Re: Bear and Alabama

Am I the only person to not know that any child of any player that ever played for Bear at Bama can go to school there w/ a 4k per semester or free ride scholly (if the player has passed).

I had never heard that until today. How does that work for a football prospect?

Wow. I never knew that either. Pretty awesome thing for the Bear to do. A football prospect couldn't use it though. He'd be counted towards the 25/85 limits whether he used the football scholarship or the Bryant scholarship.

You gotta hand it to those f**kers, they made a pretty good hire when they hired Paul Bryant. It was a time when college football was an afterthought, and he helped make it huge. In comparison, Saban seems like a *****.

If I'm not mistaken, Bear also went to "bat" for their chancellor/president during a salary dispute. I've heard stories of him at Scout fundraisers. He would make a 30 second appearance and tell everyone to write a check. Money flowed on his every word in the state of Alabama. He not only recruited players, but whole communities.

Bully hiking his leg and the way he reacted was priceless.

As with everything in this conference, there is a "bama exception" ........................................................

The football recruits who qualify for the Bryant Scholarship count against the 25/85, but ONLY if they actually play in a game during their first 2 years of eligibility. If they don't see the field for 2 years, they don't count against the scholly limit. Obviously this exception has limited value in that sense, but it explains why they would pursue a kid like Holcombe vigorously. I expect them to ice him for two years while they decide whether he will be a hybrid LB or a safety (similar to Sunseri) and then fold that scholly back into their 25 two years down the road.

A walkon can be given a scholarship after two years at any school. But I'm not aware of any situation where a walkon can receive any scholarship money. Do you have a source showing that Bama can give this scholarship to a walkon? Or that anyone has ever received this scholarship and also played football? Not saying you're not right, but it sure doesn't sound right.

It's too bad Ron Polk didn't do the same thing

How many legacy baseball players could we have gotten over the years using a Bear Bryant Scholarship type of program?

here ya go, Pat:

For those who don't speak NCAA, that means that since the Bryant Scholarship can only be used by students to pay for their education at Alabama and no other school, it's considered institutional aid.

If a football player has already received a full athletic scholarship, he cannot accept the Bryant Scholarship since it would put him over the financial aid limit for an individual student.

The biggest question many fans have regarding the Bryant Scholarship is whether or not a player attending UA on the Bryant Scholarship counts against Alabama's scholarship limitations. The answer comes down to one factor: was the player recruited by Alabama's coaches?

According to UA, if the player in question is a walk-on football player who was not recruited by UA's coaches, that player will never count against Alabama's scholarship numbers, even if he plays in every game for all four years.

If the player was a recruited walk-on, a student-athlete who was recruited by Alabama's coaches and who receives the Bryant Scholarship, that player does not count against Alabama's scholarship numbers until he sees playing time.

The NCAA makes the determination of whether or not a player should be considered "recruited", and each individual player is judged on a case-by-case basis.\\
