Just like the whole "let's not let grocery stores sell wine" issue up here. There is NO good reason not to let beer be sold regardless of alcohol content, just like there's no good reason NOT to let grocers sell vino. This coming from a reformed Southern Baptist conservativedrinker. Let them drink stronger beer!!!!!

The big boys (Coors, Miller, Busch, etc) love this state because our beer laws keep out a lot of selection they'd normally have to compete with. I'd bet there is some campaign money on the line or something of that nature.

like the liquor store lobby up here. They promote the ban of wine sales due to the fear of underage drinking. As if they care about underage drinking...
Here's to hoping y'all are able to beat the system!

Because we all know that 16 and 17 year olds prefer to get smashed and party with a good bottle of Pinot Noir. Its really comical the b.s. that gets spouted to "protect" the public.

Rednecks will always drink their cheap watered down beer. I doubt their sales would suffer much.

That's just how things work. Gonna have to grease some pockets... Budweiser is a big contributor to our legislatures to keep things like they are...
Hell we even still have dry counties here in MS.... crazy...

That's good to hear, b/c I was talking to a lobbyist last year about getting the law changed, and he said RYP hadn't hired one...
He also said no way in hell it would come up during an election year, and he was right..

Probably a little of everything. Religious conservatives, lobbyists, campaign money at stake. Who knows what all. But the arguments I keep hearing in opposition of the RYP legislation are pure nonsense.

not commercial brewing, provided you have all the correct federal and state licenses. Homebrewing, while legal in the federal sense, is outlawed in two states - AL and MS.

In Huntsville, wine sales in grocery stores and even places like Wal Mart and Sam's has been around a long time. Up until a few years ago, you couldn't buy it on Sunday ... now you can. Also, up until a few years ago, you had to put it in a brown paper bag before taking it to the checkout counter ... so you looked like a wino heading out of the store. They got rid of that silly rule too.

Publix has an excellent wine selection, as do Sam's Club and Costco, and even Wal Mart's isn't bad. And it's considerably cheaper than the state stores. There are some specialty wine stores that sell the really, really good stuff ... at a price.

And I don't think anyone can say any of the changes has promoted underage drinking.

I really wish they would pass a law similar to TN where the higher alcohol content beers are sold in liquor stores. The beer selection in Southaven is ****. When I want the good stuff I have to drive 20-30 minutesinto TN, spend my tax money there, and bootleg back across the state line.

Hattiesburg's incorporated area in Lamar County has beer, wine and liquor sales. Otherwise, one of the fastest growing counties in the state is dry as a bone.

will raise the alcohol % in ALL beer. That hasn't been made clear enough. It may not help but it still needs to be done. Bubba and Billy Bob aren't gonna pay $8+ for high alcohol craft beer, they will buy what they always have.

Hopefully it will make it to a floor debate so we can get some gold like this from Alabama:

due to the fact that the two counties in Alabama as well as the surounding counties are all dry. Many people from western Alabama drive to Lee county and stock up for the month. It's crazy that in 2012 that most counties in NE Miss. are still dry. I wish RYP the best of luck!

I'd still rather the stronger beer be sold in grocery stores, but it's better than nothing at all.

The beer has to come through the distributors, not the ABC warehouse through the state. Can you imagine the additional expense to house and deliver higher ABV beer for the MS.
