AZ - guy initially looking like a home run. We’ll know in 2-3 more seadons.

UNC - looking like a potential flop. Matt Doherty era all over again? Possibly.

Duke - recruiting very good but jury still out, has yet to be the man

Michigan - initially looked like home run, now looks like a .150 shortstop

IU - his grade currently is a B to B+ but let’s let the cake bake. Won’t know for another 2.5 seasons

I'm not so much judging their results yet.If we want HR hire confirmation of 0 HC experience we have a couple...Few Gonzaga Izzo Mich St Dean Smith UNC and Roy KU.

My only thought is the current landscape shows many examples of hires by programs higher up or near the Cards of guys with no college HC experience.

May crunch some numbers to get closer look this week just out of curiosity.

Thanks for the analysis and the examples Hop. This pretty clearly shows that head coach experience has not been valued all that importantly recently at the high major-college level.

And if it is reasonable to "let the cake bake" with regards to the IU hire, why not in regards to UNC? As for Michigan, 6 months ago in only his second season the Howard hire was clearly regarded as a Home Run - multiple college COY awards, a number 1 seed and an Elite 8. Yes, they are in the midst of a disappointing season, but now he's a .150 hitting shortstop?

Tom Izzo had 0 HC experience upon hire and was .500 his first season and went to the NIT his 2nd. It''s tough to analyze guys a year or two into it.

Mark Few had 0 HC experience upon hire and he has built a monster premier program.

My thing is I've just heard ad nauseam the head coaching experience is a big must and all I'm wondering is are fans aware programs are trending a different direction if a top dog just isn't available?

I believe a lot of people have pre-determined views on these things and I'm not saying anyone is crazy. But I do wonder if they are aware of the landscape and how it's evolving.

If you are Mark Few or Jay Wright, why would you go to UNC, UCLA, or the NBA? Guess what, they aren't.

There are going to be counters, Penny @ Memphis, Mullin @ St. John's, Ewing @ GU, Avery Johnson Alabama, Clyde @ Houston, etc, etc, etc. They failed. But so did Chris Mack, so did Billy G, so did Matt Doherty, so did Tom Crean, so did Archie Miller, so did Steve Alford....ya know, guys with a little or even more resume.

Just saying there are many ways to find a good HC, and seeing the landscape this appears to be what UofL might need to do.

If KP were an assistant here, it would make more sense for him to get the job. But, he hasn't been part of the program in a long time. Even worse, he was at a place most of us really, really dislike. Some would say they even felt betrayal. He's got a kid on their roster, his ties run that deep. Also, KP could have cut his teeth at a smaller school, but somehow, a job has alluded him. He wants a big time gig without having put in the work. That's entitlement. Now, I could have all of this all wrong. But, that's how it appears.

You point is valid. It has been proven over and over the right guy can transition from assistant to head coach. It can work the other way too. But to eliminate people due to no head coaching is short sighted.

i like Pegues.

i don't think he will do shady things in closed down Italian restaurants or have strippers at dorm rooms. also, unlikely to have extortion incidents.

I think this is a very good point. Yes, good point X. I will counter AZ brought in dude from Gonzaga so we still see it can come from an outsider. But yes it would make more sense in the way Duke processed it. Agreed.

To be clear I'm not endorsing Kenny or saying no on him either.

I'm just trying to look @ this from a big picture perspective.

If we apply the sort of standard "old guard" way of finding a HC, we may run into a wall and short on candidates that fit our checklist. First guy mentioned that fit that criteria was Pearl, and he literally treated this job like a fart in the wind.

I think bumping into Pitino as an unemployed legend who loves horses and was dying to coach has confused us somewhat on the overall hiring process. Us, meaning all of us.

We'll see what they do.

Did you think that Pitino and Mack were going to be involved in “shady things”? You just can’t know - until after the fact.

If it ends up not being Payne then I can see us possibly getting a name out of left field that maybe none of us have thought of as of now.

Nothing would surprise me at this point.

He favors Payne. It was a good interview./perspectives. He thinks Payne has all the right connections in the recruiting world. Thinks former players he worked with would only help in recruiting.

He talked NIL and the importance of getting the corporate community more involved with players.

Likes Cronin as well.

Didn’t hear it. Did Blue say he thought Payne could coach? We don’t have too many questions about his ability to recruit…

He thought that Payne going to coach in pros was a good move from a pure coaching perspective.

You googled it for 10 minutes? I think less than 30 seconds would have sufficed.

He liked his NBA stint from a recruiting perspective. Loved his individual skill work he has done with players. Apparently he is really well known for his ability to coach individuals.

He wasn’t worried about transitioning to head coach. Learned from some really good coaches.
