Realistically does OBrien stand a chance to push

Tommy next fall. It is very obvious that this staff cannot teach a running game unless they can pass it first.

We have seen other freshmen QBs play well at other schools. Can it happen here?

issues you are benching a three year starter, and a guy the team sees as a leader.

Our oline is still average, POB is not as mobile as Tommy

Does the team fold if you bench their leader?

Does this move force a complete youth movement as the older kids check out on the staff?

is a youth movrment bad?

If he's good enough when he comes in sure...I have no doubt this staff will give him a strong look. My guess is TA experience will be too much to overcome.

Yes he does. I can tell you his foolball IQ is already greater then Tommy's. Love tommy's heart but he is just not the qb we need to run this offense.

IMHO, there is a 66% chance that O'Brien starts day one. Oregon is game 3. We need to get his feet wet a couple games before that. With every Tommy poor performance/loss that percentage goes up.

Tommy is a three year starter and he is still making the same unfathomable mental mistakes that you expect to see in pee wee football

on top of the gawd awful mental mistakes he isn't very accurate

we better hope we have someone who can come in and compete -- we should take POB and a juco

Darlington and Bush should be encouraged to move on if they are so far behind TA that they aren't viable options this year

We need to hope he has the tools and maturity to come in and at least push TA.

Watch this and ask yoused if he mechanically isn't possibly the best looking QB we've had coming her in a loooooong time.

I dont think Riley will want to start him, but he may have to start him.
One thing I noticed is when he's in the shotgun he's not having to jump up to catch the snap like ta does. Can we sign their center also.

He's going to start. There's literally no comparison between the two. POB can thrive in this offense where TA just brings it down.

I believe POB will be given every opportunity to win the job. I also think we should look at a graduate transfer if given the opportunity.

Are you aware of any graduate transfers for next year?

I was just curious who could be a possibility that would fit Riley's system.

The QB play at NU is horrible. I don't care if he is a leader. He is a leader with no QB talent. This is hard to watch. This team has no way to stop teams. No way to put a drive together. 4 and 3 and TA throws a bomb to Reilly. That is a stupid decision. It took a perfect pass to just move the chains. Crazy.....

Yep, 4th and 3 and they throw it long albeit it was caught but the receiver was well covered. This isn't the first time short yardage plays on 3rd down have turned into long bombs. It's hard to know if that was the play called or the primary receiver was covered and he had to find a secondary receiver.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that is a coaches decision. TA locks on who he is going to throw to pre-snap. While there was obviously a deep route, that wasn't the only route on the play. When TA gets pressured or feels like he needs to make a play he generally just chucks it up. How often do you see him check down? We regularly have underneath receivers and backs open, which gives me some hope in terms of the future with the right QB.

when you can't run the ball - our off line doesn't allow for us to run the ball 2/3 of the time

as an offensive coordinator you go to the short passing game to get 3-5 yards and stay on schedule with regards to down and distance ... our QB is incapable of making those reads or making those easy throws

so as an off coordinator you are saddled with personnel that doesn't allow to consistently run the ball, a QB who is terrible in the short passing game, isn't accurate and a poor decision maker

you then have to bank on chunk passing yards .... you have to throw the ball a ton given you have a QB who, for every 10 attempts, isn't even going to complete 5

What I think everyone needs to understand is the fierce level of competition in SoCal from Orange County to San Diego......It's QB heaven..Living in SoCal for years, I've personally seen the amazing QB play throughout the area.

POB has a few things going for him that will make him a serious candidate to play early.

1. He's tall and has good footwork.
2. He's played against some of the top teams in SoCal.
3. He's coming in early and we all now this will enhance his knowledge of the playbook.

He has a shot to play early and if he will push TA.....

The way the season has gone, HCMR can't afford NOT to play him early.....I love TA, but he's not the QB mold you want for this offense.

Serious question. As a casual recruiting visitor for a few decades, I've heard the names of a lot of schools in So Cal, but can't say I'd heard of San Juan Hills before this year. What kind of program has it been? Is it a traditional power? Flash in the pan? Is POB the best player they've had in awhile? Again, just curious.

I think TA will start the 2016 season but if he pulls the crap he pulled yesterday throwing that 6 pick.

POB will get his shot and it will come when TA screws up like yesterday. Riley going to have to at least make a bowl game and show we have a future in his system... I also hope his defense needs to improve greatly as well.

My two cents is we inserted our only D1 scholarship QB with experience to start this year. Which I think is the best QB we have on the roster so far. Maybe POB comes in and is the better D1 scholarship QB, over a RS senior. Hope that makes sense.

Riley will play the best QB we have next year, whoever that may be is a long way from being determined. I'm sure Riley feels the pressure of the fan base to start winning these close games which leads me to believe that he will play the best man for the job, regardless of age

If O'Brien has the smarts, and hits his medium to short passes better then Tommy, theres no way Tommy will beat O'Brien out. Tommy is kinda bad on short and medium passes. We all know this. This is why i think O'Brien at SOME pont will be our starter next year

And question, no one has even mentioned this, cant we play both. Maybe start one or the other, then insert the opposite QB for a few series and go with the hot hand? Would this be an idea. Has workes for some teams with youth. And remember, i believe the OSU had luck with freshman QBs, sure there oline protects there QBs.

You could google the high school's website and maybe they have some history there. I think the high school was built around six years ago so they are just establishing themselves on the Orange County scene.

When you think of major D1 talent in SoCal, you think of the below:

San Diego: La Costa Canyon, Oceanside, Helix, Cathedral, Vista...
Orange County: Mission Viejo, Servite, Mater Dei, Long Beach Poly...

San Juan Hills has not been a power at all, pretty new school in southern Orange County.....

forgot to add, I'm partial towards La Costa Canyon as my daughter graduated from there and now attends UNL....

Those schools in SoCal are like small junior colleges....

IMO, POB is better than TA at this exact moment. Yes, that's right. A high school senior is better than a college junior. He will start day one barring unforeseen circumstances (POB injury, TA magically turns into Marcus Mariota).

TA reads defenses at a junior high level, The fact that he is our best qb is appalling. If he wants to play at Nebraska next year he should move to RB. He even said it himself that he is a running back that throws last season. POB is our Day 1 starter and will start every game next season if healthy. Riley will not start TA over POB with TA's poor skillset.

QB is the most difficult position in sports to project to the next level --- high school to college or college to pro
there are no guarantees

I think you take a JUCO + POB if you can and hope that one develops

If any new QB steps on campus and is only slightly below average when it comes to reading defenses and accuracy and doesn't crap the bed routinely under pressure they have a darn good chance of starting from day 1
