Let me say first I have no dog in this fight, nor do I ever read a Scout or Rivals site.

But the thread from yesterday arguing about stars and "re-evaluations" made me wonder who is the evaluator?

Yancy, Steve, and their counterparts from other scout sites? If so, I'd have as much confidence in their ability to do the pre flight check of the Space shuttle right before launch as I would them having one idea of what the hell they are looking at on film or the field..

Any coach who took their "evaluations" at face value is soon to be one fired *** coach.

maybe even alot because MS kids get overlooked. And these kids that Ole Miss is signing out of state get overlooked as well. The top tier guys will get their dues (Bumphis, Cox, etc.) but by and large alot of the guys who come to schools like MSU and UM probably weren't thoroughly reviewed and rated. So ratings will vary. Guys like Scott Kennedy don't care if some diamond in the rough is a 3* or a 2*, but it helps your team rankings.

Now,it needs to be reiterated that if these guys were top tier they'd be getting the offers, stars, etc. The fact that they are not, shows you that they will need to be developed. But that's the handthe MSUs'/UM'sof the worldhave been dealt.</p>

All I'm asking is who the evaluators are.

I figure they are evaluated by offers. If so I could set up a web site and rank players that way.

This is so funny people giving a **** what some guy is ranked by the offers he has.

Can the guy play? Can he get in school? Does he rock the ganja all day? Has he got 10 baby mamas? Has he got a rap sheet? Did Mama say "he a good boy but just can't read?"

Who cares, Texas, Bama , LSU and Florida have all offered.......... 5 Stars.

this whole deal stemmed from the guys claiming that Ole Miss's players were getting bumps in ratings. Some guys, especially Genespagers, do care about it. I realize that you don't.

When Pat Patterson jumped from a 3* to a 5* based basically on nothing except interest in Ole Miss, that's when I quit trusting Scout. And we see now what kind of rating he should have had. That's the issue here.

way before the internet. I have no clue, although I'm curious. Wonder if you have to be a certified "evaluator" or something, in order to run a pay site like that, much like you need an engineering license, real estate license, etc.

Seems like many of them are just sportswriters who are eat up with the games. Never understoodwhy radio shows/TV trusted guys like Barnhart and the like who probably knownothing about playing sports they cover. They are just writers.

You seem to be operating under the assumption that schools like MSU and Ole Miss can't get good players out of state. I may be stretching that, but you seem to think that any top level talent we can sign has to come from Mississippi because we can't find good players out of state very often.

by and large, the MAJORITY of the time, you can't. You can't fill your classes with them. Can't do it, unless you're Alabama, Notre Dame, USC, LSU, etc., or have some sort of anomaly, like family traditions. Orgeron got a few for you, but he was a fantastic recruiter, and even then he didn't get the cream of the crop.

You have to speak in general terms and not so much in individual instances. You know that. Of course you can get a hotshot out of stater sometimes. But it isn't the norm.

If that's the case, then we're destined both to suck forever, because Mississippi doesn't produce nearly enough talent to support a really good BCS program, much less two, in my opinion.

We'll find out soon enough though whether that's the case. We have 26 players remaining on our roster that originally signed with our 2009 signing class (not counting Barksdale and Tim Simon, with his injury). Of those 26, 23 of them played high school ball in other states. The ones that did play in Mississippi were Emmanuel McCray, Andrew Ritter, and Terrell Grant. So, that's almost an entire class of players from somewhere other than Mississippi. It's looking like we'll only have 5 players from high schools in Mississippi enroll this fall as well. So in two classes, we'll have roughly 8 players from Mississippi added to our roster out of about 45 or so players added total. If your theory is correct, we're really going to blow big time in about 2 years.

I think you're wrong, especially when you start talking about recruiting Florida. I think you can do better recruiting the leftovers of Florida than you can do recruiting the cream of the crop in Mississippi, but that's another story.

Meanwhile, Mullen is testing the opposite side of that test case. He signed 17 players in 2010 and 19 in 2009 that played their high school ball in Mississippi. I don't know how many of those qualified or are on your current roster, but that's a good majority of your last two classes comprised of players who come from Mississippi. He tends to follow your 'we can't sign quality out of staters' theory. Should be interesting to watch develop.

Cotton wasn't that high of a commodity.

Shackleford's a good player, but he's in this region and wasn't the hotshot.

You beat Auburn for Enrique Davis, and apparently he's not any good anyway.

Tim Simon didn't get the instate offers he was looking for, but he's a really good player and a good kid. Trust me on this guy, I know more than you do.

Fixed it for you. That's been the case for MSU, but not at Ole Miss.

In basketball, when Evans started making NCAA appearances, Joezon Darby was our only in-state player receiving playing time. Our Sweet Sixteen team had the Provine kids and a little more of a Mississippi flavor than previous ones. Kennedy's teams haven't been our most successful, but he's gone almost exclusively out of state, and taken us to the bubble a bunch, which is only really surpassed in our history by Evans and the early Barnes era.

In football, most of our best teams have been about 60% out of state in the modern era. Our 2008 and 2009 versions both were more than 50% out of state too, closer to 60% each.

We've gone out of state a good bit and had success doing it. You haven't. I think that's probably the ultimate reason why we have a difference of opinion on this. Your history tells you that you need to stay in state to have success. Ours says we need to go out of state a good bit, and that formula may still apply at each school.
