I was trolling Youtube for Mississippi State basketball videos and came across a video of the ending of our 2001 NIT quarterfinal game against Tulsa, which of course we lost at the buzzer. Anyway, I was shocked to hear Jim Ellis doing play by play for ESPN2 with Jimmy Dykes as the analyst. Does anyone know why Jim was doing play by play for ESPN2? Did the original announcer get sick at the last minute or have travel problems and Jim filled in or was ESPN just cheap and didn't want to send one of their national announcers to Starkville? Don't know if any of you will know, but thought I'd give it a shot.

ESPN was short on announcers due to broadcasting NIT games around the country. But that's just a guess.
