Recruiting and the Star Ledger

Switch in tactics, they have gone from hyping the legal issues, alluding to KF's impending termination, to booster comments and now they are going to start on recruiting, by having TH call every committed recruit and ask them about there status given the turmoil around the program it's not bad enough that you have a myriad of college coaches at it, you expect this, but to have a local newspaper disparage the program to committed recruits at a one to one level is a bit much. The SL and the sports beat writers are really low rent and have absolutely no class whatsoever.

you're right.. and TH is going to do exactly that. Leave the recruits alone for a while.

Isnt his job to do exactly that?? He is the writer assigned to recruiting coverage.

Some of you are just completely crazy

The issue, for me at least, lies in the description of the program as being "in turmoil" "in a tailspin" or anything alluding to the fact that the coach may or is likely to be terminated.

That is all their impression, which does not reflect the truth. Saying that "the program is in turmoil" is calculated to make their reports seem like important must read news pieces. Of course, we all know that aside from missing the coach for this short suspension, everything has seemingly gone on business as usual. So how exactly is the program in turmoil? Where is the support or evidence?? They're now taking their negative characterization to our recruits, one at a time.

Some of you are such drama queens you seem to believe their hype.

Sadly the program is in turmoil. Players suspended and a coach looking like a fool by going around the Academic Advisory staff, after being told not to....and than getting caught.

But the real issue here is the OP calling out Hunt for doing his job. Don't you want to know the affects on the remaining kids stance a day after a big decommit? Or should we all stick our heads in the sand and pretend none of this happen and wait until NSD?

Would you rather James Franklin be the first to ask these questions? I'm cool that the person is a Rutgers friendly person.

I expect James Franklin to make the call, I don't expect theoretically RU friendlies to stir the pot. (quite frankly I see nothing RU friendly in very much that the SL writers put online or in the rag, there is an agenda here and it is never positive for the program.

I haven't read the articles, but Todd Hunt has treated Rutgers fairly during all of his prior reporting. Making him part of the SL's vendetta strikes me as a bit of a stretch.
Now if it was Politi contacting the recruits I'd agree 1000% with the OP but TH has been a great writer providing Rutgers fans with some great background on the recruiting trail

I think Penn State almost has a full house. The remaining targets are 4 stars recruits.

Why would James Franklin mention anything besides scoreboard...you know how we couldn't even get in the end zone..remember that....

You know it's interesting. It is almost as if- here me out on this- but recruits look at results on the field?

Get this crazy theory...they saw RU suck in 2013....and bounced....see it again...and bounce again.

Now if only we could get to the root of this.

Like, for example who is in charge now, and who then?

I hope someone can sort this out, but until then, just blame the media, because, you know, we're perfect and they should scream it from the mountains!!!!

The S-L has a history of trying to negative affect Rutgers recruiting. In basketball they did the same thing when we had rumors of a "fab" class. they went to the ABCD camp and peppered the recruits with negatively slanted questions re" Rutgers. And in football they did the same AND put out puff pieces on Penn State and Syracuse while bashing us.. and even using negative headlines with lead stories on signing day.

I think the OP is thinking guilt by association in regards to Hunt. But I've never read anything from him to suggest he's anything less than a professional.

TH has been a constant supporter of RU football.
Always treats the program fairly and reports with facts.
The OP is off base on this.

If they continue down the negative path spinning every headline to make it seem like the sky is falling and the fanbase reaches a level of apathy seen in the Shea and early Shiano years, none of them will have jobs and Manahan may actually have to start working for a living.

However, i question whether SL has that kind of influence (like Citizen Cane).........

JF doesn't really need to stoop to bringing up the scandal. He has enough to sell there. But other schools with less to sell will use it against us. And they don't just come out and go "how about that dumpster fire at Rutgers". They just talk up their schools, "our coaching is stable", "we have had no academic scandals in X years", "we have no player arrests". They will be implicitly bashing Rutgers but not directly. Meanwhile the recruits friends and classmates do the direct bashing.

If Todd Hunt talks to these kids and they publicly restate their commitments, that is good for us.

by asking the question to recruits you are planting seeds of doubt - again, it is not the only problem, but it is another problem - that Flood and/or the next coach will have to overcome. Don't think for a moment the coaching fraternity is unaware of the uphill battle at RU without regard to the field of play - from administration to AD to vindictive local media; this level of complexity makes it an unattractive coaching ground. While people want to remove Flood, we are likely to not attract a "superior" coach even if we offered the average salary of $2-3m - and most in the $2-$3m range will not be better than Flood who has a winning record.

Can someone link to the article in question? I can't find any article from TH that shows him spinning recruits negative questions.
