Obviously those numbers are probably better than the numbers if you were to do the same for the rest of the QBs signed by D-1 schools, but still that shows just how hard it is to predict future success from one level to the next, especially at the QB position.

That's also why I say it's best if you can sign an average of 1 QB per year that has D-1 potential. You're likely to have the majority of them turn out to be busts, so you need to get all you can to give yourself a shot at one of them turning into something.

I agree. It's little school mentality that leads to the man-love of HS QB's when they should be stockpiled like linemen. In Oklahoma they chew'em up and spit them out, no sweat. In South Carolina, grown men discuss the hair style of Stephen Garcia…who is looking like a nice solid, stinky, smoking, brown….BUST.

Yep, it's difficult to stockpile QBs though when you aren't a big program. That's the problem. QBs know if they aren't the starter they won't get playing time. At every other position, you don't have to be a starter to be a major contributor.

It's a lot tougher for MSU and Ole Miss to stockpile SEC caliber QBs, which is why we often have to settle for guys like Michael Herrick (all 5-11 of him) and the Henigs of the world. For me, I'm all about signing guys with the size and arm strength to be SEC QBs. If we can average signing 1 kid per class that is 6-3 or above and has solid arm strength, then I'll be happy regardless of what the recruiting sites say.

I think we had a coaching staff that grossly misevaluated his talent. They saw a small guy with a cannon and thought that would translate well to the WCO, which is supposedly places value on accuracy over arm strength, but that's a whole nother thread.

Heck, Auburn wouldn't let him walk-on.

Croom's staff consistently gave scholarships to too many long range projects like Tray Rutland and Chris Relf or guys that had D-II talent like Ty Evans. There seemed to be very little emphasis on getting offensive players in general, besides RB's, which I never understood.

But another point I want to make is that I agree with most of what you said, other than the above. While there is a whole lot of talent, there just a whole lot of good QB prospects, and a lot of times the guys that look legit are often times poorly coached or played in a run-oriented offense where they were asked to throw about 10 times a game. I think that is changing in Mississippi with the rise of the spread offenses, and camps like the Manning Passing Academy. We'll see if this year is going to start to become typical or not- 3 QB's in the Dandy Dozen. Until then, if I was the coach at MSU or Ole Miss, I would go to California where they have a ton of good QB's, and not enough spots for them all. Both of us could easily pick up a guy like Josh Riddell practically every year if there aren't any legit QB's in the State, and/or if the good MS QB's get plucked up by Bama, LSU, or Auburn, it would be a good fallback plan to have.

But I think MS QBs are going to be getting better over the next few years with that changing offenses and it wont be so difficult to find a couple of good QBs a year.

It would probably be even easier to get a guy from Texas to.

and Kyle York didn't work out too well.

of guys like McCoy, Stafford, Chase Daniels, Harrell, Snead, etc.

Texas has produced some good QB's in the past here and there, but recently there has been a big influx, probably because of the spread offenses just like Mississippi on much grander scale. Just like here, it could be an anamoly, but I don't think it is in Texas, case.

coming out of Stephenville (where Snead is from) either this year or next. I kind of hope we go after him.

It is one thing to get one each class but they are getting 2 this class and having some on campus. USC and Cal seem to get one every year also. If we could pull off getting Tyler and Cotton in this class, our depth would be pretty good if you don't mind having a true freshman for depth. As is, Tyson Lee is servicable and Relf is still a mystery (he may turn out good in Mullen's offense). What I saw of Relf was horrible.

Is Terrance Davis an option at QB in this offense? Seems he was supposedly more closer to a running QB than the others on our roster.

them into a certain position, but let them play several positions through the program. What you get by the time they reach jr. high ball, is some game savvy kids who are already introduced to the spread, winged T and other wide open brands of offense. The Pop Warner coaches really work the offensive side of the ball hard with these kids, which is why I think my boy's team jumped out of the pack and tied for 1st place in our division. A couple of the coaches (including myself) were old school defensive guys and we pretty much put it to the other teams that were used to running up and down the field by running some stunts and blitzes that most teams weren't ready for. Anyway, going back to the topic at hand, they start grooming QBs and skill players at an early age here and wide open offense is the flavor of the moment. The best example I have seen is Texas commit Garrett Gilbert from Lake Travis. He won back to back 4A State titles and broke Graham Harrell's passing record while still putting up some hefty rushing numbers. You will get to see him in action after McCoy leaves next season and if he plays as well at Texas as he did in high school, the Horns will be tough to beat down the road. ***hit the wrong reply button. This was supposed to be in the Texas QB thread line.

like Harvin (position wise, not as good). They may line him up in the Wildcat formation.

USC and Cal get QB's because of where they are. If you're a QB in California, USC is the place to go right now, so they get the best of the best in California and guys are willing to wait their turn to play there. Heck, they have a guy in the NFL who never started for them and had a great season in Cassell. Their last few QB's have been guys like Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, John David Booty, and now Sanchez. Three of those four are from California. Tedford is a great QB coach at Cal- Berkley.

Georgia recruits well because they are Georgia and they have a pro-style offense and a coach who has gotten some guys to the NFL like Weinke and the Heisman like Ward.

The big problems are untill recently high school offenses in Mississippi were very run based. Compare South Panola to the top programs in Florida and Texas. I remember years ago watching Madison Central play Provine in the State Championship game and not one single pass was thrown. Most Mississippi high schools were based on running or the option game. You still see some schools offense is still the wishbone or wing t. But within the past few years you more spread attacks and pass happy offenses are starting to come around. I also think alot of high schools in the past had coaches that knew it was alot easier to put your best athlete at qb and run the option. Alot easier to teach and learn then trying to teach a spread. Take Austin Davis the qb at southern. Has shown this year he is a very good qb, but nobody hardly knew who he was because he only passed the ball around ten times a game while he played at West Lauderdale. And went to southern to play baseball first.
