I was out of town for the three day weekend and wanted to chime in.

I am a software engineer and work in an open office situation with another software engineer and a female trainer.

The trainer went to MC, but has a master's from State. She is a huge State fan. Junction every football weekend. Goes to drivable road games. That being said, its just football. When we were playing in the NCAA Tournament, she had no idea nor did she care.

Conversely, the other software engineer is your typical non-sports engineer type. When the girl and I were talking about the Mullen hire he went on a 20 minute spill about how he despised sports, with reasoning being that when we had a Thursday night game he wasn't able to park at Butler hall and he actually wrote a letter to Portera, all of the trustees and the governor about how he was turned away from going to Butler Hall to do classwork. Then it was "of course it didn't do any good."

This guy also has two kids and despises that his wife makes him let them play soccer. "Sports are so stupid." is a regular phrase that is uttered from him.

When I lived in Nashville, I worked with a MTSU grad that was a Tennessee fan, a Trevecca grad that was an annoying Kentucky fan and a Nashville State Community College grad that was even more annoying as an Alabama fan. Her facebook status is now "My son was just accepted to the great University of Alabama. This is my proudest day." I wanted to reply by saying its just like MSU - anyone can get in, its getting out thats tricky. Luckily we never lost to Alabama while I worked there.

I always felt out of place in there, even though I had the same major as all of the weirdos that were either in Butler or playing Dragon games in the Union. My boss has commented that the CEO of our organization has said that I'm not like the others, I'm actually social and can speak English when talking about things. My field is full of douchebags.

....when I finished my Microprocessors class in the summer of 1998, I swore that I would never again set foot in that building, and have not.

I could not sell you water if you were on fire. Can't imagine an engineer-type running a sales department.

and not exactly great on the phone with customers. He's not scared to change things around if they aren't working though.

Take for instance Stallion. He has the mind of an engineer but is in the sales business, and does well. But talking with the guy you would think he could sell ***** to a troop train.

I changed my major from EE to a double major in Accounting and Finance because I couldn't see myself working 45 years with the dorks, dweebs and weirdos in my classes. When Dr. Ball found out I requested a transfer, he had his secretary call me to meet with him in his office. He tried his best to talk me into staying in the department. Told me that I could have been one of the best electrical engineers to come out of MSU. Thanks, but no thanks. I had to go. I graduated and have been in sales ever since.

I only remember having one class in Butler though. Almost all of our classes were in Simrall. Then McCool after I changed my major.

I just don't like the people I work around. I usually make friends with the HR/Training types. There are a couple of sales and marketing guys that I hang out with too. Alas, I don't go to the Mellow Mushroom and drink beer with the guys after work. I go home to my wife.

....the old coot guy that taught the class at that point, Dr. Little, was a CS prof. It was the last or next to last semester that they taught the class based on the 8088 family before moving up to the Intel x86. It was the only EE class I ever took where I sold the book back, so needless to say it was not very useful.

as an engineer who has been through Sales Training (technical sales that is) with Trane Co.using this book as a guideline

http://www.amazon.com/SPI...id=1239709131&sr=8-2

but they also sent all the new hires to Tyler, Tx for 10 weeks for hardcore Sales Training where they dvd'd everything you did and tore you a new one.....example would be sitting in class and the instructor would point at someone, hand them something simple like a pen and say you got ten minutes and then you are getting in front of the class to sell that to the instructor (all while being recorded and everyone watching)

Stallion is right though is selling to your customer wants and needs and the art of asking the right questions

Back in 2000, I could always tell the difference between a Comp. Engineer and Comp Scientist by the damn smell. Maybe the building smelled and the odor got on the kids. Maybe the major had more foreigners than others and that made everybody smell like curry and seaweed. I don't know, but it is funny that others could smell the funk in Butler.
