I know we still have a few more guys who are on the fence but when it is all said and done where will the class of 09 be ranked compared to previous classes

we didnt fill a major need though.

Its hard to judge whether its better than the 02 and 03 classes b/c we are so biased by hindsight.

The DLine is one of the best parts of this class. A JUCO pass rusher, a HS pass rusher and a HS tackle.

I think the signing of a paa qb and a talented wr core is something to make this class one of the best in a long time...would of loved to have signed a few good ol but what we have is very impressive

IF and I emphasize IF Tyler Russell pans out. Tyler Russell getting the ball in Bumphis, Thames, Conner and others hands is going to be crucial to this class panning out. The defensive line recruits could have a big impact right away and the fact that they will all probably get early playing time only helps them.

Our offensive line was an abomination last year, yet Mullen did NOTHING to address this issue. So what if State has great skill position people coming, if the Qb keeps running for his life and the line play continues to look like one of those Pop Warner games where one team is super good and the other team is super bad and every play looks like a QB pile-on.

Jackie Sherrill had winning seasons here with decent running backs, mediocre receivers, and sorry quarterbacks simply because he had a dominant offensive line. Why is it that Croom, and now Mullen, don't see that?

Mullen needs to use whatever scholarships left to get linemen.

I tend to rate them after they are sophomores, or finish up their careers. 2003 was full of talent that never really materialized.

1997 class was one of, if not the best. JJ Johnson, Randy Thomas, Alvin McKinley, Mario Haggan, Connor Stephens, Rod Gibson, Robert Bean, Shawn Byrdsong, Ashley Cooper, Justin Griffith, Dicenzo Miller, Pig Prather, and the greatest to only play two years, C.J. Sirmones, who is in fact still wide open.

Considering that several of these had chances in the NFL, Griffith, Haggan, McKinley and Thomas have had long careers (8+ years), Bean was in for 3, Cooper in for one, JJ was one or two.

Yeah, the 1997 class was the best in modern history.

As for the 2009 class, more potential than any class in history. Tremendous speed all around, great receivers, a QB that is extremely promising (and the first REAL QB we've recruited since Kevin Fant), several outstanding defensive players - yeah, if they live up to their potential, this will be the best ever. I'll hold off on that until 2012 and get back with you for potential vs. reality.

As much increased interest as Ole Miss has seen among skill players, and even DL with the addition of Drummond, based on our late season success, we've not been able to gain much ground on the OL front.

The really good ones seem like they go more quickly than any other position. Of course, outside of a small percentage of can't miss types, recruiting O-lineman seems to be analogous to recruiting big men in basketball. Too many times those guys have relied on size alone to dominate your 5'10" 220 pound high school defensive linemen, and it's only at combines and all-star games that you can really begin to have a clue as to whether or not they'll pan out, and even then there are all the variables that come into play when you're talking about a 18 yr old's future athletic success.

Andre Smith was like Shaq. It didn't take a great talent evaluator to know he was gonna be a great one. But a guy like Calvin Wilson looked the part, but didn't have the agility, motor, etc., to play up to his size.

I think you, like many others, are basing too much on the Egg Bowl, where the line got devastated. One, Ole Miss's DL was very good, two, they were hot and playing with confidence, three, we had a lame duck coach, four, we weren't motivated in the least for that game, five, Grimes was a bum, six, the Croom Coast Offense blocking schemes sucked and made them think too much.

Remember a couple of things. We have the bodies, we are not hurting for depth and size. Our guys look the part. Let the strength coach work it out. Also remember that Tobias Smith was hurt and was primed to be our starting left guard. Also remember Philip Freeman will be in the mix, when he should have been playing last in another of Croom's dumb decisions. Brignone and Sherrod have NFL talent. Combine that with easier schemes, a REAL line coach in Hevesy, and I think we will see the line GREATLY improve next season.

Not to mention that we did add two solid OL recruits to this class, at least potential wise.

I don't care how good a d-line is, you should never look like we did in the Egg Bowl. And its not like it was the first time they played poorly, just their worst effort.

And to call Sam Watts a solid OL recruit is a stretch.

Depth? Seriously?

Seriously. Sherrod, Smith, Brignone, Jenkins, Melichar, Saulsberry, Freeman, Looney, Merritt, Alford, Lawrence, Jackson, Watts. Add Hardy to that mix or whoever they may move from DL. That's 13-14 bodies. They had horrific coaching and will improve, at least in my opinion. I admit I try to see the best in situations, but I don't see how anyone could say we won't get better.

I really doubt Sam Watts plays this year. We know nothing about Lawrence, Alford, Jackson, Merritt, Hardy or Freeman. Freeman is a juco that had to redshirt and Hardy was a defensive lineman.

Saulsberry and Melichar struggled to put it politely. We think Sherrod, Brigogne and Tobias give us a core and Looney has showed promise playing sparingly. Jenkins is decent I guess. And in reality, all we know about Tobias is that Croom's staff loved him. That's not exactly a great endorsement.

But if we have depth, then everyone does.

DriveTime said that there are not a lot of OL and DL recruits out there. Plus MSU has so many FR and SO that they don't have a lot of schol to offer on the OL and DL...

Quick Question
Locke just reported that Hamilton committed pushing to 24 with Joe Stewart has STATE high on his list. My question is does this mean 24 schol have been committed. How many did STATE Offer? Can you just point me to link where this is generally already discussed.
Signing Day is Feb 4th, but is that the last day or when does it end?

Templeton Hardy was moved to OL this year, if only for a short while. And the only reason Saulsberry and Melichar played was because of the gun incident. The injury/player casualty line is thin at MSU, you know this, if we have some defection then players who aren't ready have to play. Melichar should have been in a backup role for another season before he had to step up.

And I didn't say we had SEC champion quality depth. But I named off a 3 deep of linemen, surely we can find a starting line and a few subs that can at least compete for us, especially with better coaching and a scheme that's not completely stupid.

but we still have no reason to think they can help us compete in the SEC. I never said anything about SEC champ depth.

And you didn't name off a 3 deep line. You just named off 3 lines worth of names. Everyone has a lot of o-linemen on their roster.

...last year, primarily due to 1) Bad coaching, resulting in lousy development, 2) Marginal Conditioning and Strength Training, and 3) Lack of talent in upper classmen. I agree the new strength and conditioning coach and Hevesy, the new OL coach, will both make a difference. There is potential returning, but it must be developed and that doesn't take overnight. Freeman wasn't strong enough to play RT last year, but is getting stronger. Melichar lost a lot of weight last year when he was sick, so his return may have mixed results. He may be in the 2 deep this year, but maybe not. The coaching staff likes the potential of T. Smith, A. Lawrence, and D. Merritt. Hardy also could be very good, but is lobbying to return to defense. They want Saulsberry at 300 pounds and playing RG by fall. He played RT last year at about 280. Both Jackson and Watts need "hardening and development." We know what we have in Brignone and Sherrod, but both will be appreciably better with Malis and Hevesy driving them. Jenkins could also be a major positive surprise. D.J. Looney is tough, but short, maybe less than 6-0. John Paul Alford has two bad knees and may take another year to be 100%, if ever. My hope is that by the time the season starts we have 8 who can compete in the SEC. 3 Tackles, 3 guards, and 2 centers. I won't say we will be "greatly improved," but we will be better.

It gets me when everybody bitches about how bad the OL was last year, but refuse to do a 10 minute research that proves how damn young & inexperinced our OL was in 2008.

MSU's OL will be better in 2009 because:

1) 12 of them will not be freshmen/rs-freshmen or sophmores.

2) They'll finally have a coach worth a crap.

3) The Spread Offense blocking schemes for OL are only slightly more complicated than back yard touch football blocking schemes for OL.

So I wish everybody would look at the facts & settle down on all the OL bashing.

You keep bringing up things that I've already addressed in earlier posts.

And, Mullen has shown that he isn't scared to jump into JUCO for what he considers immediate needs. I have to believe he's studied this team and thinks he can win with the linemen he has now. I mean, we haven't even made an effort to get anyone outside of Aubrey Phillips, who probably won't help us or anybody else next season.

Do you have any explanation outside of that? Other than saying Mullen doesn't know what he's doing.

he let it be known very early that he would not be considering any other shools; I'm assuming that resulted in no other offers...

wasn't he a GA all star?

b/c they are hard to find and any decent ones were long gone by the time Mullen landed in Starkville. OL and QB are the hardest positions to fill late in the game.

I don't really know what I brought up that you addressed in earlier posts.

but offers, stars and accolades and I don't see much of anything in that regard --maybe he made an all star team of some sort, but I haven't seen it. And Im not buying that people laid off b/c he committed. Fletcher Cox and Josh Boyd committed long ago solidly and schools are still all over them.

He could turn out to be great, but I can only judge him as a recruit. Is there really an objective observer that would consider Watts a solid OL recruit?

Here we go with the "better S&C program" crap again. I seem to remember our fan base singing Pollard's praises after we appeared to finish teams off in the fourth quarter of games in 2007. I'm convinced that we could hire a S&C coach who implemented a program of eating Dooey's and playing XBox and stories would immediately get out about how the players were "working harder than ever before," "hurt in places they didn't know existed," and "it would take 5 of the old coach's workouts to amount to one of the new coach's."

Cox and Boyd = bonafide studs. Everyone wants them, good chance they will be great players.

Watts = good size with a mean streak and motor (from the recruitniks). A few accolades, like All-State GA team. A project no doubt, but definitely could develop into a contributor. I think he did get offers from smaller D1 schools, but like the earlier poster stated, shut down his recruitment early. Did he have a potential offer from Georgia? Eh, no. But probably the UAB, Southern, Troy types. Either way, he has some talent and a chance to be okay.

As well you should. However, that wasn't the point. We don't have any clue whether 9 months in Balis' program will make the OL measurably better than they were last year. Is Balis that much better than Pollard? Who knows. Was the problem last year simply talent and not the OL coach or S&C program? We don't know yet. Even if Balis is the best in the business, it won't make a difference if the guys we line up against are simply bigger, faster, stronger and better. We hear the same **** every time we get a new strength coach so excuse me if I chose to wait until I see some results before making bold predictions.

Word on that, if I hear one more time how this strength coach is far better than anyone we've had, I might lmfao. There's not much you can do different, it's not rocket surgery
