I live near ground zero in NC and there are tons of national guardsman, Chinook and other military helicopters, and other federal workers here and they have been here for days. The conspiracies can stop. Storms don't give a darn if you are red or blue or purple. Plenty of both are dead from this.
Yes, I had a Blackhawk chopper combing through our tight-run, river valley at my house a few hours ago and the maneuvers he was doing for them to scan the river were pretty impressive to say the least.
Looks like the WHC is history for football this year with the devastation to Mitchell, Mtn. Heritage and Avery and Madison.
And Owen. This storm definitely hit the WHC hard. I’m not sure how it shakes out for WNC period besides SMC because Haywood County schools are out all next week and Buncombe is closed indefinitely so that will be at least two straight weeks that are missed when others have played around the state and Pisgah obviously can’t host anything for the year.
I don’t see any way of proceeding with the season in the WHC. A lot of homes are still cut off from civilization and it could be several weeks before power is restored. I was told 6 to 9 weeks for my address. The devastation up here is unbelievable.
Yeah still no power at my house in Avery Co. I drove to Spear yesterday to deliver some hot meals at the Spear Store from my church in Roan Mtn. Man 19E that fallows the Toe River I was like wow!!!!! I was basically a rough one lane road. I can’t imagine what the roads in the hollars look like.

Hard to imagine. It looks like some 3rd world country.
I really think the season will not be over. Playing football would help the community, take people minds off this terrible storm .
So sad my heart is with you guys at Mitchel we compete with each other and talk football but I wouldn't see you guys going through this for nothing breaks my heart
Unfortunately football is and has to be the last thing on people's minds. This is the worst disaster this state has ever faced. While it can help communities if they can play, I just can't see it happening.
I agree with everything you have said. The only one worse for North Carolina may have been Hazel in 1957. I wasn’t born for six more years but my daddy used to talk about it. Very few were prepared for it. The parallels are similar to what occurred with Helene.
And that was 57 when we didn't have the prep and technology we do now.

Yeah it looks like this is going to be the team that could of been for Heritage, this might have been the most athletic team they’ve ever had sucks for the kids but you can’t plan for a natural disaster, hopefully Mitchell will be really good in a year or two cause I don’t think Heritage will have a team this good for good while.
Going to be interesting just to see how the playoff format will be. Want be as many teams in it. I really feel for the ones that are affected from this devastation.

Can some of those kids even get to school? Man that is horrible. I know football is last thing on their minds. But it stinks for them.
Many can't. My guess is several schools will be without power for some time. I'd be surprised if you don't see several kids finish the school year off the mountain somewhere.
I’m high on a mountain overlooking a long holler (kid that’s a valley for you flatlanders) and my usual sounds of peace and quiet have been replaced by the hum of generators.

That quarterback from mountain heritage. He should roll on over to watauga. They get even more unstoppable.
McDowell is a lot closer and needs all the help we could get. Seriously though this devastation is almost like living in a dream. Some of these places will never be the same, at least not in our lifetimes. I do feel for the kids who can't even finish out their senior seasons. Especially Mountain Heritage.
There will be places that houses will never be again in our lifetimes and in other places more people will be living in campers in many of those places far longer than people will imagine. Some the rest of their lives and they’ll count themselves blessed to have lived. Several are still in campers from the Haywood County flood in 2021.
I know this is an older post but we are still living it up here in the mountains. Hurricane Helene is by far the worst to ever hit NC. Hazel caused 19 deaths and 974 million(adjusted) in damage. In NC Helene has caused 103 deaths and 53 billion. Both of these numbers will rise too. It's still blows my mind to see the damage every day going to work in Asheville. It's become kind of normal but it will never be normal. The fact that teams like Erwin and Heritage are even playing football still is pretty darn cool.
When I was at AC Reynolds last Friday, I went to concession to get hot chocolate, which I thought would be a big seller, and was told no coffee or hot chocolate. I was like, wow sure missed out on big sellers. I was reminded that they had no usable water.

After Helene came through and cause the damage that it did I was very surprised that some of the mountains schools was even able to continue their sports. But yes it’s amazing to know that Erwin and Heritage is still in it playing football. Even some of the Asheville schools had good year in soccer as well.
It really is a miracle we are getting to play. Erwin had a lot of damage in the French Broad river area and Heritage was devastated county wide. It's funny though that schools in the far west like Murphy and Robbinsville were barely touched at all. I would guess there are kids on heritage that lost homes and even loved ones. There is a lot to be thankful about today!
