....I had no idea they basically filmed Phil Harris dying. Looking back, he was obviously in the middle of a stroke the day leading up to when they found him on the floor. I wonder what ethical dilemmas the Discovery Channel has had in airing these last two shows. I'm interested to see what they actually show tonight.

In any case... it's pretty sad.

The season has been fairly dull up until the last two weeks. I believe that the crew(s) had no problem with them filming Phil's demise, since they have also filmed some at-sea rescues of capsized vessels. Some of those clips actually showed bodies floating in the water, so I'm guessing that Discovery has no moral issues with airing Phil's final days.

As an aside, Deadliest Catch, 24, and re-runs of Band of Brothers are about all the series I get to watch at home. So, while I do regret that Phil died (it's a wonder he lived this long, frankly) it is adding some deep drama to the show. Add it to Jake's dad gone missing and he's out in the middle of the ocean, Jonathon 'retiring' from the Bandit and Mike's pending promotion to captain, and it's suddenly turned a boring season into a memorable one.

and I haven't been much of a fan until this weekend. I started watching an episode and got hooked and watched all the way up to the last two episodes before tonights. I am pretty excited about watching it. I didn't know the guy died. I thought he just had a stroke and made it to the hospital and was recovering well. Obviously I am out of the loop since I am late to catching onto the show.

..I felt like they MIGHT have set up a storyline with Jonathan's leaving. It just seemed a little contrived and they kept covering the same ground in their conversations like the producers had them repeat scenes hoping to get it just right.

The whole damn thing is set up, except how much each boat catches. EVERYTHING else is made for TV... Don't fool yourself. All of these shows are set-up for better TV.

inside of a walk in freezer that can make 30 foot waves and cover a 120` boat with 6" of ice. And the guys who work on those boats in those fake conditions are no tougher than you and me. Hell yeah it`s all made up...great observation.

Of course they don't have a wave machine. They don't need one. But they do guide the story lines and they edit it heavily to present the kind of show they want to present. What you see on reality TV isn't necessarily the real story.

I used to work on the boats to help pay for my college. That was 30 years ago and I am sure it is probably safer now. The people and story lines are what is set-up dumb ****. The people on the boats just are not that dramatic. Most knew the boats and fishing like the back of their hands but other than that, not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

to understand. The show is a choreographed look at a fascinating and dangerous occupation. Everyone understands this. Many of us are fascinated by it because we are able to relate to working folks in any enviroment , this one just happens to incorporate the danger and adventure that most of wish we could at least experience one time. It`s not completely "real" but it ain`t pro wrasslin either.

I appreciate your concern and if I ever get confused about what`s real and what`s not I`ll come here to get you guys to straighten me out.
