Monangai looked like himself, love em. Benjamin was meh. Couldn't really break tackles or make people miss. Idk why we featured him so much. Why wasn't Salaam out there more? He is super quick and elusive.

We really miss Brown and Young. Hopefully they're back soon.

Monangai made a great move for TD

BUT...

Northwestern was 1-11 last year.
This year its a team in total turmoil
Rutgers only got 24 pts and 286 total yds on 38 minutes of possesion
A win is a win as they say so its all good but people shouldn't be carried away.
RU shows promise but needs work

Did Salaam even play? Not sure why Benjamin got 20 carries and Salaam nothing, must be injury or the Rocket's doghouse has been renovated.

I also think the right side of our line is suspect with run blocking. We should have had way more rushing yards against this team.

I think Benjamin needs another year in the weight room.

Haven't paid much attention with a ton going on this week (wife's sister's wedding, two bathroom renos going on, and the usual diversions), so maybe I missed it - what's up with Brown and Young? Someone at the stadium said they were questionable but didn't have more details. We really missed them. And was also wondering why Salaam didn't play much (or at all). Huge win, though, even over a team in a bit of disarray.

Brown was dinged and “could have played in a pinch”.. look for him next week.
Salaam injured late in the week and seems the same with Young (?)
Thanks - good to hear nothing that sounds too serious (I hope - we all thought Brown wasn't badly injured last year, lol).

I don’t think the 286 yardage is really a fair assessment. Most of the yards were collected building the lead in the first half and second drive of the second half. We were only stopped a couple times the whole game building to the 24 point lead. Not everyone agrees with the philosophy, but we played not to lose from that point forward and at the end of the second quarter up 17-0.

To me it just seems like usual Schiano ball - playing safe and not to lose even vs a bad team that was sleepwalking. TCU or colorado would have put 24 points on NW in 1st Q.

RU needs to get rid of of the I Luv U garbage and play like competitive men instead of kids holding hands crossing the street and keeping safe. Schiano is becoming an old lady. He had fire before 2010

He was going for it on 4th down in the first half. Completely changed in the second half

We played smart and solid . when you are up 24 -0 in the 4th you burn clock especially the way our D was playing.

Didnt see much vision from either RB but both played hard and M made a couple of great moves.
Agree - god forbid they make a cut instead of running straight ahead into a pile of bodies. Bounce one outside once in a while.

Benjamin is a tough back as is Monangai. Both ran ok and got the yardage when it counted. There will be better days as the O line grows and we hopefully get Aaron Young and Sam Brown back .Waiting for Al Shadee Salaam as well. Monongai had a nice TD sprint off right tackle.

I would think when you're up three scores in the second half and the other team hasn't shown that they can move the ball at all your play calling would become more conservative.
Yeah I don't disagree with you. My response was to ashokan who said he hates how conservative they were. I'm saying they weren't during the first half. The second half they were very conservative though.

Objectively, I’m not sure what else you were hoping to see in this game. We went for it multiple times on 4th down early. Threw the ball early on 1st down. Built a 17 point lead and didn’t punt until the first half was winding down.

In 90 degree heat when your missing multiple offensive playmakers, your offense is a work in progresss to begin with, and you trust your defense to carry the team the rest of the way, there just wasn’t much upside to not playing it conservative.

I’m not saying this means we’re “on our way”. How good we can be is TBD, but the decision to limit pass plays after building a lead was nothing like the conservative play vs. Temple last year. Through the conservatism, when we needed to make a play yesterday to keep the the game out of reached we pulled through - multiple times.

Some fans here expect us to coach like it’s a video game. You have a QB who’s a first time, full-time starter with a better yet developing OL. Do you want to manage the game, clock, and do everything you can not to give it away, or choose a style we’re not capable of and complain about the resulting turnovers, short fields, and losses? Schiano knows the personnel - the pluses and minuses - better than any of us. If he was confident we could open things up while limiting mistakes and turnovers, he would. Right now the gameplan we used is the best one for wins.

Doesn’t diminish how hard he ran and though his numbers weren’t gaudy this kid is a true frosh . He’ll learn especially from Young, Monangai and several others. Can’t teach toughness and the ability to hold onto that pigskin.
Didn't say he wasn't tough. Just think he needs a bit more muscle mass on him. He tended to hit the numbers hard but went down rather easily and I didn't see much wiggle from him. A smaller back needs to show more elusiveness. No doubt he can become a solid RB.

When you see Monangai run he runs through people like a bowling ball and can make you miss in space. Didn't see that from Benjamin yesterday. Doesn't mean it won't happen in the future.

I thought we should have used Monangai 75-25 yesterday instead of 50-50.

He just got here in January…all things being equal Schiano is pleased with his RB room and especially with Brown , Salaam and Young return. Did you ever see Minnesota under Fleck and Ciarroca. This recruit Gurrerier is another 5’8” 195-200 lber who is so much like Ray Rice and Ibrahim. We need to take care of business against Temple. That game is not a gimme.

Wasn't someone repeatedly saying Kyle was the actual leading RB last year and people were being quick to proclaim Brown the clear option at RB?

Oh ya, it was me.

When you are missing 3 pretty good RB’s you don’t bite the hand that feeds you. If we had our full compliment….different thing.

Actually miss your takes whether good or bad. Just need to keep feeding this program with quality players and coaches who actually can coach. Need steady improvement all around. O line for at least yesterday looked better and not undersized.
