I was stuck in Nashville this weekend and didn't get to watch the game on TV either, What was the deal with Ravern and how the hell did he end up with NO POINTS? over 25 minutes

He's a waste of a scholarship!! Wait... or is that Phil Turner? ****, I can't keep up with who should/shouldn't be on scholarship anymore.

saying that he sucks, that, in fact, is the purpose of this question, he's been our leading scorer for about 12 straight games and the top 3pt% shooter in the nation, I'm trying to figure out what went so wrong? since I couldnt see the game

More of a sarcastic jab at the masses that throw the "Wasted scholarship" argument around every time someone misses a jump shot and less of a jab at you... for those of you scoring at home:

1. Barry Stewart - wasted scholarship
2. Riley Benock -wasted scholarship
3. Phil Turner - wasted scholarship ( i can understand the first two...maybe... but Phil Turner?)

I just figured that had to be the answer to your question... seemed like it fit for any other situation.

He played 18 minutes in the first half and missed a few wide open shots. When it was obvious in the second half that it was going to be more of the same, Rick went with other guys, specifically Riley, who knocked down three HUGE threes. One of Ravern's problems is that when the three ball isn't falling, there aren't a lot of reasons to keep him in the game. He's not exactly a lock-down defender and his rebounding is less than stellar.

In the first half, Rick had him guarding the white kid who can light up the three. That kid kept getting open looks from the arc and kept burning us. I remember wondering how in the heck a taller, more athletic Ravern wasn't locking him down. I think Rick must haver had the same thought. Anyway, Rick plays the players who play defense. We put Barry or Turner on that kid in the second half and it was a different story.

His ball handling is suspect as well. As someone pointed out over the weekend, you can overlook bad defense and poor ball handling if a guy is knocking down 50% of the his 3s, but if that same player is 0-for you have to make a change. You have to give Rick all the credit for realizing Ravern was off and for having the foresight to bench the nation's leading 3-point shooter. It was a good coaching decision that paid off. I'm sure a lot of coaches would have continued to let him shoot hoping the would find his shot.

I thought this was why Kodi Augustus was not playing. Not bitching about Ravern, but what am I missing?

He wrote the blog bragging on Ravern being the nations leader in 3pt %. I just hoped it jinxed him for one game and not the rest of the season.

He ruined Wes Carroll's no-int streak last year, and now has struck our best 3-pt shooter. Like I've said before - I enjoy Veazey's work, but if you write the most popular MS State blog on the net, please don't talk about records, streaks, ect. until they're broken or the season's over.

Kodi doesn't play because Kodi doesn't like to practice hard. And in addition to that, he doesn't care for defense.

during the first half, they really made it a point to push ravern around and guard him closely, especially stepping out on screens. they were not going to give him open looks, and the few open shots that he did have were rushed, probably because someone was running at him and put a hand in his face.

ravern is a finesse player. if you push him around and play him tight like arkansas did early, you can knock him off his game. he's not a ball-handler or passer, so when he comes around a screen with the ball, just step out on him and keep him from shooting - he won't beat you passing to the screener. but if you don't step out, he can shoot it as long as he's on the right side of half-court. kentucky found that out, and pelphrey made it a point to push him around. it worked.

he falls in love with the 3 because he's such a good shooter but he's athletic enough that he can get to the hole against most guys who guard him. He just needs to develop that mentality.

he just needs to develop that mentality as well as the ability to dribble a damn basketball without leaving it back where he started or bouncing it off his leg.

He'll also need to develop a handle to do that.
