I couldn't help but think of DoubleD today when hearing about a friend's purchase at Bob Boyte. Not sure I'll be buying over there. Yikes.

Any good car buying stories out there to help me with this boring Tuesday?

It was in the '90s, and I bought a top of the line 4Runner with all the bells and whistles. On a level highway it would shift back and forth from overdrive to drive, and when coasting to a stop it would downshift through the gears just like I was playing with the shift lever. Didn't do it all the time, just intermittently. The dealership and Toyotadenied, shucked and jived for a couple of years. Wouldn't even look under the hood until I proved it was doing it. Finally one of their guys was driving it and it started acting up. Success?? No. They said my engine needed a tuneup, so I would have to pay them to tune it up and then prove it all over again. Took them to BBB arbitration and got a very satisfactory judgement.

had it shipped from Cleveland, Ohio. Got it for $9000 under KBB. They delivered it on one of those trucks you always see and unloaded it in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

I inspected it, signed for it, and had three days to ship it back at my expense. Had it checked out by the Acura dealer and they would have given me $5000 more than I paid for it trade-in. If you look hard enough, and buy from a reputable dealer, you can get a good deal.

Yes, I was scared to death of making that type of purchase on Ebay.

they just refused to honor it. Apparently if you don't have every single oil change receipt they can do that, even though nowhere does it say you have to keep them. I bought the car less than a year old, and they sold me the extended warranty, yet even insisted on the receipts from the first owner, which they did not give me. That was pretty awesome of them. I'll never buy another Nissan again, which is a shame, because I loved my first one. Hell, I like this one except for the whole spending 10k on a car under warranty thing.

I've been around the car business a long time and I've never heard of such, especially on that new of a car.

However, I do know if they (the service department)find out one bit of negligence on your part, they will try to screw you hard, which it sounds like they did. That sucks bad.

I drive a Nissan Titan and love it. Only had 1 problem with it in almost 4 years. It was a faulty battery cell. Best truck I've ever owned.

that if I didn't have my oil changed by them at the dealership and something happened to my engine, then the warranty would not cover it. I just thought it was stupid as hell, and that they obviously was just wanting to get people scared to get an oil change elsewhere. Never got my oil changed there though because I figured they were full of ****, but I guess not. Luckily, I haven't had any trouble with my engine.....yet.

on a car they sold me, yet asked for receipts prior to when they sold me the car? That's ********. That's not how you treat customers, so I'll never ever buy from them again.

You can get it done anywhere you want to, or you can do it yourself. But, as OP4 found out, you'd better save all the documentation to prove that the work was done. Personally, I just always take my car to the dealer. It's a little more expensive (not as much as you might think though), but it's very convenient for me, and I know that all the maintenance records will be in one place if I ever need them.

I can't imagine buying something not under one of those 5 brands.

or do you live near the dealer and near your office?

but it's very convenient for me

every time i have opted to go to the dealer to get something simple like an oil change it still takes them forever to get it done.

They give me a cab ride to the office in the morning and then I usually just get a ride from someone in the office in the afternoon. If not, they always give me a cab voucher for the return trip if I need it.

Their cars look nicer than any comparable Chevy product out there.

It's a good thing Ford has at least made some improvements in their lineup, otherwise I'd have zero hope for American-owned car manufacturers.

To the dealer for regular service and to your house for late night emergency battery repair. That's really all I need to know, isn't it?

After a youth of Fords and Mazdas and the horrors that came with, I'll never buy anything other than a Honda, unless I need a pickup.

was a broke as a joke entry level reporter, bought it from my family five years ago and traded it in last month with 190k on it. Only reason I did was that the axles needed replacing, which was 70% of the total BB value. That engine can purr for 100k more if you fixed the axles.

Now I've got a '07 Pilot EXL. Love it.

Volkswagon has good stuff. Hard to work on but really dependable. Their diesel engines have better MPG than any hybrid on the road. Ford is the way to go for a pickup, best value.

You need to let us know exactly WHO screwed you on your service deals. The more you smoke them out, the more they'll be pressured to honor their deal. This internet thingy can be really helpful, and we don't have to gripe and complain about things anymore,.

dealership until the crappy local news picked it up and they had to do something about it. But it was really a corporate decision, I tried to work with their consumer affairs division, everything. +%$! them. I even tried using a lawyer but they didn't care. They knew just the threat of me possibly having to pay their legal fees (which was an actual possibility) was enough to keep me from doing it.
