While I don't agree with all the Mirando bashing, it did get me to thinking about the corps and what we have there and what we've learned about each of them. Mullen's goal is to get the best players on the field and to me it seems 3 of our top WR just play the slot so got me to thinking about how I'd rank them. Here's what I came up with (exlcuding TE as well):

1) Chris Smith - take away the horrible GA drop and this guys seemsto get more open than anybody and I've seen him fight for the ball and make tough catches even when covered.

2) Brandon Heavens - maybe I have him way to high, but I see him generally get some seperation, rarely drop a ball and he seems to be a really effective blocker. But I have to assume there is some reason he's not higher.

3) Chad Bumphis - while not a bust, he's not the electric player we all hoped he would be. Quick and changing direction, but seems to lack a great first step which is what kills him. He can get the defender off balance, but then has trouble running away from him. Generally had good hands and gets open, I still don't think we've used him enough this year.

4) Jameon Lewis - has the acceleration Bump lacks, but routes nor hands are as good and doesn't block as well. But he's our potential big play guy and I think he needs to find a way to get 4-5 touches a game on offense.

5) Arceto Clark - best hands on the team and also solid blocker. A solid WR in all aspects

6) Michael Carr - we heard about his talent, but is raw and his work ethic may need to be questioned. Showed up to camp late and out of shape and thus way way behind last year. Runs the sloppiest routes of those that I've been able to get enough cameras shots to see them in and out of cuts and doesn't go up and fight the ball the way he should. Hopefully the light will come on.

7) Ricco Sanders - see so little of him it's hard to say what we have in him

8) Sam Williams - gives us everything he has and has caught everything we throw his way. I have to assume separation is an issue against better teams and that's why we don't see him more involved.

Guys we don't know about yet:

- Robert Johnson - big body I hope develops into a nice possession guy
- Macolm Johnson - gets rave review for practice for going up and catching everything thrown his way but we give him no PT for some reaso. maybe we should call him a TE

I'm leaving the freshmen off for now.

They are all similar. Carr is the fastest and should be our deep play guy.Heavensshould play in the slot and Chris Smith should be our possession receiver IMO. </p>

I don't really get the whole X, Y, Z thing so I'll dumb it down:

OUTSIDE 1:Bumphis, Carr
OUTSIDE 2: Smith, Clark
SLOT: Heavens, Lewis

I'd mainly play those 6

and balls shot at him at 100 mph until he crys for his momma. That is all I got to say about the Ga. game.

1. Ladarius Perkins: Has better hands than any of the receivers and follows his blockers better than others on the quick outside passes.

2. Vick Ballard: Has probably the best hands on the team and always seems to get open when we actually run the wheel route play.

3. Arceto Clark: Has the best hands of any of our receivers and seems to do a good job of finding holes in zones and sitting in them. Take away his idiotic play when he was holding the ball out, I guess for a first down even though he had the first down by several yards, and he does well when he gets open.

4. Chris Smith: Makes nice grabs and falls forward at times to get us a first down on third and long, but is just as likely to drop the pass or disappear into coverage.

5. Michael Carr: Gets open on the deep post quite often but is usually overthrown, he is so low because he seems to have no interest in trying to fight for the ball when it is close.

6. Chad Bumphis: Should feel lucky to be this high, he is only here by default because he actually gets reps over the rest of them and I have not seen enough of them to make judgement on them. Has more pass break-ups than Charles Mitchell, and all he does is run and stand on the sideline when Relf is running for his life looking to make something happen. Probably the biggest bust on this team to me after coming here when Florida was a legitimate option for him. He should be happy because he would never see the field for them. I don't know if it is a coaching issue or what but his play is a huge disappointment.

ETA: formatting issues fixed.

Also as an aside, does anyone else notice the insanely high amount of passes our receivers drop during warm-ups? I don't know about any of you, but when I played and someone dropped a pass in practice, they had to run, or do pushups and then run the play again, repeating until they caught the ball. There is absolutely no excuse for dropping a floating pass in warm-ups with no one covering you and getting hit in the hands. The fact that it occurred as much as it did is pathetic.

I'm not saying that they have given up on the season, far from it. In order for us to get better as the year goes on, we have to give the younger guys a chance to play, and we seemed to have finally decided to do that.

Virges, Jones and Preston Smith (still can't believe we burned his redshirt) all received a good bit of playing time on the DL, and Jamerson Love and Slay got their first meaningful snaps at corner. Favre also got a shot to get in the game. I think a lot of it has to do with our lack of depth, but I think the coaches are going to play the young guys in the hope that we can go 6-6 and get to a bowl while simultaneously preparing the young guys for next year.

We seem to have realized that things weren't working, and it is time to give some other guys a shot. We rotated a ton of guys at Broomfield's CB spot and along the DL. On offense, we lined up in the pistol for the first time since Mullen has been here (I think), and we gave it to Lewis on a direct snap. We seemed to be really desperate on offense against Georgia in the second half. I saw Malcolm Johnson in the game more than he usually is as well. Hell, they might as well go ahead and give Robert Johnson a shot now. Our WRs can't get any worse, and he is at least big enough to get off of press coverage.

*Edited to add that I messed up and posted this in this thread. It was supposed to be its own topic.

it was one drop. One play didnt make or break that game. They dropped about three pick sixes in the first half and that game should have been about 35-3 at the half. hate to say it but they were 40 points better than us.
