You beat me to it. I met the son of the Smokejumper’s Foreman (Walt Rumsey) - one of only 2 that survived as he set a backfire and crawled into the ashes as the fire leapt him) at a hostel in Clifden, Ireland in 1997. We were sitting in the common room and were discussing books we read. I mentioned it and he mentioned his father. Crazy coincidence
Rumsey wasn’t the foreman, he was just 21 at the time of the Mann Gulch Fire. The foreman was Wag Dodge. It’s a sad story. Dodge was one of the three (of 16) who survived, physically okay but mentally a wreck. After the fire his dog needed to sleep outside and would cry all night.

Redford directed “A River Runs Through It,” one of my favorite films. You won’t find a film more beautiful than this one.
It’s not just the beautiful Montana settings. Maclean wrote beautiful prose and Redford used a lot of it in the movie.

“Eventually, all things merge into one and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time.”

Yes and the line, “I’m haunted by these waters” was the line that really encapsulated the whole movie.

Thank you - it’s been awhile (both reading the book and recollecting the conversation) and we were many drinks deep that night - Clifden is a great small town to visit. Near some of Ireland’s most beautiful areas.

On the same trip, I took an archeological tour of the area near Dingle. The tour guide mentioned that a week before he led a group containing the man “ who walked on the moon first”. I was like “Neil ******* Armstrong was on this tour!” Imagine meeting up with your tour group and you say - “hi, my name is Joe Blow, what’s your name?” - “I’m Neil”. Looks familiar and you ask him what he does - “I was a pilot and such”. I mean - he had the ultimate trump card

Sneakers.....I loved that movie, but it totally skipped my mind, so thanks for posting it. Awesome cast! Looking forward to a TCM tribute to Redford and hope I get to watch Sneakers again.

Regarding women loving Redford. My mom loved Redford and Newman. She was never the type to express something like that, but with those two she did. But I bet she wouldn't be able to name one movie either of them starred in

I love 3 days of the condor. Schell dunnaway and Redford were fantastic

it's underrated, IMHO. A great book, and then a great movie. I've watched the movie quite a few times, and still enjoy it. Redford gives a great performance, Dunaway is perfect in her role, Cliff Robertson is totally believable, and Max von Sydow plays his role like that was his real-life occupation.
