Reading between the lines (pure conjecture)...Torbush silence is deafening.....

He's old at 58 years old to be starting a new job as a DC....making a lateral move to a job that probably demands less
"get up and go". He wasn't dynamic enough for Mullen. He gives a sense of stability (credibility?) to a black coarch in a BCS job hiring an old white experienced coarch who at one time was an" up and comer" and I don't mean that in a derogatory manner. It doesn't bother me that he's gone...probably his retirement gig. Also note that Mullen issued a statement wishing him "well" but so far...no response from Carl...odd. It would bother me if Hudspeth leaves for ULMO.

Now, I don't think that he did an absolutely horrible job. Our rush defense looked good at times. But, our pass defense looked horrible ALL the time. I know talent had something to do with that -- but it wasn't all of it. On a scale of 1-5, I would probably give him a 2, maybe a 2.25. Unsatisfactory, but not absolutely horrible.

As for Torbush's silence, do leaving coaches usually respond to public "I wish him well" comments from their former boss? Maybe they do and I just have either missed all of those, or just never have given a rats *** enough to remember them. We don't know if Mullen gave a rat's *** that he is gone or not. It's probably not appropriate that we know that --although Mullen was publicly critical of the defensive coaching on more than one occasion.

As for a lateral move, I'm not so sure. I think that Athletic budget is a pretty good measure of the prestige of a program. And KU has a MUCH larger budget than we do, if you can trust publications on the subject. I have always been suspect of the validity of those lists due to private foundation funds and the like.

a guy who was at Carson Newman with Torbush last year. Said that Torbush is one of the laziest bastards ever. So maybe his philosophy didn't mesh well with Mullen's go and get 'em personality. I guarantee you that Torbush is one of the guys on staff that wouldn't appreciate an *** chewing from Mullen very much provided it happened, which I find very likely.

besides his lack of aggressiveness on defense were:

A. He knew that we had a young secondary and that the weakness was our secondary. He should have known that we had a pretty good d-line, and a pretty good linebacking unit. What does he do? He plays a lot of zone, rushes three with a d-line that while it was pretty good wasn't good enough to get away with that and basically wastes a pretty good trio of linebackers and put a LOT of pressure on the weakness of our defense. He should have known that by using the strength of our defense- the line and the LB's and having them apply pressure on the QB and the offense that he would be maximizing the strength of our defense and also helping to cover our weakness.

B. His gameplan against Auburn was totally unacceptable and every bit as incompetent as any offensive gameplan Croom put out there. The difference was Dan jumped his *** instead of Croom protecting his buddy all year. Thank you Dan. Seriously.

C. His coverages were either- 1. Too complex. or 2. Poorly taught. There was a TON of confusion and finger pointing in the secondary. I have heard many people talk about how complex his scheme is. Again, that is tough on a young secondary.

D. I got the impression that he was at MSU to collect a check. I'm tired of guys like Croom, McCorvey, Curley Hallman, and etc. just coming to MSU and thinking- "These people don't care whether we win or lose, I'm just going to try to get as much money as I can and have a good time doing it. They won't fire me because I'm a nice guy who had success at __." We need more coaches like Dan and less retreads.

E. MSU is known for blitzing. The song isn't Bulldog Zone- It's Bulldog BLITZ. And then there's JLD. We may not have a bunch of Ray Lewis's and Brian Urlacher's out there, but we can get a bunch of guys that want to rip the QB's head off and knock them out of the game. It's not that I'm necessarily anti-zone. It's that I'm anti zone 90% of the time.

My guess is that he wants guys that just aren't wired to ever be lazy, regardless of the circumstances.. Hard concept for some peoople to understand. But, some people aren't lazy even in their liesure time.

Just got off the phone with Carl Torbush, in Lawrence, Kan., returning my call.

Torbush said he accepted Turner Gill's offer to be the defensive coordinator at Kansas "late last night." Torbush said all reports that he had accepted the job before going to Kansas to talk with Gill were "jumping the gun."

"Turner and I go back a long ways," Torbush said. "I've always had phenomenal respect for him, what he stands for and what he believes in."

But Torbush said he leaves Mississippi State and Dan Mullen's staff with "extremely mixed emotions."

"I love Mississippi and I love Starkville," Mullen said. "I have no doubt Coach Mullen and his staff will turn State into a consistently winning program. We had a great recruiting year last year. If they finish the way I think they will, they're going to have another great one this year. There are great things in store for Mississippi State football."

Torbush said he spend the next few days in Kansas recruiting "and trying to stay warm," while also trying to get in touch with his Mississippi State defenders he leaves behind.

When you are playing in the secondary, don't let the receiver get (17)ing past you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't tell you how many times we were beat deep. And I agree with you Todd about rushing three. We gave opposing qb's all the the time in the world. Sorry about losing it, but I haven't taken my medication for the day.

he probably doesn't like Mullen too much. I probably wouldn't either after consistently having my *** chewed out for NOT RUSHING THE FREAKING QB!

I do agree we played better against OM, but I think we played well against traditional offenses. The spread/hurry up offenses hurt us. It seemed like Torbush couldn't react or didn't react fast enough. Auburn killed us on the corners. It was a simple alignment for most of the game that hurt us. Watch the replay. The white TE/WR would split out 4 or 5 yards from the tackle on the line of scrimmage. Before the play started KJ was blocked and not to mention that the receiver (#5 I think) was a big athletic physical specimen. They immediately had leverage to the outside leaving only Damien "i wouldn't lay a lick" Anderson to beat.
