Archie Manning situation trumps all
The greatest fan slap was what the OM faithful did to Archie when Payton went to Tenn. ALWAYS a good thing to bring up when conversation turns to "class" or "redneck" or "flag ship university" or any of the like. It was absolutely a SHAME and DISGRACE how he was treated by his own followers.

Had a friend at work back then who was a huge UM fan and had connections in their athletic dept. Billy Brewer was convinced right up until the day before signing day that Peyton was going to sign with UM. I still remember my friend just shaking his head and muttering, "I can't BELIEVE Archie let him sign with Tennessee. Especially after all the things they said about him." (a Tennessee player was the one who asked Archie Who? and said they were going to beat him like a rented mule).
I think the press conference/hat fake is pathetic and misguided as well. He is somewhat reaping what he has sown. Having said that, only an idiot would say some of the things that were said to Evans.
But if you ask a rebel NOW, they'll tell you that Peyton is actually a fan of Ole Miss and that he has a condo in Oxford.

All a hat fake does is rub salt in the wound to the losing schools. So some sort of backlash is expected. But many cross the line.

it said something to the affect, if you would like to send questions or mail please do so here. It was practically begging fans to send hate mail to Archie.
I was 11 or so at the time and big into collecting autographs. My Dad dared me to send the picture to Peyton and ask if he and Archie would sign it.
Peyton sent it back with his and Archies sigs. Still have it hanging in my room at my parents house.
