pitcher has no movement on his fastball and can barely crack 88MPH, but if it works, we'll look like geniuses!"

It's a bad play because it's a low percentage play when getting a foot is a high percentage play with a big payoff.

He had to have been a cancer in the locker room.
This... CMS mistook arrogance for confidence. Hope he avoids that mistake in the future. Most importantly, I hope we send Dawson's arrogant carcass back to Hattiesburg knowing his season has nowhere to go but up.

I think we would have seen a different Towels had our receivers caught more of his passes. He seems to be the kind of kid that thrives on success, but when balls are dropped, he completely lost his cool/confidence.

Southern Miss' good QB will be an excellent test for our rebuilding D. I would think we would single up their wideouts outside quite frequently with our outstanding corners, to free up extra bodies in the box to rush & bring pressure. probably lots of nickle heat on 3rd & long. the coaches have been bragging on Ware & Allen on the outside rushing the QB, well they had better show it is real in game 1.

They would have caught more if they weren't thrown 3 feet behind them.

The USM quarterback was sacked 26 times last year. 15 of those came in the Miss. State, Nebraska, WKU, and Washington games. They lost both their LT and their RT from a year ago. I could be wrong, but I don't know that they have too many, if any, guys returning that played tackle last year. They have a lot of freshmen on their roster and they have a lot of guys who are redshirt JUCOs. So, there is a lot of inexperience there that USM will have to deal with on the edges.

So, how will Dawson help that cause? Will he keep guys in to block? If so, that means that UK can key on the outside guys and Dawson will struggle to have Mullens get the deep ball off. If he wants to be successful he's going to have to run some screens and short stuff and keep in a back or a couple tight ends to keep pressure off the QB. If UK gets them into 3rd down then they could struggle.

Coaches can only instruct a player as what to do. They player still has to execute.
I don't know you from Adam but pretty sure that Nick Saban (or select whoever you think is the greatest coach ever) could coach you or 99.99% of the people on this forum and you would still pretty much suck at the D1 level.

I'm not a former 4 star QB with pro arm strength coming off 1 year of starting experience in the SEC.

It still comes back to him being the QB coach for me. Can you imagine Stoops making a similar comment regarding the DBs or Gran making a similar comment regarding the RBs? I can't. Good coaches typically shoulder the blame, especially for the individual position group they're in charge of.

“Typically, if I have a good quarterback, I’m a pretty good coach. And typically, if I don’t, I’m not a very good coach.”

WTH?

Sounds like an honest guy. Not even using coach-speak.
