Obviously no stats were available for Alcorn. 3 of the teams we play are among the teams returning the fewest starters (bama, memphis, ole miss). Although one of them is bama. We play none of the teams with the top 10 most starters returning, but Georgia and Arkansas are both returning a lot.

You could argue we return 18 starters because Lee was so bad that he shouldn't even be considered as a starter we lost. He didn't contribute to anything except turnovers.

Little off topic, but not really. This past Sunday we were having lunch with our small group after church and the guys ended up talking about football. I had made the comment that I felt decent about this year’s team as we had some depth and that I felt our record should be better this year. This one Ole Miss Alum pipes up that State is going to be lucky to win 3 games this year. I asked him how he figured and his response was "we lost our best offensive player, our best defensive player, and that we had a new QB." He went on to say there is no way that a team could improve losing those type of pieces. I proceeded to ask him how he felt Ole Miss would do this year and he said they should be about the same. I said "that was pretty funny because they lost their best offensive player (Dex), the best defensive player (x2), and they had a new QB coming in and everyone knows there is no way a team can improve losing those type of pieces." Needless to say the conversation quickly turned to recruiting smack.

He thinks we'll be lucky to win 3? We'd have to be very UNlucky to win 3. Croom could coach this team to 3 wins next year.

Did we really lose our best defensive player? I assume he was talking about Chaney, but I don't think many people thought he was our best player on that side of the ball. Not that aren't enough flaws with his idiotic theory anyway, butthe reasons he gives for it arenot even true in the first place.

Also, it's been said before, but that doesn't make it any less true: While normally you can count a QB switch as a negative for the next season, I don't think there is any possible way that our QB playis worse in 2010 than it was in 2009.

I think McPhee was our best defensive player. Chaney was "just" a solid SEC-caliber MLB. McPhee is a total badass.

but i will have to say that if you look at the last ten years, a bet of three wins isn't that tough of a call to make

What a dumb 17!
Isnt possible that we might have the success the Webels had in 2008? Now, I am not saying we are going to win 9 games, but its a pretty similar situation...

In fact, now that I think about it, its eerily similar. Going in to 2008, the Rebels had lost Brent Schafer, BenjurvisGreen&BlueEllis and returned a significantnumber of startson the OL.
Same situation, we lose the Mini-turnover machine (addition by subtraction), Dixon and returnaround 90 starts on the OL. There, I predict the Cotton Bowl for us next year bitches....I said it.

RebelBruiser, please come punch holes into my theory.

In the NFL, the MLB is rarely on the field all 3 downs. Most teams, like the Titans, won't touch a MLB in the draft until round 3 or 4. And other than Willis and Urlacher they aren't paid as much as a DT, DE, or Corner.

You have to have somebody that can call plays, but the most important position or two are the ones where you have badasses. Doesn't seem to matter as much whether it's one of the D-line positions or a linebacker position, you just have to have somebody that causes problems. You can't have a middle linebacker that's slow as **** and misses tackles, but is it really that much more important that any other position? Would you really rather have a badass Mike than a defense end that's a badass?

James Laurinaitis and ReyMaualuga strongly disagree with you. And that was just last year.

but I don't know how this D is gonna be run so its tough to make that call. I would rate our top 5 defenders from last yearas: McPhee, Wright, Chaney, Mitchell, and White. This year you probably same order, but add Banks/Broomfield in there somewhere.

BTW, in the Senior Bowl Chaney was MLB. He was on the field all 3 downs, including nickle and dime formations.

I honestly dont know how it stacks out, but as I recall DE has been the most coveted player lately.

I would besurprised if State didn't make a bowl and Ole Miss did. We are losing most of that 2006 recruiting class and will be relying on a lot of young players and inexperience at QB. I see a few down years at Ole Miss to account for the 2007 and 2008 recruiting classes. We have some talent deficiencies in the defensive backfield and offensive line to deal with this year as well as the loss of McCluster (who we leaned on to win games). State has a good opportunity for success this year.

defensive positions too. You're just trying to stir up **** by posting ridiculous ****. For the record, in the history of the NFL defensive player of the year award, it has been won 14 times by linebackers (middle and outside) and 25 times by linemen and backs. So much for MLB being the most important position on the defense.

Diaz talks about putting his best 11 players on the field. We might use a 4-2-5 with White and Wright as our only 2 LB's. MLB is important, obviously, in some schemes like a 4-3. But I think most GM's would tell you that a lockdown corner, pass rushing DE, or a beast of a DT areGENERALLY more coveted. I thought that was common knowledge in today's game, but apparently not.

But in 2008 GM's thought enough of MLB's Jerod Mayo and Curtis Lofton to draft them in the first and second round. Not really sure where you're going with this, other than that in certain schemes they're less important. Your initial statements that "this ain't the 70's" and "no one drafts them before the 3rd and 4th rounds" are way off base.

Every team in the NFL plays 3 or 4 LB's so obviously some are going to get drafted. You are making my point for me because where would those teams be without James Laurinaitis, ReyMaualuga, Curtis Lofton, or Jerod Mayo? Haha, I don't think many people would consider them the most important players on their defense.

I guess when you are getting killed in an arguement you result to lying because I never said "no one drafts them before the 3rd and 4th rounds" as you quoted. I said most teams like the Titans wouldn't touch a MLB in the first 2 or 3 rounds. By the way, some of the LB's you named play OLB not MLB. I'mout. Have a good weekend.

For much of that time the dominant defense in the NFL was the 3-4. Bottom line is, the award has gone pretty evenly to all positions. It's a stretch to say that any position is inherently more important than another.

Such that if you have a ****** QB, it sort of affects everything on offense? I would argue that the answer is yes. So while other positions are crucial, like LT and RB, the lack of a decent QB has more of an overall impact. And I think on defense the MLB is sort of the QB of the defense. Other players can impact certain plays more, but a ****** MLB will affect a lot of ****.</p>

If you could draft any single player from any team who would you draft?

He said LT(Tomlinson, who was arguably the best NFL player at the time).
I told him he was an idiot. I told him that for me would be Peyton or Ray Lewis.

He also told me that Randy Moss would be out of the league after his last year with the Raiders.
I dont really have a point here. Except that my friend is an idiot.

Carry on...
