Dude is done and should be. How can you be so stupid in 2020? I’d be fired if I dropped that line at work, and I don’t have a headset on broadcasting it to millions.

He’s white. I guess considered privileged. Can’t make a mistake or an error. Apologies aren’t acceptable. Will have to lose his career over it to satisfy the holier than thou crowd. Those that never made or make a mistake. Social justice at its best.

Are you saying he's only being punished because he's white? We all know that word is hurtful to gay people. This guy was on air broadcasting to who knows how many people, he knows the risk of having a mic to his mouth that anything he says could be live. If I said what he said at my job in a company meeting I'd be gone.

Can't make a mistake or an error? Dude. come on. It's like, really easy to not say racial or homophobic slurs. He didn't mistake a batter's name with someone else, he didn't make a wrong call, he used a harmful slur on air towards a group of people that couldn't even get married 6 years ago. And you want to make it about this made up crusade against white people, gtfo here.

If there is the POTENTIAL for a microphone in the room, you watch your mouth. Period. I know I'm not the only attorney a little alarmed to discover that "off the record" during a deposition is still being recorded, or that courtroom microphones pick up a helluva lot more than you think they would.

Sucks to blow up a career, but he did a dumb thing.

????

I have been a Cubs fan for more than 40 years (I know) and I have never heard him compliment the Cubs. I know his dad was always talking bad about Cubs fans.

He loves the Cubbies. It is subtle but he even made a comment this year in series....something about their clubhouse and how excited it was (insinuating Reds weren't). It is always subtle but I have noticed it for years. Papa B hated the Cubs. Neither mince words which is a why both have rubbed people the wrong way.

FWIW- I don't hate the Cubs...I just always felt like Thom was googoo gaga over them

It is easy to make a mistake too. Cal did it, Kevin Hart did it, Obama did it, Biden did it, Trump did it (some say), Roseanne did it, etc. People (the masses) pick and choose who they want to take out...period. This is also often dictated by the social climate at the time of remark.

Celebrities are also egotistical maniacs (often) and think they can say and do whatever they want. But not all are vilified or completely removed from pop culture.

Joy Reid kept her job. There must be some reason but damned if I know.

This isn't a "mistake". Her didn't say the score was 3-0 when it was 4-0. This is an a-hole using a slur on the radio. It's like the #1 responsibly of a radio announcer. More important than saying the count or telling the batting average of Joey Votto. Don't be a hateful scumbag to 5% of the country.

I worked for an NFL team for seven years. I can't tell you how many times I heard gay references and slurs coming out of the mouths of the black players.

Yes, it was an awful thing to say. If you sucker punch someone or run over their dog or hurt someone in their family, an apology doesn't cut it. If you say a word almost all of us used as recently as the 90s ACCIDENTALLY over the air, an apology should suffice. He knows he screwed up. He's not saying "screw you, I said what I said". He's legitimately embarrassed.

This country has become pathetic.

We've become a nation of beta cucks, so what do you expect. Growing up, we used that word all of the time (it was nothing more than an insult, like the word "cuck"); it doesn't make us homophobes or bad people. People have said it to me; I have said it to them. Do I use it now? No, using today's "standards" to judge the actions of people in past years (Rupp, LSU fans with Laettner, etc) is stupid. If I was unemployable for using the word "***" when I was in High School, then my entire generation would be out of work. Furthermore, I have heard (and been on the receiving end of) slurs coming from these so-called "oppressed" people groups, even as recently as a couple of months ago (I'm a minority, but not part of a "protected group").

That said, he was an idiot, knowing that saying that word could cost him his position. I don't think he should lose a 36 year career, but should he be punished? Yes, he should.

The comment was really bad, but pretty tough to hate on an apology, when a dude f*cks up that bad, and the entire nation is watching while he's realizing he just flushed 36 year career down the toilet. Assuming he didn't have time to meet with PR and rehearse a careful scripted heartfelt apology. He was likely shitting his pants.
Oh totally agree, that's why it's probably best to just go off air and leave the apology to a cooler head and after you've spoken to your PR department.

I was just about to say "Archie Bunker said it in primetime more than once." One time he said if the country didn't start to change, he would move to England "*** country or no." And it was funny. I bet even gay people thought it was funny. I bet even English people thought it was funny. What happened to us?

Mercy and grace were replaced with vengeful, pitiless animosity pimping itself as a new morality. That’s what’s happened.

A mistake used to be a learning experience and a chance to become a better human. Now it’s the kindling used to burn you at the stake.

I thought the worst part of the whole thing was the on air apology. He mostly apologized to his co-workers, bosses, and "people who sign his paychecks." Oof, how tone deaf can you be? He stepped in it, and then the apology showed he was more worried about his job than anything else. That's not an apology from the heart.

It's shark week mfers.

Kept hearing this then I watched it. If you aren’t satisfied with that apology then I don’t know what to tell you. I thought he went too far groveling altho I’m sure the mob was already circling.

The thing about Blazing Saddles was that if you watch it, the white rednecks are the ones that look stupid.

The stupidity of using that word is way worse than the offensiveness. How on earth could you let that word come out of your mouth, when you’re surrounded by microphones and cameras?

In Game 2, from the second inning on, you knew it was coming. Literally 30-45 seconds of silence at a time.

Never in 10,000 years would I ever defend Thom B., but the ***** community should let it go.

The worst part are the "straight" people offended and freaking out over it.

It’s a shame that one mistake can ruin a guys life. The whole cancel culture is a ******* joke. Boycotts, doxing, etc are a stain on our society. This is the exact reason I have zero social media accounts. Not worth the risk.

It's why I don't feel bad for the protesters/rioters who get identified, then rounded up by Barr. And no I'm not talking about people marching and chanting. I'm talking the idiot who throws bricks through windows.

I don't really give a damn one way or another, although I thought his home run call in the middle of that forced apology was hilarious, but I wonder how many people saying this is b.s. and to just let him apologize and move on would feel if actually said something that offended them... like if he was caught on air saying "Jesus Christ can suck my ____" or "The Bible is a bunch of lies and I have literally wiped my *** with it." [laughing] I bet most of the same people wouldn't want him doing Reds games anymore.

Not a good comparison. A good comparison would be "Charlotte is a Bible banger haven anyway" or something like that. A comparison to what you used...I won't even type the words.

Lol, most people I know didn't want him doing Reds games anymore, period, because he's like his dad...just not a talented play-by-play guy. A Tom Leach and others make the Brennamans look like amateurs.

The whole thing is ridiculous.

Does the word bother me? No.
Do I understand why it would bother gays? Yes
Was it intended to be off air and not live? Yes
Does that excuse the stupidity? No
Should he be suspended? Yes
Should he lose his job? No
Does he suck at said job? Well, yes

Anyone else use the word *** every other sentence as a teenager in the 90s? Shewee glad their wasn’t Facebook or twitter or whatever the hell back then.
I still do damn it. If I call you a *** you’re probably one of my closest friends. No homo.
