A-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Does anyone at that school realize that Colonel Reb was based off a blind black guy named Jim Ivy who served as the University's unofficial mascot until his death?

Gay Ole Miss, and its not helped by the Admiral Ackbar commercial that has been running on ESPN lately!

Oh, and how does any of these possible choices in any way go with a "rebel" And what the hell is a landshark?

Screw it. The mascot should be a white robe paired with a burning cross.....

Man, im glad we settled on a nice Bulldog 70+ years ago.

Why was Col. Reb white if he was based on a black guy?

The only report that suggested that was one university historian who said he believed Col. Reb MIGHT have been based on Blind Jim. In other words, there is nothing factual to support that idea.

The bear is the only one of those mascots that I wouldn't be embarrassed to have as MSU's....

Seriously, the land-shark? Why would you make your school's mascot a fictional creature that was only brought to your fans' attention when your player two(!) years ago started making that ghey symbol on the sidelines?

It's like if MSU were to change our mascot to the 'Dog Pound Rocks' or something. It makes no sense. God, I hope they go for either landshark or hotty & toddy.

as to pick Hotty and Totty can they?

The bear would be great. They'll probably introduce him with the slogan "The Bear is back in the SEC."

Whichever it is, will they actually be known as "Da Bears" or whatever, thus quietly killing Rebels for all time, or will they have a split identity like Auburn?

According to the linked article, "...based on input from all groups within the Ole Miss community,
the committee said it spent a great deal of time over the past few
months discussing, reviewing, tweaking and re-thinking the Hotty Toddy
concept, which has evolved from a pair of characters into one mascot."

I'm pretty sure that sentence has a dangling participle, by the way.

The committee also eliminated the Rebel Stallion concept due to the problematic logistics of having a live horse in the stadium or Grove.

“Though there was great enthusiasm for a live horse to lead the Ole Miss Rebels, we soon realized that the horse would in reality be present for a short time at the beginning of each football game,” the committee stated. “Also, there are limitations concerning the horse functioning among the extreme crowds in the Grove. These facts would require a companion costumed horse mascot to be visible at the games, other sporting events like basketball games where horses are not allowed and at special events

Yeah, cause mounted policemen are always worried about their horse going nuts in crowds. That's why you never see them on Bourbon street, or New York.

Because of that, let's have a @%#$%%% BEAR. They handle crowds a lot better.

But they can have a freakin' Landshark? They say they contacted George Lucas about using Ackbar, did they ever contact Lorne Michaels about the Landshark idea?

But the people that actually bought that story really need to look at themselves in the mirror.

...and this is just a fiasco to make the fanbase feel as though they had a choice.

Similar to the way I believe our "vote for the basketball floor design" was handled.

Sorry, I guess now it's Hotty Toddy, or HottyToddy, or whatever. Still gay.

btw, WTF is a landshark?? According to wiki, it is an old SNL character or a character from Transformers.. I doubt Optimus Prime 4 (OP4) is THAT influential to have his way in the OM athletic dept shortlisting a Transformers character. Then again, he made a whole fanbasebelievethat we tore down our goalposts after our UGA win.

My voting: 1. Hotty-Toddyhermaphrodite; 2. Landshark; 3. Bears

But it doesn't make sense.

If you grew up with the mascot and don't find it offensive and want to keep it, it's natural to want to believe a story that helps your case. If you want to believe something, you can justify a lot.

If it was determined that dog mascots were offensive, and some historian for MSU determined that MSU's mascot may have actually been based on a cat that used to roam the campus, many of your fans would want to buy it, no matter how implausible the story was.

One guy wrote a book and said Col Reb MIGHT have been based off some black guy. And because it the suggestion was printed in a book, people beg to believe it.

The logic used to eliminate the horse should have also eliminated the bear. Which means the bear has been forced into a finalist position on purpose.

Can't be Landshark because that masot is too new, fresh, and fad-ish.

Can't be H & T for obvious reason.

That only leaves the bear.

Bear down!

they were going to eventually go to a new bear mascot in the future, so I believe you're right. He also said he thought they would end up being called the 'bruins' instead of 'bears', but either way... They've been setting this up for a while, and leaving the bear as the only realistic choice is their PR way of doing it.

P.s. I'm still praying hard for the Hotty-Toddies or LandSharts.

Exactly the story I head (3rd hand). This has been in the works for a while. And its been a bear all along.

this isn't the end of the process. It's just a step in the process. Y'all are just copying Madison St. Joseph. They changed from the Rebels to the Bruins years ago.
