Bama -1.5

Having said that, I don't think we will win. Quick turnaround and full court pressure spells disaster for this team. Take the tide (hope I'm wrong)
Thoughts?

at all. Bama has lots of talent and a better coach. They play great defense.

Due to family members through marriage being big Bammers & I really want this one... I think even more so than the UK game.

How did Bama rise so quickly with one of those clown mid-major coaches, that Coach34 is so fond of, who never succeed in the mighty SEC? I thought that formula never worked, i.e. Bruce Pearl and Darrin Horn.

It'll be an ugly game. You are going to see two offenses that have very little movement and both will look completely lost at times. Obviously, the difference will be Bama's defense and toughness. This isn't a good match up for us at all.

I say we keep it close for a little while due to Bama's offensive struggles, but they end up winning the game fairly easily.

But you are supposed to bet on favored unranked team vs ranked home team, line might go up some.

It definitely isn't because of their offense. Also, who was the assistant coach on Billy Donovan's 1st national championship team?<div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div>

by the coaches that came from major colleges but 4 out of the 6 from the mid majors were fired too.

Folger took Vandy to a sweet sixteen. I would have gone with Odom on that one. Pelphrey USA -Arkansas fired, Horn WKU- USC soon to be fired. Jeff Lebo Chatanooga- Auburn fired. Cliff Ellis Clemson- Auburn 2 Sweet Sixteens. Besides why are you arguing with yourself DS?

the most successful SEC coaches have come from mid-majors

there are some mid-major coaches that didnt fare well, but you cant deny the most recent successes of the SEC outside of Kentucky are mid-major guys.<div>
</div><div>And yeah, add Odom as another HC from a bigger school that failed.</div><div>
</div><div>The ratio for mid-major coaches working out is far better than hiring established coaches from bigger programs</div>

Is that hiring a new coach is usually a crap shoot, no matter where they come from. Some that seem like sure things flop, and vice versa.

"unsuccessful" SEC coaches that came from "big" programs at some point were from mid-majors. They didn't just forget how to coach over time.</p>

this discussion goes back to the Stansbury Sixpack vs the Stansbury Lovers<div>
</div><div>The Stansbury Sixpack and their followers want to replace The Recruiter with a younger mid-major type or asst from a top program that has some fire and will use the youth to his advantage- ala Mullen and Cohen.</div><div>
</div><div>The Stansbury Lovers say if we do indeed have to replace The Recruiter- they want a veteran coach from another big school that has had NCAA Tourney success. They want a guarantee of getting better.</div><div>
</div><div>What I showed was that the coaches that have been successful in the SEC for the last 15-20 years have come to the SEC from mid-majors- and not veteran coaches from bigger programs. The failure rates of the coaches from bigger programs is much higher than the failure rate from mid-majors</div>

What ACC, Big East, Big X, etc coach could we go steal? We would be a perfect school for a coach to leverage for a new deal (remember Sean Miller's 'interest' in Maryland? Yeah right..). I don't think there is any question we would have to turn to a mid major or assistant type guy.

Where a coach is before we hire him will have no real impact on rather he's successful at MSU or not.

SEC schools have hired 24 coaches that were head coaches at other universities. Taking out current coaches that have coached less than four years here are the final numbers. 7 have come from major conferences and 17 from mid-majors. Of the 17, nine took their SEC school to Sweet Sixteens, of the 7 four took their school to the Sweet Sixteen. So final numbers; Mid Major hires have a 52% rate of going to the Sweet Sixteen, Major hires are at 57%.
