Palermo's

DEan,

Palermos was really good. I went to gately park for the Benet Mount carmel game a few years ago because a friend said it was good and he was right.

I had some veal and the rest of the group had pizza. But fthe service and food was great. So good I went back for rhe Brother Rice SF game this year.

Us North-siders don't have the same delicious pizza as our southside cousins.

Uncle Lou Malnati's
Pequods
Aurelio's (thank god I married a Homewood girl)
Moretti's

I really consider myself a pizza aficionado. I have had different ones ranging from S to N side and Lansing to Schaumburg. Thin crust I liked Damiami's in Dolton (would go there mid 90s) way better then Vito and Nicks. I think they moved to Indiana. Pequods is great. I had tried Burts (I think he owns Pequods)before but not enough cheese or sauce for me. Lou's obviously really good -the tomatoes. I put Pequods over them though. Art of pizza great as well but it just cannot surpass the Palermo's sauce for me.

Stupid question, do any of the listed joints make NY/Philly style pizza? Crispy on the outside light and airy on the inside...

Capn,

The next question would be who makes a great tomato pie as well. At the end of the day for pizza I'd take Rosie's in Lordship or Pepe's in New Haven.

Exactly! Tomato pie. Ate some amazing pie in New Haven way back. Not sure if it was Pepes. 25 years have wiped a few details

Mauries Table deep dish, extra sausage, well done.
This stuff is actually pizza, not lasagna in a pie pan.

Palermo's is solid, but in the SW burbs I prefer Phil's in Oak Lawn.
I am a northsider, but my wife is from Oak Lawn (Richards grad). For years, every time we were at her mothers, she would order Palermo's. Not a bad pizza, but not my favorite. I had a friend ask if I had tried Phil's. I brought it up one time at the in-laws & they said they used to order from there but for some reason had stopped. After one bite, I proceeded to lay into them as to why were they making me eat Palermo's, when Phil's had been available the entire time. I am not a southside veteran of the pizza world, but Phil's is by far my favorite.

As for the northside, JB's under the tracks on Morse is king.

Capn and jwar:

There will never be a better pizza than Sally's Apizza in New Haven.
They have a $3.1M deal to sell on the table now. LINK

Closest I can find to it around here are two places on North Ave about 20 feet apart: Piece and Santullo's.
Both phenomenal.

Unfortunately, at this time of year, we should probably be talking about best diets or best vegetable juicers.

Bowie and Ignazio,

Having been born in Stratford I could argue for both depending on my mood, the funniest part about the whole thing is Sally's and Pepe's are cousins. Pepe's now has several parlors around CT including one at the Mohegean Sun Casino. Salerno's is another interesting traditional pie but if you want to try something different Captians Pizza in Bridgeport is your ticket, it's a Greek twist on pizza. The Bacon/Sausage/Peperroni pie is a heart attack in a box but boy is it tasty.

JC if you're reading this and since you will be in Philly now if you venture up to Reading try GNA in West Reading or if you're up to by a $10 yearly membership Victor Emanuals II in the 10th ward. Both are pretty good restaurants with decent Italian food and Victor's is very family(see cheap) oriented.

yelp reviews on Satullo's not kind...especially from New Yawkers. They suggest Dimo's. Looking at pics of Dimo's it looks to be spot on for my NY/PHL fix.

Anyone ever eat at Dimo's?

Sounds like I need to hit Piece as well

For "big chain" deep dish, Giordanos.

My favorite family owned is Salernos. Currently in Oak Park. I think used to be in Berwyn? Apparently there's a few split offs from the family elsewhere, but I think Oak Park is the original. Good thicker, thin crust.

Best cheap pizza, Baccis, used to be able to go to the one on Harlem and Ogden with five bucks, and leave with sone change and a full stomach. Not sure if that's still the case.

Definitely a shoutout to Aurielos is worthwhile. Not my number one, but when I have a taste for it, no imitators can satisfy the urge.

Best restaurant to sit and get beers and pizza with friends? Piece Brewery and Pizzeria in Wicker Park.

The BEST deep dish pizza in the state is Papa Del's in Champaign. I've had the others and I know it is south of Chi town, but, with the college town atmosphere and the hole in the wall feel, that only adds to the deliciousness of the Super Stuffed Deep Dish at Papa Del's.

Agree on Salernos. Used to go to the old one in Berwyn as a kid.
