Realistically, how much can we spend on a head coach?

I really have no idea...that's why I ask. But hypothetically speaking, let's say we CAN spend 2.5 million. That's a ton of money but not ridiculous if we really want to prove we aren't the same MSU anymore. I'm going to ignore the buyouts that these guys have, although I know that those figures are incredibly important. I just don't know what they are.

At 2.5 million, that could get us Mangino at Kansas (currently makes 1.5 mil), Hawkins at CU (currently makes 1 mil), Oregon's Mike Belottie (makes 1.45 mil), Oregon State's Mike Riley (Makes 850,000), Jim Harbaugh (makes 550,000).

Why haven't we discussed Harbaugh as a legitimate choice? Did he get an extension this year that I missed?

I think 1.7 to 2 mil would be the max right now. Once you get into that figure you become a player for really any coach that is not in the SEC. As I have stated before if you look around at other conferences from a facility stand point we are on equal footing with everyone. Sure you have some big schools, but I would bet we are in the top tier of all the BCS schools not in the SEC. I would think if we make the commitment to football and come up with 2 mil, then we can go get whoever we want.

For what we pay Croom now, we can get a good coach. I would save the 2.0-2.5 for when/if he can bring home the bacon.

but why can we not give an incentive based contract? Let's say we guarantee 1.3 mil and make another 1.2 mil available with a winning season, bowl game, etc. We shouldn't guarantee 1.7 mil to anyone who is not going to do a good job. I can assure you that we could EASILY pay a coach 2.5 million for winning versus paying 1.7 mil right now for a 3 or 4 win season. It pays for itself in bowl revenue, season ticket sales, etc. We could get the current results for paying less than half a million a year. Remember all the complaints about the 4 mil to Saban. Well, so far he is proving to be worth every penny. However, Saban already had a NC under his belt when he came to Tuscaloosa. We are paying 1.7 mil now to a guy that has really never proven anything other than he can keep an assistant's job in the NFL for umpteen years.

Those are the schools we really compete against anyway. So Crooms real record is 2-1. Damn you LaTech. You kept Croom from going undefeated.

we can pay more than Colorado. Yes, we have a better fan base than Colorado. Yes, we actually have more money than Colorado. Now, no way in hell we get him. They just gave him a contract extension and his son still plays there.

But the fact is that the national perception of Mississippi State football should not be where it is AND we have the resources to change it. No doubt we have one of the top 25-35 coaching jobs in the country.

the history of the SEC. Period. You dont just change that by hiring a coach. Face it, we are and always will be a baseball and basketball school. Our football facility is 11th in the conference only ahead of Vandy. We are one of the poorest fan bases of all SEC schools and have the lowest budget by far. Our athletic budget is over $10M below Ole Miss. We have no history. Its tough to swallow for some but thats the reality of it all. Deal with it and quit dreaming.

State will always stay a loser. We have tens of thousands of fans that think exactly like you. Take that attitude and shove it up your ***.

MSU has the ability to fix things. The problem is that we haven't had the will to do it in the past. Things are different now.

Fuckk you.

their 3 bowl games EVER tell me no. granted we don't have but 4 times as many bowl appearances as them but saying we are the worst team in the history of the SEC is inaccurate. have we traditionally sucked? sure. should we want or dream for more? of course we should. otherwise why be a fan in the first place? wanting better and dreaming for wins is part of the competitive spirit of football or hell any sport for that matter.

i am glad to know that you seem to believe that all teams either started out as winners or losers. there is no ebb or flow to the power of a conference. teams like LSU have and always will be in contention for a national title every single year. the top 25 doesn't even need to change from year to year in your world because you know that on average over the years the same teams will end up in the same slots. <---------- sounds really dumb doesn't it?

will always be last in education. and Jackson will continue to become a more hazardous place to live.

Whatever you do, don't expect more or drive yourself to make situations you're involved in better, just accept the way things are. It's just better that way.

There are ways around it.

Nutt, technically has a 7 year contract.

Going into this year, MSU won 34.5% of their SEC games.

Vandy was a little over 30%.

Kentucky was 33.6% I think.

So there is no doubt Vandy and Kentucky have been worse.

with a non-binding understanding that it will be renewed. But if for some reason y'all were to fire him, he'd never see any money for the last 3 years.

He has a binding clause where he can add 1 year at the end of the first 3 years. It's not a handshake agreement.

to be obligated under the contract. There can be rollover clauses, but those DO NOT extend the contract beyond 4 years. It has to be executed, usually annually, but UM is not obligated to make the extension.

Don't you remember when they attempted to give Tuberville a 10 year deal? Mike Moore nixed it with a solid legal opinion based on the law.

I realize (as I stated) it has to be executed.

I realize Mississippi state law only allows 4 years on government contracts.

but football is about money and we are one of the top 32 paying jobs out there now and will likely move into the top 25 with the next hire b/c the ESPN money will allow us to pass some non-SEC schools.

but your Genespage attitude is great.

is we never had the leadership from the AD and the school to make our program viable. We have hired the wrong coaches for the most part and when we had one that was very successful, we held onto him too long. When we were being investigated by the NCAA we didn't stand up to them at all. The attitude that many fans have like you is because of that.

Hopefully, we now have the leadership, we are doing much better on gameday- in fact despite our horrible team, the gameday experience is the best it has been since I've been a State fan. Now the next step is to get the proper coach which would be someone that can win games and bring some excitement back.
